Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Trust
Daniel didn't move.
The woman stood beneath the porch light in a cream-colored coat, clutching the envelope so tightly that its corners bent beneath her fingers.
She appeared to be in her early forties. Her dark hair was pulled into a neat bun, and a thin gold necklace rested above the collar of her blouse.
She looked nothing like someone arriving to deliver terrible news.
She looked like someone who had practiced what to say and was now terrified that she had forgotten it.
“What child?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa glanced toward the street.
“May I come inside?””
“No.””
She blinked.
“Mr. Carter, this is important.””
“So is the fact that you registered a company at my address and received money from my father's trust. Start explaining.””
Her eyes widened.
“You know about the transfers?””
“I know enough to call the police. Whether I do that tonight depends on what you tell me.””
Vanessa lowered the envelope.
“I didn't know the money was stolen.””
Daniel's expression remained cold.
“Then why did you take it?””
“I thought Claire had authorization.””
“You thought my wife could transfer $140,000 out of a restricted trust without my knowledge?””
“I was told the funds were part of a family investment.””
“By whom?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Claire.””
Daniel stepped aside, but only enough to allow her into the entryway.
“You have five minutes.””
Vanessa entered and looked around the house.
Her gaze stopped on the miniature sneakers beside the staircase.
She looked away quickly.
I noticed.
Daniel noticed, too.
“Why are you looking at those shoes?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because Claire told me about the nursery.””
“Tell me what you know.””
She placed the envelope on the entryway table.
“Claire approached me about six months ago. She said you and she were planning to start a family, and she wanted to create a financial structure that would protect the child.””
Daniel laughed sharply.
“By stealing from my father's trust?””
“I didn't know about the trust restrictions. She showed me documents that appeared to authorize the transfers.””
“Documents she forged.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I understand that now.””
“Why did you register a company with her?””
“She said the company would manage family investments. She wanted to keep the accounts separate from your household finances.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“What's in there?””
“Copies of the documents she gave me. The account records. And a letter.””
“What letter?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“One she wrote before the baby shower.””
I stepped closer.
“Why would she write a letter before the baby shower?””
Vanessa's mouth trembled.
“Because she knew the pregnancy would eventually be exposed.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then she knew the whole thing was going to collapse.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't she stop?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she opened the envelope and removed several pages.
The first was a business registration document.
The second was a bank statement.
The third was a letter written in Claire's handwriting.
Daniel took it.
He read the first paragraph silently.
Then he read it again.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He handed me the page.
The letter was dated three weeks earlier.
Vanessa,
If Daniel discovers that I am not pregnant, I need you to make sure the money is protected. He will be angry, and he will assume I stole it. I need you to explain that the transfers were made for the benefit of our future child.
If he asks about the business, tell him it was part of a family investment plan.
Do not mention the second account.
I looked up.
“The second account?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Claire opened a separate account under a different company name. She told me she wanted a place to keep money that would eventually belong to the child.””
Daniel took the letter back.
“How much?””
“I don't know the current balance.””
“How much was deposited?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Approximately $210,000.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Two hundred and ten thousand dollars?””
“Yes.””
“From where?””
“Several sources.””
“What sources?””
“Some transfers came from your trust. Some came from the consulting company. Others came from a personal account.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Whose personal account?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Claire's.””
“That doesn't answer my question. Where did she get the money?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel took a step toward her.
“You've spent six months helping my wife move money through a company registered to my home, and you don't know where the money came from?””
Vanessa flinched.
“I thought I was helping her protect a child!””
“Which child?””
The question echoed through the entryway.
Vanessa looked at the miniature sneakers again.
Then she whispered, “The child she said was coming.””
Daniel stared at her.
“There was no child.””
“I know that now.””
“Then what was the money for?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Finally, she said, “I think Claire was preparing to leave you.””
Daniel went silent.
The words seemed to strike deeper than the financial betrayal.
He looked toward the staircase, where the nursery waited upstairs.
“She was going to leave me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me she wanted enough money to start over. She said she was afraid you'd divorce her if you discovered the affair.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“She was stealing money from Daniel because she was afraid he might leave her after she betrayed him?””
Vanessa didn't respond.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Then why pretend to be pregnant?””
“Because she thought it would buy her time. She believed that if she made you emotionally invested in the baby, you would never leave her.””
I thought about the shower.
The cake.
The flowers.
The little blue shoes.
The wooden sign.
Every detail had been designed to make Daniel believe he was building a family.
Instead, he had been financing his wife's escape.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What's in the second account now?””
“I don't know.””
“Who has access?””
“Claire and me.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“You have access to an account containing $210,000, and you expect me to believe you don't know where the money came from?””
Vanessa's composure finally broke.
“I didn't take anything for myself!””
“Then prove it.””
She looked at the envelope.
“The records are there.””
Daniel took the remaining documents and carried them into the kitchen.
He placed them beside the laptop and began reviewing the statements.
Vanessa followed, keeping several feet between herself and the table.
I stood near the doorway.
For the next ten minutes, Daniel asked question after question.
Dates.
Amounts.
Account numbers.
