Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
Daniel didn't speak for several seconds.
His phone remained pressed to his ear, and his eyes were fixed on the hallway outside the law office.
Then he asked, “Why was my mother there?””
Claire was crying now.
“Daniel, please. I can't explain this over the phone.””
“Then tell me one thing. Did Mom know about the affair before Dad died?””
“Yes.””
The answer came so quickly that Daniel stepped backward.
“Did she know about Marcus's father?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know about the trust?””
“Yes.””
Daniel shut his eyes.
“How long have you known all of this?””
Claire's voice dropped.
“Since before we got married.””
He opened his eyes.
“What?””
“I found the documents when we were organizing your father's estate. I didn't understand everything at first. I only knew there was a property and a secret involving your biological father.””
“And you married me anyway?””
“I loved you.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Don't use that word.””
“I did love you.””
“Then why did you spend months planning to steal from me?””
“I wasn't trying to steal from you!””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was protecting our future.””
“You pretended to carry my child!””
“I was terrified of losing you!””
“You slept with Marcus!””
“I made a terrible mistake!””
Daniel's voice rose.
“You made hundreds of choices, Claire! Every lie required another lie. Every betrayal required another decision.
You didn't fall into this. You built it.””
She began sobbing.
“Please come home. I'll tell you everything.””
Daniel looked at Hensley.
The attorney nodded once, silently reminding him not to let anger dictate what happened next.
Daniel took a breath.
“I'm coming home. But I'm bringing my sister and my attorney.””
Claire hesitated.
“Your attorney?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, you don't need to do that.””
“I think I do.””
He ended the call.
I stood beside him.
“Do you want me to drive?””
He shook his head.
“No. I need to do this.””
When we arrived at Daniel's house, Claire was waiting in the living room.
She wore jeans and a gray sweater, her hair pulled into a loose ponytail. Without the maternity dress and the carefully rounded stomach, she looked smaller.
Ordinary.
Almost fragile.
But the sight of her made Daniel's jaw tighten.
On the coffee table sat a stack of documents, two cups of untouched coffee, and a small velvet box.
Claire stood when we entered.
“Daniel.””
He didn't respond.
She looked at me.
“Could you give us a few minutes?””
“No,” Daniel said.
Claire turned back to him.
“I need to speak to my husband.””
“You're speaking to him.””
She swallowed.
Then she looked at Hensley, who had followed us inside.
“Why is he here?””
“To make sure you don't manipulate me into accepting another lie.””
Claire flinched.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
Daniel walked to the coffee table and picked up the velvet box.
Inside lay a tiny silver bracelet engraved with the words Baby Carter.
He stared at it.
“You bought this for a child that didn't exist.””
Claire's eyes filled.
“I bought it because I wanted a child.””
“Then why didn't you tell me you were struggling?””
“Because I thought you'd leave me.””
“Why?””
She shook her head.
“Because I wasn't enough.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were my wife. You didn't have to earn a place in my life by giving me a baby.””
Claire began crying harder.
“You don't understand how I felt. Every family gathering, your mother asked when we were going to have children. Your sister had Sophie, and everyone adored her. You would hold her and smile, and I'd watch you look at her like she was the most important person in the world.””
“She is my niece.””
“I know. But I wanted you to look at our child that way.””
Daniel placed the bracelet back in the box.
“You could have told me that.””
“I was afraid.””
“So you decided to create a fake pregnancy and let me believe I was going to be a father?””
Claire nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
“I thought I could make everything right before it went too far.””
“When?””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“When were you going to make everything right? Before the baby shower? After it? When I was holding a newborn in the hospital?””
Claire covered her face.
“I don't know.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“That is the first honest answer you've given me.””
She lowered her hands.
“Daniel, I know I've done terrible things. But I need you to understand that the pregnancy wasn't the only reason I stayed with you.””
“Then explain the money.””
Claire looked toward Hensley.
He opened his briefcase and removed copies of the bank statements.
“We have evidence of unauthorized transfers from the trust and documents bearing a signature that Mr. Carter says is not his.””
Claire's face changed.
“I can explain those.””
