Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Secret

The room felt smaller with every second.

The hidden space behind the bathroom wall, once just a forgotten corner of the house, had become a cage filled with every lie I had ever been told.

Maya clung to my waist.

Daniel stood frozen near the doorway.

Evelyn looked like she had seen a ghost.

And Marcus Vale was staring at the entrance like he already knew exactly who was waiting outside.

“Who is she?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

The footsteps moved closer.

Slow.

Confident.

Like the person outside knew we had nowhere to go.

The woman called again.

“Claire.””

My skin prickled.

“She knows my name.””

Marcus nodded.

“She knows everything.””

The doorknob to the bathroom turned.

I moved in front of Maya.

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You don’t know what she’s capable of.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re telling me that now?””

His face tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“Four years too late.””

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

She looked to be in her early fifties.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed.

Gray streaks in her dark hair.

She wasn’t carrying a weapon.

She didn’t need one.

The way everyone reacted to her was enough.

Her eyes moved across the room.

First to Marcus.

Then Evelyn.

Then Daniel.

Finally, they stopped on Maya.

And she smiled.

Not warmly.

Not lovingly.

Like someone looking at something that belonged to them.

“There she is.””

Maya buried her face against me.

I felt my anger rise.

“Who are you?””

The woman ignored me.

She took one step forward.

“My name is Victoria Reed.””

My heart stopped.

Reed.

Natalie.

The same last name.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Victoria…”

She looked at him.

“You always were terrible at keeping promises.””

Then she looked back at me.

“I’m Maya’s aunt.””

I tightened my grip on my daughter.

“You’re not taking her.””

Victoria smiled.

“That’s exactly what Claire would say.””

“How do you know me?””

“Because I’ve watched you.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

“For four years.””

My stomach turned.

“You’ve been watching us?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She tilted her head.

“To see if you loved her.””

I stared at her.

The words made no sense.

“You knew where she was?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I did something.””

“What?””

“I waited.””

I stepped forward.

“You waited while I raised her?””

“Yes.””

“While she called me Mommy?””

Victoria’s expression changed slightly.

“You did a good job.””

I hated that.

I hated that she said it almost like a compliment.

Like she had the right.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

“No,” Victoria said quietly.

“I don’t.””

For the first time, there was sadness in her voice.

Then it disappeared.

“But I do get to tell you the truth.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Victoria, stop.””

She ignored him.

“Claire, Maya was never supposed to be hidden from you.””

“Then why was she?””

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

Daniel looked away.

Again.

That was becoming the answer to every question.

I stepped toward him.

“Tell me.””

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

His jaw tightened.

“When the hospital records disappeared, I found out.””

“When?””

“A year after Maya was born.””

I felt sick.

“You knew for three years?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“That I would lose you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You chose yourself.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“You weren’t protecting me. You were protecting your life.””

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because he knew.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Daniel made a choice.””

She looked at Maya.

“And so did I.””

I turned toward her.

“What choice?””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“A choice to keep her alive.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Natalie didn’t die because of the fire.””

Marcus looked at her sharply.

“Victoria.””

But it was too late.

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Natalie was alive after the fire.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I remembered the photograph.

The woman standing by the hospital window.

Crying.

The letter.

She knows you switched the babies.

“She died four years ago,” I whispered.

Victoria’s eyes darkened.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

“Who told you?””

She looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

My breathing became shallow.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria said:

“She found out what they did.””

She pointed at Evelyn.

“She found out her daughter had been taken.””

My hand went to Maya’s back.

“And?””

“And she tried to expose them.””

“Who?””

Victoria looked at Marcus.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“Everyone involved.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel wasn’t involved.””

Victoria gave a sad smile.

“You still believe that.””

I looked at my husband.

“Daniel?””

He closed his eyes.

That was enough.

A horrible realization formed.

“Daniel knew Natalie.””

“Yes,” Victoria said.

“How?””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“She was my sister.””

I felt the floor disappear.

“What?””

Maya looked up.

“Daddy?””

Daniel’s face crumbled.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I stared at him.

“Your sister?””

“Natalie was my half-sister.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

Afraid.

Everyone was always afraid.

And I was the only person who had been living inside the lie.

“You let me believe she was a stranger.””

“I didn’t know how to explain.””

“You had four years.””

“I know.””

My eyes burned.

“So Maya is your niece.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And my daughter?””

His silence was devastating.

I looked at Maya.

My little girl.

The child I had carried.

The child I had raised.

The child who knew my voice better than anyone.

Victoria watched me.

“You see why this is complicated.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“It’s not complicated.””

Everyone looked at me.

“It’s cruel.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Maya tugged my sleeve.

“Mommy?””

I knelt.

“Yes, baby?””

She looked toward Victoria.

“Is she taking me?””

My heart broke.

I pulled her into my arms.

“No.””

Victoria watched us.

Something flickered across her face.

Regret.

Maybe.

But then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Victoria answered.

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But whatever they said made her go pale.

“No,” she whispered.

A pause.

Then:

“You’re sure?””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Where?””

Another pause.

Victoria ended the call.

Nobody moved.

“What happened?”” Evelyn asked.

Victoria slowly looked at me.

“The DNA results came back.””

My throat tightened.

“What DNA results?””

She held up her phone.

“The ones from the sample taken before the pit.””

My heart raced.

“Why would you test her?””

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked at Maya.

Then said:

“Because there was something wrong with the hospital records.””

I stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria’s voice dropped.

“It means we were all looking at the wrong child.””

The room went completely still.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Maya is not Natalie’s daughter.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

Marcus stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria shook her head.

“The DNA doesn’t match.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Four years.

Four years of secrets.

Four years of lies.

And now this?

Victoria looked at me.

“The child you’ve been raising…”

She paused.

“And the child everyone has been searching for…”

Maya squeezed my hand.

Victoria finished:

“They are not the same person.””

I stared at my daughter.

At the bracelet.

At the people around me.

And for the first time, I wondered if the little girl I loved had been hidden from the truth…

or if the truth had been hidden from all of us.

Then Maya whispered something.

Something so quiet only I heard it.

“Mommy…”

I leaned closer.

“What?””

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I remember another mommy.””
