Chapter 8: The Truth That Finally Had Witnesses

The flashing lights painted the walls of Simone’s house in shades of blue and red.

For years, this home had been a place where silence lived.

A place where arguments disappeared behind closed doors.

A place where Simone learned how to lower her voice.

How to apologize first.

How to make peace even when she wasn't the one who caused the damage.

But tonight, the entire street could see.

The secret she had protected was no longer hidden.

Simone stood behind the living room window, watching two police officers approach Andre.

He wasn't yelling.

He wasn't angry.

That almost frightened her more.

Because she knew that version of him.

The calm version.

The version who could make anyone else believe he was reasonable.

The version who could look a stranger in the eye and say exactly what he needed them to hear.

One officer spoke to him.

Andre pointed toward the house.

Even from inside, Simone could tell he was explaining.

Creating a story.

Building a version where he was the victim.

Elaine stood beside her.

“You don't have to watch.””

Simone swallowed.

“Yes, I do.””

“Why?””

“Because I spent too long looking away.””

Her mother looked at her.

And for the first time that night, Simone wasn't crying.

She was scared.

But she was present.

The front door opened when the officers approached.

One of them stepped inside.

“Mrs. Hayes?””

Simone nodded.

“Yes.””

“I’m Officer Daniels. We received a call about a domestic disturbance.””

Simone glanced toward Andre outside.

“He’s my husband.””

The officer nodded.

“Can you tell me what happened tonight?””

For a moment, Simone froze.

Not because she didn't know.

Because she knew too well.

The truth was sitting inside her chest, but saying it aloud felt like crossing a line she could never uncross.

Elaine gently touched her arm.

“You can.””

Simone took a breath.

“He hurt me.””

The words sounded different outside her head.

Real.

Permanent.

Officer Daniels watched her carefully.

“When did this happen?””

“Last weekend.””

“And tonight?””

Simone looked down.

“He came back after I found out about something.””

“What did you find out?””

Simone looked toward Karen.

Karen stepped forward.

“I was involved with him.””

The officer looked at her.

“I’m sorry?””

Karen took a breath.

“I was having an affair with him.””

Simone saw the officer’s expression change.

Not judgment.

Not surprise.

Just attention.

“And you witnessed what happened last weekend?””

Karen nodded.

“Yes.””

The second officer wrote something down.

“Can you describe what you saw?””

Karen looked at Simone.

Then answered.

“They were arguing.””

Her voice shook.

“Andre was angry.””

“About what?””

“Me.””

Simone looked away.

Even after everything, hearing it still hurt.

Karen continued.

“He found out Simone saw messages between us.””

The officer looked at Simone.

“Is that correct?””

Simone nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened after that?””

Karen swallowed.

“He grabbed her arm.””

She paused.

“Then he pushed her.””

Silence.

The officer looked at Simone.

“Is that how you remember it?””

Simone closed her eyes.

For weeks, she had forced herself to doubt.

But now there were witnesses.

There were recordings.

There were facts.

“Yes.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

The officer nodded.

“Did he cause the injury around your eye?””

Simone hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

But it also felt freeing.

Because she wasn't carrying it alone anymore.

Outside, Andre raised his voice.

The officer near him immediately turned.

Simone watched through the window.

“What is he saying?”” Elaine asked.

Karen looked.

“He’s blaming me.””

Simone wasn't surprised.

She should have been angry.

But instead, she felt tired.

So tired.

The officer came back inside a few minutes later.

“Mr. Hayes says there is another side to this.””

Simone almost smiled.

Of course there was.

“There always is,” she whispered.

The officer looked at her.

“Can you explain?””

Simone looked down.

Then she said something she had never said before.

“He always has another side.””

The officer waited.

“He always has a reason.””

Her voice grew steadier.

“He says I’m too emotional. He says I misunderstand. He says I make things bigger than they are.””

She looked at him.

“But tonight, I finally realized something.””

“What?””

Simone looked toward the window.

“That every time I tried to explain what he did, I ended up defending him instead.””

The officer nodded slowly.

“Do you have somewhere safe you can stay tonight?””

Simone opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

The question was simple.

But her answer was complicated.

“I don’t know.””

Elaine immediately answered.

“She stays with me.””

Simone looked at her.

“You sure?””

Her mother looked almost offended.

“I waited years for you to ask.””

That broke something inside Simone.

A small smile appeared through the tears.

A real one.

Not the one she wore for pictures.

Not the one she used to convince people everything was fine.

A real one.

The officers eventually stepped outside again.

Simone didn't hear everything.

But she saw Andre’s posture change.

The confidence disappeared.

When he looked back toward the house, his eyes found hers.

For a second, Simone saw the man she married.

The man who held her hand during hard times.

The man who knew her favorite song.

The man she loved.

Then she remembered the recordings.

The bruises.

The lies.

And she understood something painful.

Someone can have good moments with you and still hurt you.

Both things can be true.

A few minutes later, Officer Daniels returned.

“Mr. Hayes will need to leave for tonight.””

Simone nodded.

She expected relief.

Instead, she felt grief.

Because this was the end of something.

Even if it had been broken for a long time.

After the officers left, the house became quiet again.

But it was a different kind of quiet.

Not the silence of fear.

The silence after survival.

Karen sat on the couch.

“I’m sorry.””

Simone looked at her.

Karen shook her head.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

Simone stayed quiet.

“I know I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

Karen nodded.

“I did.””

There was no excuse.

No explanation.

Just accountability.

And somehow, that was the first honest thing anyone had given Simone all night.

“I don’t forgive you yet,” Simone said.

Karen nodded.

“I understand.””

“But…”

Karen looked up.

“But I believe you told the truth tonight.””

Karen’s eyes filled.

“Thank you.””

Simone looked away.

She wasn't ready to forgive.

Maybe she never would.

But she was ready to stop carrying everyone else's guilt.

Later, after Karen left and Elaine prepared the guest room, Simone sat alone in her bedroom.

Her bedroom.

Not theirs.

Not Andre’s.

Hers.

She opened her closet.

Half of it was his clothes.

She looked at them.

The shirts.

The jackets.

The pieces of a person who had taken up so much space in her life.

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

She froze.

For a second, she thought it was Andre.

But it wasn't.

It was from an unknown number.

She opened it.

One sentence.

*You think you know the truth about Andre. You don’t.*

Simone stared.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask him what happened three years ago.*

Her heart started racing.

Three years ago.

The year they got married.

The year everyone said their lives were perfect.

The year she had believed she was finally safe.

Another message came.

*Ask him why his first wife left.*

Simone stopped breathing.

First wife?

She stared at the screen.

Because she knew every story Andre had ever told her.

Every relationship.

Every heartbreak.

Every reason he gave for why he was the way he was.

But one thing she had never heard was that he had been married before.

The bedroom door opened.

Elaine stepped in.

“Sweetheart?””

Simone looked up.

Her face had changed.

“What is it?””

Simone slowly turned the phone toward her.

Her mother read the message.

And the color drained from her face.

“Simone…”

“What?””

Elaine looked at her.

“I need to tell you something.””

Simone’s heartbeat quickened.

“What?””

Her mother sat down slowly.

“Before you married Andre…”

A pause.

“I tried to warn you.””

Simone stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Elaine looked toward the closed bedroom door.

Then back at her daughter.

“I found something three years ago.””

“What?””

“A woman contacted me.””

Simone felt cold.

“What woman?””

May you like

Elaine whispered:

“His first wife.””