“Please do,” Hensley replied.
Claire sat down.
She looked at Daniel.
“I was trying to secure our future.””
“By transferring $140,000 to a company you created without telling me?””
“I thought the money was going to be ours.””
“It was already ours to manage according to the trust. You had no right to move it.””
“I believed the restrictions were outdated.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't think you'd agree to the transfers.””
“That's why you forged it.””
Claire began crying again.
Daniel didn't move.
Then he asked the question that had been haunting him since the night before.
“Why did you investigate my biological father?””
Claire looked down.
For several seconds, she didn't answer.
Finally, she said, “Because I found the letter.””
“What letter?””
“The one from your father. The letter about Richard Reed.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You knew before we got married.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I didn't think it mattered.””
“You didn't think it mattered that I might have a different biological father?””
“I thought your father was still your father.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why did you use it against me?””
Claire looked away.
“Because I was afraid of losing everything.””
“Explain.””
She took a shaky breath.
“When I found the documents, I learned about the Hawthorne property. I learned that your father had left you something valuable, but that the trust could be challenged under certain circumstances.””
Hensley leaned forward.
“Which circumstances?””
Claire swallowed.
“I don't know the exact legal language. I only knew that the original agreement had to be reviewed.””
“By whom?””
“Robert Hensley.””
The attorney's expression remained neutral.
Claire continued.
“I contacted another lawyer to ask whether the trust could be challenged. He told me it might be possible if the original documents contained errors or if the beneficiary information was incomplete.””
Daniel shook his head.
“So you decided to manufacture a situation that would give you leverage.””
“No!””
“You hired an attorney. You moved money. You set up a company.
You investigated my parentage. What am I supposed to call that?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I thought if I could secure the money, I could protect myself.””
“From what?””
She whispered, “From being left with nothing.””
Daniel sat down opposite her.
“You were my wife. You lived in my house. You had access to our accounts. You could have asked for anything you needed.””
“I didn't want to ask.””
“Why?””
“Because then you'd know how afraid I was.””
He shook his head slowly.
“You were so afraid of being abandoned that you decided to betray me first.””
Claire's shoulders shook.
“Yes.””
The admission hung between them.
Then Daniel looked at the stack of documents.
“What happened the night Dad died?””
Claire stopped crying.
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she reached into the folder and removed a folded piece of paper.
“I was at the hospital that night.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
“Your mother called me.””
“Why would Mom call you?””
“Because she needed someone to help her retrieve a document from your father's study.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“What document?””
“The original agreement between your father and Richard Reed.””
Hensley leaned forward.
“Why would she need that?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because your father had changed the terms of the Hawthorne trust shortly before he died.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“He changed the beneficiary protections. He made it harder for anyone to challenge the property transfer.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why did you go to the hospital?””
“Your mother believed the original agreement contained a clause that could invalidate the new arrangement. She wanted to find it before the estate was settled.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You helped my mother search for legal documents while my father was dying?””
Claire shook her head.
“No. He had already died when I arrived.””
Daniel looked as though he'd been struck.
“What time?””
“Just after midnight.””
“What time did Dad die?””
“Your mother said he passed away around eleven.””
Daniel gripped the back of a chair.
“You told everyone he died peacefully in his sleep.””
“He did.””
“Then why was Mom looking for documents?””
Claire's eyes filled again.
“Because she was afraid of what your father had changed.””
Hensley took the paper from her hand.
It was a photocopy of a handwritten note.
At the top was our father's name.
Below it were several lines describing changes to the Hawthorne trust.
The final sentence read:
No beneficiary shall be disqualified on the basis of biological parentage alone.
Daniel stared at the words.
“He knew someone might try to challenge it.””
“Yes,” Claire whispered.
“And Mom helped you look for a way around it.””
“She wanted to protect the family.””
“Which family?””
Claire didn't answer.
Daniel looked at her.
“You keep saying you were protecting yourself. You say Mom was protecting the family. You say the money was for our future. Everyone has an excuse.””
He leaned forward.
“But none of you has explained why Dad changed the trust the week before he died.””
Claire pressed her hands together.
