Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Stood Beside Her

For the first time in her life, Lena Hart was afraid of the silence.

Not the kind of silence that came before a storm.

Not the silence of empty streets or abandoned buildings.

This was worse.

This was the silence of people thinking.

Everyone inside the private dining room of the Grandeur Hotel had become a suspect.

Victor.

Clara.

Dmitri.

Even herself.

The last words from Leon Mercer’s phone call repeated inside Lena’s mind.

*The person who ordered your father’s death was standing beside Lena all night.*

Not somewhere far away.

Not hidden in another city.

Beside her.

Watching.

Waiting.

Victor slowly placed the phone on the table.

Nobody spoke.

Then Dmitri broke the silence.

“Boss.””

Victor didn’t answer.

“Boss.””

This time, Victor looked at him.

“What?””

Dmitri’s eyes moved toward Clara.

The accusation was obvious.

Clara saw it.

“You think it’s me?””

Dmitri’s expression remained cold.

“You were the only one who knew about the evidence.””

Clara laughed softly.

“After everything I just told you?””

“That’s exactly why.””

Victor looked between them.

“Enough.””

The command was sharp.

But Lena noticed something.

He wasn’t defending Clara.

Not completely.

Because he was questioning everyone too.

Including himself.

Lena stepped away from the table.

“I need air.””

Victor turned.

“Lena.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I need one minute where nobody tells me another impossible thing.””

Nobody stopped her.

She walked out into the hotel hallway.

The same hallway where she had carried trays.

The same hallway where wealthy guests had ignored her.

The same hallway where, hours earlier, she had been just a maid.

Now every person she passed looked at her differently.

Because secrets had a way of changing how people saw you.

She reached the service staircase and sat down.

For a moment, she let herself breathe.

Then she heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

She looked up.

Victor.

Of course.

“You always follow people?”” she asked.

“Only when they walk away from danger.””

She almost smiled.

Almost.

“You don’t know if I’m danger.””

Victor stopped.

“No.””

A pause.

“I don’t.””

That answer surprised her.

He sat on the step below her.

Not above.

Not like a king.

Just a man.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Lena said:

“Did you ever hate yourself?””

Victor looked at her.

The question seemed to surprise him.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“When?””

“Every time I realized the person I became was necessary.””

Lena looked down.

“That sounds like an excuse.””

“It is.””

The answer came immediately.

She looked at him.

Victor stared ahead.

“I spent years telling myself I was doing terrible things for good reasons.””

“And were you?””

“Sometimes.””

“And other times?””

He was quiet.

“Other times I was just a man with power who convinced himself he deserved it.””

The confession sat between them.

Heavy.

Real.

Lena had expected arrogance.

Instead, she found regret.

A knock came from the stairwell door.

Dmitri appeared.

“We found something.””

Victor stood.

“What?””

Dmitri handed him a small envelope.

“It was hidden inside the hotel security office.””

Lena frowned.

“Who put it there?””

Dmitri looked at her.

“That’s the problem.””

Victor opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Everyone froze.

It showed Lena.

Not tonight.

Years ago.

She was sixteen.

Standing outside a hospital.

Beside her was her mother.

Alive.

But there was another person in the picture.

A man standing in the background.

Watching them.

Victor looked closer.

His expression changed.

“Who is he?”” Lena asked.

Victor didn’t answer.

Because he recognized him.

Dmitri did too.

“No.””

Lena looked between them.

“Who?””

Victor slowly turned the photograph around.

The man in the background was younger.

But unmistakable.

A familiar face.

“Your father’s closest friend.””

Lena frowned.

“My father’s friend?””

Victor nodded.

“Someone who disappeared after your father died.””

“Who?””

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Adrian Hart.””

Lena stared.

The room seemed to tilt.

“That’s my father’s name.””

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“Your father was Daniel Hart.””

The blood drained from her face.

“What did you say?””

Victor pointed at the photograph.

“The man behind you.””

Lena looked again.

The stranger.

The man she had never seen.

The man who looked exactly like her father.

Dmitri whispered:

“Lena…”

A terrible realization formed.

Her father had not just left secrets.

He had left lies.

Victor picked up the photograph.

“Someone wanted us to find this.””

“Why?””

Before Victor could answer, the lights went out.

The entire hotel fell into darkness.

A second later, alarms began screaming.

Guests shouted in the distance.

Security radios erupted.

Then came a sound Lena knew too well.

A gunshot.

Victor grabbed her hand.

“Stay close.””

They moved through the darkness.

Another shot.

Then another.

Dmitri fired back.

Someone was inside.

Someone who knew the hotel.

Someone who knew every exit.

They reached the ballroom.

The place where everything began.

The shattered champagne glass had been cleaned away.

The tables were gone.

But Lena could still smell the memory of poison.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Lena.””

Everyone froze.

The voice was familiar.

Her mother.

But it wasn’t a phone call.

It was a recording.

“Lena, if you hear this, it means they failed.””

Victor looked up.

The security screens flickered.

A video appeared.

Lena’s mother sat in a dark room.

She looked exhausted.

Afraid.

“Your father wanted you to know the truth when you were old enough.””

The recording continued.

“He wasn’t Daniel Hart.””

Lena stopped breathing.

“He was Victor Romano’s older brother.””

The world went silent.

Victor stared at the screen.

Impossible.

“No,” he whispered.

The recording continued.

“Your real name is not Lena Hart.””

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

May you like

A name.

*Lena Romano.*
