Chapter 7: The Girl Behind the Locked Door
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, the entire room forgot about the people waiting downstairs.
Forgot about the knocking.
Forgot about the police.
All I could hear was Maya’s voice repeating the same impossible sentence in my head.
*The other little girl.*
I knelt in front of her.
“Maya, look at Mommy.””
She did.
Her eyes were wet.
“She’s real?””
Maya nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
She looked toward the hidden room.
Then toward the wall.
Then back at me.
“I don’t know.””
My heart sank.
“Then how do you know about her?””
Maya squeezed my hand.
“Because she was scared.””
The room went cold.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Maya, what did she tell you?””
I turned sharply.
“Don’t question her like that.””
“I’m not trying to scare her.””
“She’s four.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You forgot she was a child when you made all these choices.””
Daniel looked away.
For once, he had nothing to say.
Marcus moved closer.
“Maya, can you tell us when you saw her?””
She looked at him carefully.
“Before.””
“Before what?””
“Before I lived here.””
Everyone went still.
Victoria whispered:
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know something.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
Her face broke.
“I know what Natalie told me.””
“What?””
“That she was afraid someone would find the second baby first.””
I stared.
“The second baby?””
Victoria nodded.
“Natalie believed there were two mistakes.””
Marcus frowned.
“Victoria…”
“She never believed the switch was accidental.””
Daniel looked alarmed.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria looked at him.
“I’m saying Natalie thought someone moved the babies on purpose.””
Silence.
The knock downstairs came again.
Harder.
“Claire Bennett, open the door.””
The sound reminded me that we were trapped.
But now there was something else.
A question.
A girl.
A child somewhere who looked like Maya.
I looked at Marcus.
“Where would she be?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“You worked on the records.””
“Yes.””
“You know the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“Then think.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The room was silent while he searched through memories.
Then he opened them.
“The fourth floor.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What about it?”” I asked.
“The old pediatric wing.””
“But you said it was closed.””
“It was.””
“Then?””
Marcus looked at the hidden room.
“Not completely.””
A chill ran through me.
“What does that mean?””
“There were private rooms.””
“For what?””
Marcus hesitated.
“For children who needed to be hidden.””
My stomach turned.
“Hidden from who?””
He didn’t answer.
The front door shook.
Someone downstairs tried the handle.
I grabbed Maya.
“We need to leave.””
Daniel nodded.
“Through the back.””
Marcus shook his head.
“They’ll be watching the exits.””
“Then what?””
His eyes moved to the hidden passage.
“There’s another way.””
I stared.
“You knew about this?””
“No.””
“Then why are you looking at it like you do?””
Marcus stepped closer to the wall.
“Because this house was built over the old hospital property.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
The house I had lived in.
The walls where I had raised Maya.
The place I thought was safe.
It was connected to everything.
Marcus pushed the hidden panel wider.
Behind it was a narrow tunnel.
Cold air rushed out.
Maya immediately grabbed my hand.
“I don’t like it.””
I crouched.
“I know.””
“The girl was there.””
My heart stopped.
“In the tunnel?””
Maya shook her head.
“No.””
“Where?””
She pointed upward.
“Above.””
Everyone looked at the ceiling.
Above us.
The old fourth floor.
The impossible place.
The place that supposedly didn’t exist anymore.
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“Maya…”
She whispered:
“She said she was waiting.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Who said that?””
Maya looked at her.
“The girl.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“Describe her.””
Maya frowned.
“She had my hair.””
“What else?””
“She had a scar.””
My breath caught.
“Where?””
Maya touched the side of her neck.
“Here.””
Daniel went pale.
“Natalie’s baby had a mark.””
I turned.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“After she was born, the nurse noticed a small scar near her neck.””
My hands trembled.
“And Maya?””
He looked at her.
“Maya didn’t.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the bracelet.
Then at the hidden tunnel.
A thought came that terrified me.
What if Maya had not been the wrong child?
What if someone had intentionally given me the wrong child because the right one was still somewhere waiting?
The knocking downstairs stopped.
That was worse.
I looked toward the ceiling.
“Why is it quiet?””
Marcus’s face changed.
“They know we found something.””
“Who?””
Before he answered, a sound came from above.
A faint sound.
A child crying.
Everyone froze.
Not Maya.
Another child.
A little girl.
My entire body went cold.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
The crying came again.
Soft.
Weak.
Like someone trying not to be heard.
Maya looked up.
“She’s there.””
I moved toward the sound.
“No.””
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Claire.””
I pulled away.
“Don’t.””
“You don’t know what’s up there.””
“I know there’s a child.””
“You can’t just—”
“I can.””
My voice shook.
“But I will.””
I looked at Maya.
Then at Daniel.
Then at everyone.
“For four years, all of you protected secrets.””
I pointed upward.
“I’m protecting a child.””
Nobody stopped me.
We followed the sound.
There was an old staircase hidden behind a section of the tunnel.
The steps were covered in dust.
Unused.
Forgotten.
But the higher we climbed, the clearer the crying became.
Maya held my hand.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Is she my sister?””
I stopped.
I didn’t know how to answer.
So I told the truth.
“I don’t know.””
Maya looked up.
“But you’ll help her?””
I squeezed her hand.
“Yes.””
At the top of the stairs was a metal door.
Rust covered the edges.
A small window was cracked.
Inside was darkness.
Then the crying stopped.
I reached for the handle.
Locked.
Marcus searched the frame.
“There’s a key.””
“Where?””
He pointed.
A small metal box was attached to the wall.
Inside was a single key.
I picked it up.
My hand shook.
Because someone had left it there.
Recently.
Waiting.
I unlocked the door.
It opened slowly.
The room smelled like dust.
And medicine.
A small bed sat in the corner.
A blanket covered it.
There were drawings on the walls.
Children’s drawings.
A family.
A house.
Two little girls holding hands.
My eyes burned.
Then a tiny voice came from behind the bed.
“Are you Mommy?””
I stopped.
A little girl stepped out.
She looked exactly like Maya.
Same eyes.
Same curls.
Same small face.
But there was one difference.
A tiny scar on her neck.
Maya gasped.
“That’s her.””
The girl stared at me.
Her lower lip trembled.
“I waited.””
I couldn’t move.
The little girl looked at Maya.
Then back at me.
“Are you the lady who was supposed to find me?””
Tears filled my eyes.
I stepped forward slowly.
“What’s your name?””
She looked confused.
Like she hadn’t been asked that question in a very long time.
Then she whispered:
“Natalie.””
Behind me, Daniel made a broken sound.
Because at that moment, we all understood.
The missing child wasn’t missing anymore.
She had been here.
May you like
All along.
And someone had been hiding her in the one place nobody thought to look.