Company registrations.
Every time Vanessa couldn't answer, he wrote it down.
He wasn't shouting anymore.
He had become frighteningly calm.
Finally, he stopped at a transaction dated four months earlier.
A transfer of $50,000 had been made from the second account to a law firm.
Daniel read the description.
“Why did Claire pay a lawyer fifty thousand dollars?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Was she preparing for a divorce?””
“I don't think so.””
“Then what was she preparing for?””
Vanessa stared at the document.
“I heard her mention a custody agreement.””
Daniel frowned.
“Custody of what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
He looked up.
“Vanessa.””
She pressed her hands together.
“Claire said she wanted to make sure she could keep the child if something went wrong.””
“There was no child.””
“I know.””
“Then what was the lawyer doing?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“She told me the child would be real eventually.””
Daniel's face changed.
“What does that mean?””
“She said she had a plan.””
“What plan?””
Vanessa looked at me, then back at Daniel.
“She was going to use a surrogate.””
The kitchen went silent.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“You're telling me my wife intended to hire someone to carry a child?””
“Yes.””
“Whose child?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don't know.””
“Was she planning to use my sperm?””
“I don't know.””
“Was she planning to use Marcus's?””
“I don't know!””
The final words came out as a sob.
Vanessa pressed a hand to her mouth.
“I'm sorry. I know how terrible this sounds. But Claire told me that once the baby arrived, everything would be different.
She said you'd forgive her. She said you'd be so happy to become a father that the affair wouldn't matter anymore.””
Daniel looked as though he might be sick.
“She was going to manufacture an entire family to trap me.””
Vanessa didn't deny it.
He pushed the documents away.
“Get out.””
She looked startled.
“Mr. Carter—”
“Get out of my house.””
“I came here because I wanted to help.””
“You came here because you realized the lie was falling apart and you were afraid you'd be blamed for the money.””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I didn't steal it.””
“Then cooperate with the authorities. Give them every record you have. If you helped my wife move money, you can explain it to the people investigating her.””
He pointed toward the front door.
“Leave.””
Vanessa gathered her coat and walked toward the entryway.
Before she reached the door, she turned back.
“There is one more thing.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Of course there is.””
Vanessa clutched the envelope.
“The lawyer Claire paid isn't a family attorney. He's an attorney who specializes in trusts and estate disputes.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What estate dispute?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“Your father left you more than the money in that trust, didn't he?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Claire told me there was a second inheritance. A property. Something your father never told the rest of the family about.””
Daniel stood motionless.
My brother had never mentioned another property.
I had grown up with him. I knew about our father's house, his retirement account, and the trust he'd established before he died.
But I'd never heard of a secret inheritance.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you hear that?””
“Claire told me.””
“What property?””
“I don't know. She said your father had left something valuable in a separate legal arrangement. She believed that if she could establish a claim to it, she would never have to worry about money again.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the counter.
“My father died two years ago. Why would Claire suddenly be investigating his estate?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because she found a document.””
“What document?””
“A letter from your father.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa took a small folded sheet of paper from the envelope.
“This is a copy.””
Daniel accepted it with trembling fingers.
The letter was short, written in his father's familiar handwriting.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped I could prevent.
There is a matter concerning our family that I never had the courage to explain while I was alive. The truth is documented in the file I left with my attorney.
Do not allow anyone to claim what belongs to you without knowing the full story.
Especially not someone who believes money can purchase a place in this family.
Daniel read the letter twice.
Then he looked at the signature.
His father's name was written at the bottom.
The date was from three months before his death.
I felt the room tilt around me.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “what is your father talking about?””
He didn't answer.
He turned the page over.
A handwritten note appeared on the back.
An attorney's name.
An office address.
And a case reference number.
Daniel took out his phone and photographed the note.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell me about this before?””
“Because Claire told me it was none of my business.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
“Of what she would do if I told you the truth.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What did she threaten you with?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then she looked toward the front door.
For a moment, she seemed to be listening for something.
Finally, she whispered, “She said if I ever told you what happened to your father, she'd make sure I went to prison for the money.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened to my father?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know the whole story. I only know what Claire told me.””
“Then tell me exactly what she said.””
Vanessa took a trembling breath.
“She said your father didn't die without knowing the truth about his family.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at him with tears running down her cheeks.
“Claire said your father knew you weren't his biological son.””
For several seconds, the house was utterly silent.
Daniel stared at her.
Then he looked down at the letter in his hands.
“No,” he whispered.
Vanessa didn't move.
“No. That's impossible.””
Daniel's voice grew louder.
“My father raised me. He loved me. He never treated me like anything other than his son.””
“I know.””
“He was my father.””
“I know.””
Daniel shook his head, tears filling his eyes.
“Then why would he write this letter?””
Vanessa looked at the papers on the kitchen island.
“Because Claire found out who your biological father was.””
Daniel went completely still.
I felt my own breath catch.
“Who?”” I whispered.
Vanessa looked at my brother.
May you like
Then she gave him the name that would turn every memory of his childhood into a question.
“Marcus Reed's father.””
