Chapter 6: The Truth About My Children
I couldn’t stop staring at the image.
Daniel Hayes.
Standing outside my home.
Looking directly at the room where my children slept.
A stranger.
A ghost from my wife’s past.
A man who was supposedly gone for three years.
But he was real.
And he had been watching my family.
Detective Harris placed the photograph on the table.
“Do you understand why this changes things?””
I nodded slowly.
“Someone knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That the truth was coming out.””
He watched me carefully.
“What are you thinking?””
I looked at the picture.
“I think Daniel didn’t come back because of Victoria.””
The detective leaned forward.
“Then why?””
I swallowed.
“Because of the babies.””
That afternoon, I went home with a police escort.
Victoria was sitting in the living room.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the weight of every lie had finally caught up with her.
“You found him,” she said.
I stopped.
“How did you know?””
She looked at the detective behind me.
Then at me.
“I knew Daniel would come back eventually.””
I stared.
“Tell me everything.””
She covered her face.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
“No more secrets.””
She nodded.
Then she finally told me the truth.
Daniel wasn’t just her ex-husband.
He was the reason she had chosen the fertility clinic.
After their divorce, Daniel disappeared.
But before he left, he made one promise.
He would never let Victoria have a family without him.
“He said if he couldn’t have children with me, nobody would.””
I felt sick.
“So you went to the clinic.””
“Yes.””
“And changed the donor information.””
Victoria nodded.
“Why?””
She started crying.
“Because I thought he was gone forever.””
I looked at her.
“But he wasn’t.””
“No.””
The room was silent.
Then she said something I never expected.
“The babies were never supposed to be yours.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
She continued.
“But they became yours because you were the only father they ever knew.””
I shook my head.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You stole seven years from me.””
“Yes.””
“You let me love children you knew might not be mine.””
Her tears fell.
“Yes.””
I wanted to hate her.
Maybe I did.
But then I looked upstairs.
At the two babies sleeping.
And I knew one thing.
Blood didn’t erase seven months of midnight feedings.
It didn’t erase the first smiles.
The first steps.
The first time they grabbed my finger.
I was their father.
No matter what DNA said.
But I still needed answers.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Victoria looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
The detective’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked directly at me.
“Mr. Cole.””
My stomach dropped.
“What happened?””
The detective ended the call.
“We found Daniel.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
He looked at Victoria.
“Your old storage unit.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
“What?””
Detective Harris continued.
“And there was something else.””
“What?””
He took a breath.
“Evidence that Daniel has been inside your house.””
I felt cold.
“What kind of evidence?””
He looked at me.
“Photos.””
My throat tightened.
“Photos of what?””
“The children.””
The room went silent.
Victoria covered her mouth.
I felt something inside me break.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Daniel hadn’t just returned.
He had been waiting.
Watching.
Planning.
That night, I went upstairs and sat beside my twins’ cribs.
They were sleeping peacefully.
I touched my daughter’s tiny hand.
“I promise,” I whispered.
“No one is taking you away from me.””
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
One photo.
I opened it.
And my blood froze.
It was a picture of me sitting beside the crib.
Taken from inside the nursery.
Taken minutes ago.
Below it was a message.
*“You still think you’re their father?””*
I stood up immediately.
My eyes scanned the room.
The window.
The closet.
The doorway.
Nothing.
Then another message appeared.
*“Ask Victoria what happened the night they were born.””*
I turned slowly.
Because behind me, standing in the nursery doorway, was Victoria.
And she was crying.
“I was hoping you would never find out.””
I stared at her.
“Find out what?””
She looked at the babies.
Then back at me.
“The twins weren’t created the way you think.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria whispered:
“James…”
Her voice broke.
“There were never supposed to be two babies.””
I froze.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“The clinic made a mistake.””
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“What mistake?””
Victoria looked toward the cribs.
Then said the words that changed everything.
“One of our children was never part of the original embryo transfer.””
I stared at her.
Unable to understand.
“Then where did the other baby come from?””
Victoria’s face turned white.
May you like
And before she could answer…
The nursery lights went out.
