Chapter 7: The Night Simone Finally Ran
The message stayed on the screen for several seconds.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Five words.
That was all it took to change the feeling inside the house.
*He knows about the recordings. Run.*
Simone stared at the phone.
Her first thought wasn't about herself.
It was about how quickly Andre had reacted.
How quickly he had gone from calm to desperate.
How quickly he had walked out the door.
Like he already knew what was coming.
Elaine stood up.
“Who sent that?””
Karen looked at the number.
Her face turned pale.
“I don’t know.””
“Can you call it?””
Karen shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s blocked.””
Simone looked toward the front door.
The place where Andre had stood only minutes ago.
The place where he had looked at her and said:
This isn’t over.
She had heard those words before.
Not exactly.
But close enough.
Every time she thought she had reached the edge, he found a way to pull her back.
A gift.
An apology.
A promise.
A reminder of everything they had built.
And somehow, every time, she ended up staying.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, she had seen behind the curtain.
And once you saw the truth, you couldn't pretend the lie was beautiful anymore.
Elaine touched her shoulder.
“Simone.””
She looked at her mother.
“We need to leave.””
The words surprised her.
Not because they were wrong.
Because they felt impossible.
Leave.
Such a simple word.
But Simone had spent years convincing herself she couldn't.
“Where would I go?””
Elaine looked at her.
“Anywhere.””
Simone shook her head.
“You don't understand.””
“I do.””
“No, Mom.””
Her voice broke.
“He controls everything.””
Elaine frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Simone looked down.
“The accounts.””
A pause.
“The house.””
Another pause.
“My car.””
Elaine’s expression changed.
“What?””
“He said it was easier if everything was together.””
Karen looked at her.
“Together?””
Simone nodded.
“He handled the bills.””
Elaine slowly sat back down.
“Oh, Simone.””
“I thought it was normal.””
Her voice became smaller.
“I thought married couples did that.””
“They do.””
Elaine held her hand.
“But not when one person uses it to trap the other.””
The word hit her.
Trap.
Simone looked away.
Because she had avoided that word for a long time.
She had called it support.
She had called it teamwork.
She had called it love.
But maybe the name didn't matter.
The feeling did.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Simone looked down.
Andre.
Her heart jumped.
Karen immediately shook her head.
“Don’t answer.””
Simone stared at the screen.
“He’ll know I’m ignoring him.””
Elaine looked at her.
“Let him.””
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then it stopped.
A second later, a message appeared.
*Andre: We need to talk. Alone.*
Simone stared.
Then another.
*Andre: Don’t let them turn you against me.*
Another.
*Andre: I know you’re scared. I know your mother is upset. But this can be fixed.*
Simone felt something strange.
Almost sadness.
Because those words sounded exactly like the man she had loved.
The man who brought her coffee in bed.
The man who held her when her father was sick.
The man who remembered every small detail about her.
That was the cruelest part.
He wasn't a monster every second.
If he had been, leaving would have been easy.
Elaine watched her face.
“You’re thinking about forgiving him.””
Simone looked up.
“I don’t know.””
Her mother nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
“Yes, I do.””
Elaine squeezed her hand.
“Because you love him.””
Simone looked down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I hate that I do.””
“I know.””
“I hate that after everything, I still miss him.””
“I know.””
“I hate that part of me wants him to come back and tell me it was all a mistake.””
Elaine pulled her closer.
“That part of you is grieving.””
Simone closed her eyes.
“Grieving what?””
“The man you thought he was.””
The words broke her.
Because that was exactly it.
She wasn't just losing a husband.
She was losing the story of her marriage.
The future she imagined.
The person she thought she knew.
Karen quietly stood.
“I should go.””
Simone looked at her.
“Where?””
“My apartment.””
“Is that safe?””
Karen hesitated.
The hesitation answered.
“No.””
Elaine looked at her.
“Then you’re not going alone.””
Karen looked surprised.
“Why?””
Elaine gave a tired smile.
“Because tonight, nobody leaves here alone.””
For the first time, Simone saw Karen cry.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just a quiet tear.
Because maybe she had spent months believing she deserved to face everything by herself.
Simone understood that feeling.
Too well.
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone stopped.
Simone’s entire body went tense.
Elaine turned off the kitchen light.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
Simone stood.
Her voice surprised even herself.
“No.””
Elaine looked at her.
“I’m done hiding.””
The three women moved quietly toward the living room.
The house was dark.
The curtains were closed.
A shadow moved outside.
Simone held her breath.
Then came a knock.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
Andre.
Because he knew how to appear calm.
Elaine whispered:
“Don’t open it.””
Simone stared at the door.
Another knock.
Then his voice.
“Simone.””
Her chest tightened.
“I know you’re inside.””
Nobody answered.
“Please.””
The word sounded different coming from him.
Almost sincere.
Almost.
“I just want to talk.””
Simone looked at Karen.
Karen shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Andre knocked again.
“Simone, I made mistakes.””
She closed her eyes.
There it was.
The word.
Mistakes.
Not choices.
Not actions.
Mistakes.
“I know you’re angry.””
Simone stood frozen.
“But you know me.””
Her heart hurt.
Because she did know him.
That was the problem.
“I know we’ve been through a lot.””
His voice softened.
“You and me.””
Simone looked at the photographs on the wall.
Their wedding.
Their vacations.
Their anniversaries.
The memories that once made her happy.
Now they felt like evidence.
“I know you think I’m the enemy right now.””
A pause.
“But I’m still your husband.””
Simone felt something shift.
A year ago, that sentence would have worked.
Maybe even a month ago.
But not tonight.
Because being her husband had never stopped him from hurting her.
A husband was supposed to be the person you ran toward.
Not the person you needed to run from.
Andre’s voice changed.
“Simone.””
No answer.
Then:
“If you don’t open this door, I’m going to have to do something I don’t want to do.””
Elaine looked at Simone.
The threat was hidden.
But everyone heard it.
Karen whispered:
“He’s escalating.””
Simone looked toward the door.
And something inside her became clear.
She wasn't the woman in the bathroom mirror anymore.
The woman hiding bruises.
The woman creating excuses.
The woman asking permission to be hurt.
She was someone else.
Someone who was scared.
But moving anyway.
She picked up her phone.
Opened the emergency contacts.
Her finger hovered.
Andre knocked again.
Harder.
“Simone.””
Elaine stepped beside her.
“Whatever you choose, choose it because you want to.””
Simone looked at her.
Then at the phone.
Then at the door.
And pressed the button.
The call connected.
A calm voice answered.
“Emergency services. What is your situation?””
Simone looked at the door.
At the man she once loved.
At the life she was finally choosing to leave.
And she said:
“My husband is outside my house.””
Her voice shook.
“But this time…”
She looked at her mother.
At Karen.
At the two women who had stood beside her when she finally stopped standing alone.
“This time, I’m not opening the door.””
Outside, the knocking stopped.
For three seconds, everything was silent.
Then Andre said something through the door.
Something that made Simone’s blood run cold.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Simone closed her eyes.
Because she finally understood.
He wasn't afraid of losing her.
He was afraid of losing control.

And when the police lights appeared at the end of the street…
Andre was no longer the person everyone believed him to be.
