Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Bruise
For a moment, Simone forgot how to breathe.
The room around her seemed to disappear.
The kitchen.
The lights.
The sound of the refrigerator humming in the corner.
Everything faded except one sentence.
*We were having an affair.*
She looked at Andre.
Not Karen.
Not her mother.
Him.
Because somehow, even after everything, some part of her still waited for him to deny it.
She waited for him to laugh.
To say Karen was lying.
To say this was another misunderstanding.
To say something that would make the ground beneath her feet feel solid again.
But Andre didn't say anything.
And that silence hurt more than the confession.
“Say something.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Andre looked at her.
“Simone.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Don't say my name like that.””
“Like what?””
“Like you’re worried about me.””
His face tightened.
“I am worried about you.””
She laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You're worried about me?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
Andre stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
Karen immediately shook her head.
“No, you can't.””
Andre looked at her sharply.
“Stay out of this.””
Karen’s expression changed.
A year ago, Simone might not have noticed.
But tonight she did.
Karen wasn't afraid of anger.
She was afraid of him.
“I stayed out of it for too long,” Karen said quietly.
Andre looked away.
Elaine stood beside Simone like a wall.
“How long?””
Nobody answered.
Elaine looked at Andre.
“How long was this affair?””
Andre rubbed his forehead.
“This isn't helping.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“It’s complicated.””
Elaine’s eyes narrowed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Her voice became colder.
“People say ‘complicated’ when the truth makes them uncomfortable.””
Simone stared at the floor.
She felt numb.
That was the strangest part.
She had imagined discovering something like this before.
She had imagined screaming.
Throwing things.
Walking away.
But now that it was happening, she felt empty.
Like her body had decided there was too much pain to process.
“How long?”” Simone asked.
Karen looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Simone looked up.
“Don't apologize.””
Karen swallowed.
“I should have.””
“No.””
Simone’s voice shook.
“I need an answer.””
Karen looked down.
“Almost a year.””
The words landed slowly.
Almost a year.
Simone closed her eyes.
A year.
A year of birthdays.
A year of holidays.
A year of pretending everything was normal.
She remembered their anniversary dinner three months earlier.
Andre had held her hand across the table.
He had told her she was the best thing that ever happened to him.
She remembered believing him.
The memory felt embarrassing now.
“How?””
The question came out quietly.
Karen looked confused.
“What?””
“How did you look at me?””
Nobody moved.
Simone looked at her.
“You came into my house.””
Karen’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You sat in my living room.””
“I know.””
“You smiled at me.””
“I know.””
“And all that time…”
Her voice cracked.
“You knew.””
Karen wiped a tear.
“Yes.””
Simone turned away.
She couldn't look at her.
Because somehow, betrayal from Andre hurt differently than betrayal from Karen.
Andre was her husband.
But Karen had been close enough to see her life.
Close enough to know.
Close enough to lie.
“I hate that I feel sorry for you,” Simone whispered.
Karen looked at her.
“What?””
“Because I can tell you regret it.””
Karen’s face crumpled.
“I do.””
“But you still did it.””
“Yes.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
Simone looked at Andre.
“And you?””
He was quiet.
“What about you?””
Andre looked at her.
“I made mistakes.””
The words were so small.
So controlled.
Simone stared.
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
“You had an affair for a year.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You hurt me.””
His expression changed.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
The sentence made Simone almost smile.
Because it sounded like every apology before it.
Not I hurt you.
Only I didn't mean to.
She stepped closer.
“You keep saying you didn't want to hurt me.””
Andre looked at her.
“Because I didn't.””
“But you did.””
Silence.
She pointed toward her eye.
“You did.””
For the first time, Andre looked directly at the bruise.
His face shifted.
Not guilt.
Something else.
Regret.
But Simone couldn't tell if it was regret for hurting her.
Or regret that people knew.
Karen spoke quietly.
“Simone.””
