Chapter 6: The Man From The Past
The footsteps above us were slow.
Calm.
Like whoever was walking had no reason to be afraid.
That scared me more than anything.
A person who knows they are guilty usually runs.
A person who believes they are untouchable walks slowly.
Claire stood completely still.
“Who is Daniel?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her eyes stayed on the stairs.
“Lily’s father.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.
He looked older than the photograph Rachel had shown me.
But I recognized him.
Not because I had met him.
Because I had seen him before.
In old pictures.
Standing beside Claire.
Before me.
He looked down.
Then smiled.
“Marcus Bennett.””
My body went tense.
“You know who I am?””
He walked down slowly.
“I know everything about you.””
I stepped in front of Maya.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Daniel stopped.
Then smiled slightly.
“Which one?””
The words hit the room like a slap.
Lily covered her mouth.
Claire looked horrified.
“Daniel, don’t.””
He ignored her.
“You always were good at pretending, Claire.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“You have no right to be here.””
Daniel laughed.
“No right?””
He looked around.
“This house belongs to all of us.””
I stared at Claire.
“You told me you owned this place.””
She whispered:
“I do.””
Daniel smiled.
“Technically.””
I felt my anger rising.
“Explain.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel walked toward the table.
He picked up the notebook.
“You found this.””
I moved forward.
“Put it down.””
He looked at me.
“You think Claire is the villain.””
His smile disappeared.
“You’re wrong.””
I didn’t believe him.
Not after everything.
But then he said something unexpected.
“She’s worse when she’s scared.””
Claire looked at him.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Because when Claire is scared, she destroys everything around her.””
Lily started crying.
“Mom?””
Claire turned immediately.
“No.””
But the damage was already done.
Children don’t need every detail.
They only need enough to understand they were never supposed to carry it.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened six years ago?””
He stared at Claire.
“Tell him.””
Claire shook her head.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Tell him.””
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Lily found the account.””
Rachel nodded.
“The money.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“What money?””
Daniel answered.
“The inheritance.””
My jaw tightened.
“I know about the account.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You know she used your name.””
He stepped closer.
“You don’t know why.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
Daniel continued.
“She wasn’t stealing from you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was trying to pay off a debt.””
The room went silent.
“What debt?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Her eyes filled.
“My mother.””
I didn’t understand.
Daniel did.
He explained.
“Claire’s mother borrowed money from dangerous people before she died.””
Rachel looked away.
“Claire inherited the problem.””
I stared at Claire.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“Because every time I tried, I remembered my mother.””
“What does that mean?””
“She always said people leave when they see the ugly parts.””
I looked at Maya.
And I hated that a part of me understood where the fear came from.
But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
Daniel walked toward the wall.
He pointed at the photographs.
“Lily found proof.””
“What proof?””
He looked at Claire.
“Proof that Claire wasn’t just hiding debt.””
Claire whispered:
“Daniel.””
He turned to me.
“She was hiding the person who caused it.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Claire.
“What person?””
Nobody answered.
Then Maya spoke.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
She was staring at one of the pictures.
“Who is that?””
I followed her finger.
A photograph on the wall.
Claire.
Daniel.
Lily.
And another person standing behind them.
An older woman.
Claire’s mother.
But that wasn’t what caught my attention.
It was the date.
Six years ago.
After Claire told me her mother had died.
I looked at Claire.
“You said she was gone.””
Claire’s face went white.
“She was.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Claire turned.
“Don’t.””
“She wasn’t dead when Lily disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She was alive.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I looked at Claire.
She couldn’t even defend herself.
Because she knew.
I stepped back.
“How many lies?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Marcus…”
“How many?””
She whispered:
“One more.””
And somehow that scared me more than everything before.
“What one?””
Claire looked toward the locked room.
“The one I never told anyone.””
She walked to the corner.
Pulled back an old curtain.
Behind it was a small metal box attached to the wall.
She unlocked it.
Inside was a phone.
An old phone.
A phone from six years ago.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Claire…”
She picked it up.
The screen still worked.
One saved video.
One file.
One date.
The night Lily disappeared.
Claire handed it to me.
“Watch it.””
I pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
A child crying.
Then a voice.
Claire’s voice.
And what she said next made Maya cover her ears.
May you like
Because even after everything I had learned…
I still wasn’t prepared for the truth.
