Chapter 9: The Name On The Paper

My own name stared back at me.

*Marcus.*

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

The paper shook slightly in my hand.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my mind was refusing to accept what my eyes were telling me.

“What does this mean?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

“Maya was very specific.””

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at the paper like it was something poisonous.

“Claire?””

Her lips parted.

“I don’t know.””

That answer didn’t make sense.

Not anymore.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the secrets.

After years of believing I was the only person trying to protect our family…

Now my name was the one written down.

The doctor continued carefully.

“She said the person on the phone told someone that if the truth came out, Marcus would lose everything.””

My chest tightened.

“What truth?””

The doctor glanced at Maya.

“She didn’t know.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting on the hospital bed, swinging her feet slowly.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“Maya,” I said gently.

She looked at me.

“Sweetheart, what did you hear?””

Her eyes moved to Claire.

Then back to me.

“I don’t want Mommy to get in trouble.””

That sentence hurt.

Because even after everything, she was still protecting Claire.

I sat beside her.

“Your job is not to protect adults.””

She looked down.

“But Mommy was scared.””

“I know.””

“She said if you knew, you’d hate her.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I had heard those words before.

From Claire.

From Lily.

From the pattern that had infected everyone.

Fear.

Control.

Silence.

I looked at Claire.

“Who was on the phone?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Her face tightened.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“No, I don’t.””

She sat down.

“I thought it was over.””

“What was over?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“The blackmail.””

The room went silent.

The doctor quietly stepped outside, giving us privacy.

“Blackmail?””

Claire nodded.

“After Lily disappeared, someone started contacting me.””

“Who?””

“I never knew.””

I stared at her.

“You’re telling me someone threatened you for years?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

She cried.

“I was ashamed.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You were afraid.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And you chose fear over your family.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt because it was true.

But then something else happened.

Maya spoke.

“Daddy.””

I turned.

She held her backpack.

The same purple backpack that started everything.

“I forgot something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She opened the zipper.

Slowly.

Inside was another envelope.

My name wasn’t written on it.

This time, there were only two words.

*For Marcus.*

Claire stood immediately.

“Where did you get that?””

Maya looked scared.

“I found it after we went back home.””

My stomach tightened.

“You opened it?””

She shook her head.

“I was scared.””

I took the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Not Maya’s.

Not Claire’s.

Not Rachel’s.

I read.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then Claire finally failed to keep the truth buried.

My jaw tightened.

You think you know the story. You think Claire was the person who caused all of this.

A pause.

She wasn’t the beginning.

I continued.

She was only the person who carried it.

I looked up.

Claire was crying.

The letter continued.

Six years ago, I gave Claire a choice. Tell Marcus everything, or lose your family.

My hands tightened.

She chose silence.

Then the next line made my blood run cold.

But she was not the person who called Maya.

I stopped.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“What?””

I handed her the letter.

She read.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She kept reading.

Then whispered:

“No, that’s impossible.””

I took the letter back.

The final paragraph was short.

The person who contacted your daughter was someone you trusted.

My eyes moved to the signature.

There was no name.

Only initials.

*R.B.*

I looked at Claire.

“Who is R.B.?””

She stared at the letters.

Then slowly sat down.

“Richard Bennett.””

My blood froze.

“My father?””

Claire nodded.

I laughed once.

A hollow sound.

“My father has been dead for ten years.””

Claire looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then how?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was only one possibility.

The person who had been controlling the story wasn’t my father.

It was someone using his name.

Someone who knew our family.

Someone close enough to know every weakness.

The door opened.

Rachel entered.

Her face was pale.

“Marcus.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She held up her phone.

“I found something.””

“What?””

She looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“The number that contacted Maya.””

My heart stopped.

“Who does it belong to?””

Rachel swallowed.

“It belongs to someone who worked with your father.””

I stood.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Your uncle.””

The room went silent.

My uncle.

The man who held me at my father’s funeral.

The man who helped my mother after his death.

The man who told me family was everything.

The man I trusted.

A message appeared on my phone.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You finally found the last door.*

Then another.

*Come alone if you want the truth about your father.*

I looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

“Marcus…”

I stared at the message.

Because suddenly I understood.

The locked room was never the end.

It was a distraction.

Someone wanted us looking at Claire.

Looking at Evelyn.

Looking anywhere except the person who had been hiding behind my own family name.

I grabbed my jacket.

Claire stood.

“Where are you going?””

May you like

I looked at her.

“To find out who my family really is.””