“Because he found out about the money.””
“What money?””
“The money I had already moved.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You stole from the trust before Dad died?””
“I transferred some funds before the new restrictions were finalized. I thought I could return them before anyone noticed.””
“How much?””
Claire's voice was barely audible.
“Seventy-five thousand dollars.””
Daniel looked at the statements.
The first unauthorized transfer.
The exact amount.
He closed his eyes.
“And Dad found out.””
Claire nodded.
“He called me to his study two days before he died. He asked me why I'd been accessing the trust records. I told him I was helping you organize the estate.””
“And he believed you?””
“No.””
“What did he say?””
Claire wiped her cheeks.
“He told me he knew about the affair. He knew about the money. And he knew I had been asking questions about Richard Reed.””
Daniel looked at Hensley.
The attorney was listening carefully.
Claire continued.
“He said he wouldn't let me use your biological parentage to take what belonged to you. He told me the trust was protected, and he warned me that if I ever tried to challenge it, he'd make sure the evidence was preserved.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“What happened next?””
Claire stared at the floor.
“I left.””
“And two days later, he died.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stood motionless.
Then he asked the question none of us had wanted to ask.
“Did you have anything to do with his death?””
Claire's head snapped up.
“No!””
“Did you give him anything? Medication? Food? Anything that could have harmed him?””
“No, Daniel! I swear to you, I didn't hurt your father.””
He studied her face.
For once, she didn't look calculating.
She looked terrified.
Hensley intervened.
“Mr. Carter, we should not draw conclusions without evidence. If there are concerns about your father's death, those concerns should be referred to the appropriate authorities.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
Then he looked back at Claire.
“Why did you tell me that Marcus was the only person who knew about the affair?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“No. Because you were trying to control what I knew.””
Claire began crying again.
“I loved you.””
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
“I believe you may have loved me in the only way you understood love. But you treated me like something you owned.””
He took his wedding ring off and placed it on the table.
“I want a divorce.””
Claire stared at the ring.
“No.””
“It's not a question.””
“You can't leave me!””
“I can. And I am.””
She stood, knocking over her coffee cup.
“You promised you'd never abandon me!””
“I promised to be your husband. I didn't promise to let you destroy me.””
Claire reached for his arm.
He stepped back.
“Don't touch me.””
She stopped.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then Claire looked at me.
“You think you've won, don't you?””
I stared at her.
“This isn't a competition.””
“You've always wanted Daniel to yourself.””
“He's my brother.””
“You've always judged me.””
“No, Claire. I trusted you. That's what makes this so painful.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Trust is easy when you have nothing to lose.””
I shook my head.
“You had a husband who loved you. You had a home. You had a family. You had every opportunity to tell the truth.””
Claire's expression twisted.
“And you had everything I wanted.””
Before I could answer, her phone began vibrating on the coffee table.
She looked down.
The name on the screen was Marcus Reed.
Daniel stared at it.
“Answer it.””
Claire shook her head.
“Daniel—”
“Answer the phone.””
She picked it up with trembling fingers.
“Hello?””
Marcus's voice came through the speaker.
“Claire, the police are asking questions about the trust. I told them everything.””
Claire went pale.
“What did you do?””
“I gave them the messages. The photographs. The bank records.””
“You promised you wouldn't!””
“I promised to stop lying.””
Claire's eyes filled with fury.
“You've ruined everything!””
Marcus's voice hardened.
“No, Claire. We ruined it when we decided Daniel's trust was something we could use.””
She ended the call.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“You don't understand what happens next.””
Daniel's face was unreadable.
“Then explain it.””
Claire slowly sat down.
“Because the money wasn't just for me.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She stared at the floor.
“The second account. The one Vanessa told you about. It wasn't only a place to hide money.””
“Then what was it for?””
Claire looked up.
And for the first time since the baby shower, she appeared genuinely afraid of what she was about to say.
“Someone else has been helping me. Someone who knew about your father's secret long before I did.””
She paused.
“Someone who has been waiting for the Hawthorne property for more than thirty years.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Who?””
May you like
Claire looked directly at him.
“Your mother.””