She looked at her.
“There’s something else.””
Andre immediately turned.
“No.””
Karen froze.
Simone noticed.
“What?””
Andre shook his head.
“Don’t.””
Karen looked between them.
Then at Simone.
“I should have told you everything.””
Simone felt her heart race.
“What else?””
Andre’s voice became sharp.
“Karen.””
“No.””
Karen looked at Simone.
“I’m done protecting him.””
Elaine stepped closer.
“Tell her.””
Karen took a deep breath.
“Last weekend wasn't the first time he got physical.””
Simone went still.
The room became silent.
“What?””
Karen looked down.
“He told me you had a bad temper.””
Simone stared.
“He told me you started fights.””
A cold feeling spread through her.
“Why would he tell you that?””
Karen looked at Andre.
“Because he wanted me to believe he was the victim.””
Simone looked at her husband.
Andre shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Karen continued.
“He showed me pictures.””
Simone frowned.
“What pictures?””
“Of bruises.””
The room went quiet.
Simone looked confused.
“What?””
“He told me you hurt yourself and blamed him.””
Simone felt sick.
“What?””
Andre stepped forward.
“Stop.””
But Karen kept going.
“I believed him.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought he was trapped in a bad marriage.””
Simone looked at Andre.
Her chest tightened.
“You told her I hurt you?””
Andre didn't answer.
That was enough.
Elaine looked horrified.
“He lied about you?””
Simone felt dizzy.
All those times she questioned herself.
All those times she wondered if she was too sensitive.
Too emotional.
Too difficult.
He had been building a story.
A story where he was the victim.
And she was the problem.
“I can't believe you.””
Andre looked at her.
“Simone—”
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You don't get to explain this.””
“I can explain.””
“You have explained everything.””
Her voice rose.
“You explain until I don't know what happened anymore.””
Andre’s face changed.
“That's not fair.””
“Fair?””
Simone laughed.
“You want to talk about fair?””
She pointed toward the door.
“Fair would have been telling the truth.””
Andre looked at Elaine.
“You're really going to let her believe this?””
Elaine stared at him.
“I believe my daughter.””
The words hit harder than Simone expected.
Because some part of her still needed to hear them.
Andre looked back at Simone.
“After everything I've done for you?””
There it was.
The reminder.
The debt.
Simone looked at him.
“What have you done for me?””
His face hardened.
“I supported you.””
“I supported you too.””
“I built this life.””
“We built this life.””
“No.””
The word came quickly.
Too quickly.
“I built stability.””
Simone stared.
And suddenly she saw it.
The entire marriage.
Not as she had experienced it.
But as he saw it.
A place where she owed him.
A place where love was something he gave and could remove.
Karen whispered:
“Simone, there’s one more thing.””
Everyone turned.
Karen looked terrified.
“What?””
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out her phone.
“I saved something.””
Andre’s face changed instantly.
“Karen.””
She looked at him.
“I should have done this months ago.””
Simone watched as Karen unlocked her phone.
Her fingers trembled.
Then she pressed play.
A recording.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Andre’s voice filled the room.
Angry.
Cold.
Unrecognizable.
The sound made Simone’s blood run cold.
Because she knew that voice.
She had heard it behind closed doors.
The recording continued.
And then came the words that made Elaine cover her mouth.
Andre’s voice said:
“Sometimes people only learn when you make them afraid.””
Simone stared at him.
Because those words weren't from last weekend.
They were from a conversation he thought nobody else had heard.
Karen looked at her.
“I recorded this the night I realized I was helping him hurt you.””
Simone’s heart pounded.
Andre stepped forward.
“Give me that phone.””
Karen moved back.
“No.””
“Karen.””
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“Give me the phone.””
And Simone saw it.
The same look.
The same warning.
The same control.
But this time…
He wasn't looking at a woman he could silence.
May you like
Because everyone was watching.
And everyone finally saw him.
