Chapter 7: The Video
The video was only three minutes long.
But sometimes three minutes is enough to destroy a lifetime.
The screen flickered.
The camera angle was terrible.
A hallway.
A locked door.
A child crying.
Lily.
My hands went cold.
“Stop.””
Claire reached for the phone.
I moved it away.
“No.””
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
I needed to know.
Even if it hurt.
Especially if it hurt.
On the video, young Lily was sitting on the floor.
Her face was red from crying.
“Mommy, please open the door.””
My stomach twisted.
Claire’s voice came from behind the camera.
“You need to calm down.””
The little girl sobbed.
“I want Daddy.””
“You can’t call him.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because he won’t believe you.””
The room went silent.
Maya grabbed my hand.
I squeezed it.
Trying to keep myself together.
The video continued.
Lily looked toward the camera.
“Why are you mad at me?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Because I saw.””
Another pause.
“What did you see?””
“You took the money.””
Claire’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t understand.””
“You said it was wrong.””
“I said be quiet.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then I looked at Claire.
“You locked her in a room.””
She cried.
“Yes.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
“Why?””
“Because I panicked.””
“You panicked?””
My voice rose.
“You locked a five-year-old child in a room because she found out you lied?””
Claire covered her face.
“I was afraid.””
“That is not an excuse.””
“I know.””
For the first time, she didn’t fight.
She didn’t defend herself.
She just stood there.
Broken.
Daniel looked away.
Rachel hugged Lily.
Maya was crying silently.
And that hurt the most.
Because my daughter was watching another child’s pain and realizing adults could be dangerous too.
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, look at me.””
She did.
“None of this is because of you.””
She nodded.
“But Mommy was scared.””
The sentence stopped me.
Because even after everything, Maya was still trying to understand Claire.
Still trying to protect her.
That was the kind of child she was.
Too kind.
Too forgiving.
I looked at Claire.
“You made her become the adult.””
Claire cried harder.
“I know.””
“No, I don’t think you do.””
I stood.
“You think because you were hurt, you’re allowed to hurt people.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s more.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at Claire.
“She still doesn’t know the whole story.””
Claire looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You lied to everyone.””
Rachel looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel took out a folder.
“I found these after Lily disappeared.””
He handed them to me.
Inside were medical records.
Police reports.
And a letter.
The letter was from Claire’s mother.
I read the first line.
Claire, if you are reading this, it means you made the same mistake I did.
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
I continued.
You think hiding things protects people. It doesn’t. It only creates more victims.
The next lines made my hands shake.
The money was never the problem.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Claire sat down.
“I was trying to protect my mother.””
Rachel frowned.
“Your mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Claire’s mother was involved.””
“In what?””
He looked at me.
“The accident.””
The word made everyone freeze.
“What accident?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“The one where Lily disappeared.””
I turned to Claire.
“You said she ran away.””
Claire’s face collapsed.
“She did.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Daniel, stop.””
“She didn’t run away.””
Lily whispered:
“Then where was I?””
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, his anger disappeared.
“You were taken.””
The room went silent.
Rachel grabbed Lily.
“Taken by who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the old phone in my hand buzzed.
A notification.
A new video had appeared.
Impossible.
The phone had no service.
But there it was.
A message.
*You found the wrong truth.*
Then another.
*Ask Claire who picked Lily up that night.*
I looked at Claire.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
“Who picked her up?””
She whispered:
“My mother.””
Rachel stepped back.
“What?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“I thought she was dead.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You never checked.””
“I was told she died.””
“By who?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because we all knew.
The person who had been missing from the story.
The person who had controlled everything.
Claire’s mother.
And then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
An elderly woman stood there.
Holding a cane.
Smiling.
“Hello, Claire.””
Claire went completely still.
“Mom?””
The woman looked past her.
At me.
At Maya.
At Lily.
Then smiled.
“After all these years…”
May you like
She whispered:
“I finally get to meet my granddaughters.””
