Chapter 5: The Husband She Buried
I read the sentence three times.
She never left him.
My brain refused to accept it.
Victoria had a first husband.
A secret marriage.
A secret man.
A secret life.
And somehow, after all those years, she had built another one with me.
I left the coffee shop carrying the folder like it was something dangerous.
Because it was.
It wasn’t just paper.
It was proof that the person I trusted most had hidden an entire world from me.
When I returned home, Victoria was waiting.
She knew.
I could tell from her face.
“You met her.””
It wasn’t a question.
I placed the folder on the table.
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved to it.
“What did she tell you?””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were married before?””
Victoria went completely still.
That was the moment.
The moment she realized there was no more hiding.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
She looked away.
“James…”
“When?””
Her voice became quiet.
“After the babies were born.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“You were going to tell me after I spent my whole life believing something that wasn’t true?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
She wiped her face.
“I was scared.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed upstairs.
“Our children are upstairs.””
Her eyes followed mine.
“They’re innocent.””
“Yes.””
“Whatever happened between us…”
She stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“Whatever happened between us?””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to separate yourself from this.””
Victoria sat down.
“I loved you.””
I looked at her.
“Did you?””
Her face collapsed.
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
That was the question I needed answered.
Not the documents.
Not Daniel.
Not even the lies.
Why?
Victoria was silent for a long time.
Then she spoke.
“Because I thought I was losing everything.””
She told me about Daniel.
About their marriage.
About how it ended.
According to her, Daniel had become controlling after their wedding.
He wanted children.
He wanted a perfect family.
When fertility problems appeared, their relationship fell apart.
“He blamed me,” Victoria whispered.
“And you stayed?””
“For a while.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost felt sympathy.
Almost.
But then I remembered Emily.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
“He came back.””
The words chilled me.
“When?””
She looked at me.
“Months before the twins were born.””
I stepped back.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because he wanted to meet them.””
My heart started pounding.
“The babies?””
She nodded.
“He said they were his.””
I looked upstairs.
The nursery suddenly felt like the most terrifying room in the house.
“Did you let him?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I grabbed my jacket.
“Where are you going?””
“To think.””
“You can’t leave.””
I turned.
“Why?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because Daniel isn’t the only problem.””
I stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked terrified.
For the first time, I believed her fear was real.
“He’s dangerous.””
I stared.
“You’re telling me this now?””
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.””
She stepped closer.
“James, listen to me.””
I didn’t move.
“Daniel doesn’t want the children.””
“What does he want?””
Her lips trembled.
“He wants revenge.””
The next morning, I went to the police station.
I gave Detective Harris everything.
The documents.
The photograph.
Rachel’s information.
He listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he leaned back.
“Mr. Cole, there’s something you should know.””
“What?””
“We searched Daniel Hayes.””
My heart stopped.
“And?””
“He disappeared three years ago.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Then how was he contacting Victoria?””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“That’s what concerns us.””
He opened a file.
Inside was a recent photo.
A security camera image.
I picked it up.
And my blood turned cold.
It was Daniel.
Standing outside my house.
Yesterday.
The same day Emily was tied up.
“He was there?””
Detective Harris nodded.
“According to the footage.””
I stared at the picture.
“How long?””
“Forty minutes.””
My hands tightened around the photo.
“What was he doing?””
The detective hesitated.
Then he showed me another image.
May you like
Daniel wasn’t looking at the house.
He was looking at the nursery window.
