Chapter 7: The Fiancée’s Secret

Clara Whitmore had always looked like she belonged in rooms like the Grandeur Hotel.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Perfect dress.

Lena had noticed her earlier that night.

Everyone had.

Women admired her.

Men wanted her attention.

She was exactly the kind of person Lena had spent her life standing behind.

Invisible.

Except now, everything about Clara looked different.

Because perfection was sometimes just another disguise.

Victor found her two hours later.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

She sat alone in the private dining room of the hotel.

A cup of tea rested untouched in front of her.

When Victor entered, she smiled sadly.

“You know.””

It was not a question.

Victor closed the door.

“You knew about Leon.””

Clara looked down.

“I knew enough.””

Lena stood behind Victor.

She wanted answers.

She needed them.

“Why?”” Lena asked.

Clara looked at her.

“Because my father created the Black Crown.””

The words felt unreal.

“My father was a monster,” Clara continued.

“He built it from nothing. He believed fear was the only thing people respected.””

Victor stared.

“Your father died ten years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Leon continue?””

Clara looked toward the window.

“Because Leon was his favorite student.””

Lena felt sick.

“Student?””

Clara nodded.

“My father taught him everything.””

Victor walked closer.

“And you?””

Clara looked at him.

“I spent my life trying to destroy what he created.””

The room went silent.

Lena looked between them.

“You were investigating Leon?””

“Yes.””

“Then why marry Victor?””

Clara’s expression softened.

“Because Victor was the only person powerful enough to stop him.””

Victor frowned.

“You used me.””

Clara looked hurt.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

“I did.””

Victor looked away.

“That’s what I do,” Clara whispered.

“I use people.””

Lena noticed something.

Regret.

Real regret.

Clara reached into her purse.

She removed a small envelope.

“I was going to give this to you tonight.””

Victor took it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Leon.

Standing beside Clara’s father.

And beside them…

Victor.

Much younger.

Lena looked confused.

“You knew him before?””

Victor nodded slowly.

“My father worked with Clara’s father.””

She stared.

“So the Black Crown existed before you?””

“Yes.””

Victor’s voice was quiet.

“And I spent my life trying to destroy it.””

Clara looked at him.

“But you never told anyone.””

Victor said nothing.

Because again, she was right.

Lena felt exhausted.

Everyone around her had secrets.

Everyone had hidden pieces of the truth.

Even the people trying to help.

Clara turned toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

Lena looked at her.

“For what?””

“For your father.””

That was the first time someone had said it like they meant it.

Not as a fact.

Not as information.

As grief.

Lena looked away.

“Did he suffer?””

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

Lena closed her eyes.

Victor stepped closer.

“Lena.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I need the truth.””

Clara slowly nodded.

“Your father was alive for three days after Leon took him.””

The room became silent.

Lena felt the air leave her lungs.

“Three days?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Clara looked down.

“He hid the evidence.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victor’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Dmitri’s voice came through.

“Boss.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found Leon.””

Victor straightened.

“Where?””

“Leaving the city.””

“Stop him.””

Another silence.

Then Dmitri said:

“Boss… there’s something else.””

Victor waited.

“Leon wasn’t alone.””

Lena felt cold.

“Who was with him?””

Dmitri answered.

And Victor’s face changed.

“It was your mother.””

Lena froze.

“My mother died when I was twelve.””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Dmitri’s voice came again.

“She’s alive.””
