Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Names

The door handle moved slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

The two girls stood on either side of me, each holding one of my hands.

Maya.

Natalie.

Two children who should have grown up together.

Two children who had been turned into pieces of a secret.

I looked at Marcus.

“The person outside.””

His face was pale.

“Dr. Adrian Vale.””

I frowned.

“Your brother?””

Marcus nodded.

“My father.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“And you said he started all of this?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“He did.””

The handle stopped turning.

Then came a voice.

“Marcus.””

A chill ran through me.

The voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Open the door.””

Marcus stepped back.

The fear on his face told me everything.

This wasn’t a stranger.

This was someone who had controlled his entire life.

Someone who had made people disappear.

Someone who had made everyone in this room afraid.

Victoria moved toward the door.

Marcus grabbed her arm.

“Don’t.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you know what he does.””

Her eyes hardened.

“I know exactly what he does.””

Then she pulled away.

The door opened slightly.

A man appeared.

Older.

Silver hair.

A perfectly pressed suit.

A doctor’s calm expression.

He looked around the room.

At the hidden records.

At the children.

At me.

Then he smiled.

“Claire.””

I hated how normal he sounded.

Like this was a meeting.

Like there weren’t two terrified children standing behind me.

“Who are you?””

He looked almost offended.

“Adrian Vale.””

I stared at Marcus.

“Your father.””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Disappointing.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Adrian’s eyes moved to Maya and Natalie.

“There they are.””

I stepped in front of them.

“Stay away.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re protecting.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

“That is your problem.””

I tightened my fists.

“You stole children.””

He smiled faintly.

“That is a dramatic way to describe a medical crisis.””

“Medical crisis?””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You always called it that.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Victoria.””

“You ruined Natalie’s life.””

“No.””

“She trusted you.””

“She was emotional.””

I felt anger rise.

“She was a mother.””

Adrian looked at me.

“And you are too.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“You have no idea what motherhood requires.””

I stepped closer.

“Actually, I do.””

I looked at Maya.

“And I know what monsters look like.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Just slightly.

A flicker of irritation.

Then it disappeared.

“Where is the second child?””

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked past me.

Toward Natalie.

“Where is she?””

I moved closer to the girl.

“She’s not going anywhere with you.””

Adrian sighed.

“You people always make this difficult.””

“People?””

“Families.””

I stared.

“You don’t see them as families.””

He looked at the girls.

“I see them as outcomes.””

The words made my stomach twist.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Adrian looked at his son.

“You were always weak.””

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

Marcus’s voice shook.

“But I finally know it.””

Adrian smiled.

“You think you know the truth.””

“I do.””

“No.””

He looked around the room.

“You know the version they gave you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But he only pulled out a small folder.

He tossed it onto the floor.

“Read it.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

I picked it up.

Inside were documents.

Not hospital records.

Court papers.

DNA reports.

Adoption files.

My hands shook as I read the first page.

*CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY PLACEMENT REVIEW*

Then I saw my name.

Claire Bennett.

I froze.

“What is this?””

Adrian smiled.

“The truth.””

I read further.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

Because my name wasn’t connected to Maya.

It was connected to something else.

A placement agreement.

A legal arrangement.

A child transfer.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire?””

I looked at him.

“Did you know?””

His face changed.

“Know what?””

I held up the paper.

“Was I chosen?””

Silence.

“What does that mean?”” Victoria asked.

I looked at Daniel.

“Was I chosen to raise her?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

My chest hurt.

Daniel whispered:

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

He looked broken.

“I didn’t know about the documents.””

“But you knew something.””

He looked down.

“I knew Adrian had arranged something.””

I closed my eyes.

Another lie.

Another secret.

Adrian watched all of us.

“You see?””

He said softly.

“No one here is innocent.””

I turned toward him.

“But you are the reason they had secrets.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

He didn’t deny it.

“I made decisions.””

“You stole children.””

“I protected them.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You controlled them.””

Adrian smiled.

“Control is simply protection with better results.””

I felt sick.

Natalie pressed against me.

Maya grabbed my hand.

I looked at those two little girls.

And suddenly I understood something.

Everyone had been fighting over who they belonged to.

Their mothers.

Their fathers.

Their families.

But nobody had asked what they needed.

I looked at Adrian.

“You don’t get to decide their lives.””

He stared at me.

“You already did.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You raised one.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

He pointed toward Maya.

“You think you found the wrong child.””

Nobody moved.

“But you didn’t.””

I stared.

“What?””

Adrian smiled.

“The DNA test was manipulated.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“What?””

Adrian looked at her.

“You really thought I would leave evidence behind?””

Marcus went pale.

“You changed the results.””

“Of course.””

My mind raced.

“But why?””

Adrian looked at the girls.

“Because I needed everyone looking in the wrong direction.””

I whispered:

“Then who are they?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Natalie.

“Tell them.””

The little girl shook.

“No.””

“Tell them what your mother told you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She said…”

I knelt beside her.

“It’s okay.””

She looked at me.

“She said there was never supposed to be a switch.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

The little girl continued.

“She said the babies were supposed to grow up together.””

My heart stopped.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

Fear.

For the first time.

“What else?””

Natalie looked at him.

“She said…”

She swallowed.

“She said the real secret wasn’t who the babies belonged to.””

The room went silent.

“It was who their father was.””

Everyone looked at Daniel.

His face went white.

“No.””

Natalie pointed at him.

“Mommy said Daddy wasn’t my real daddy.””

Daniel stumbled backward.

“What?””

Victoria covered her mouth.

Marcus stared.

I felt like the ground disappeared again.

Adrian smiled.

“Finally.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

I turned toward my husband.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

And I saw it.

The fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Claire…”

“Who is their father?””

He couldn’t speak.

Then the lights went out.

The room fell into darkness.

The sound of footsteps moved closer.

And Daniel whispered the name I never expected to hear.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

The emergency light flickered on.

Everyone’s faces appeared in the red glow.

Adrian.

Marcus.

Victoria.

Daniel.

The children.

And the truth I had spent four years searching for.

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

My voice barely came out.

“Tell me what?””

He looked at Maya and Natalie.

Then at Adrian.

“He wasn’t just the doctor.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was your father.””
