Chapter 7: The Transfer Scheduled for Tomorrow
For several seconds, my father didn't move.
He stared at Brianna's phone as though the screen had just revealed something he couldn't possibly understand.
Then he reached for it.
“Let me see that.””
Brianna pulled the phone closer to her chest.
“Don't grab it!””
“Brianna, I need to see the notification.””
She handed it over reluctantly.
Dad read the screen.
The transfer was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. the following morning. The source account was the custodial account opened in my name. The destination was a personal account belonging to Vanessa Carter.
The amount was exactly $11,000.
Dad looked up.
“Did you know about this?””
Brianna shook her head.
“I saw the notification this morning. I thought it was some kind of routine transfer.””
“Why did the bank send it to you?””
“Because Mom added my phone number when she opened the account.””
Dad's face tightened.
“Why would she do that?””
“I don't know!””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
Brianna immediately moved behind Dad.
“No.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What did you say?””
“I said no.””
“Brianna, don't be ridiculous.””
“You told me that account was just for keeping track of Mia's money. You said nothing else was going to happen.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“Stop talking.””
Dad held up one hand.
“Let her finish.””
Brianna's eyes were already filling with tears.
“Mom said she was moving the last bit of money because the account was complicated. She said it would be easier to put everything in one place.””
Dad turned toward Vanessa.
“Your personal account?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“It was a temporary arrangement.””
“Why?””
“Because I was handling the finances!””
“That's not an explanation.””
She took a breath.
“Daniel, you're making this sound much worse than it is. The transfer hasn't even happened.””
“Because we caught it.””
“And you already contacted the bank. What's your point?””
“My point is that you scheduled another transfer from an account that doesn't belong to you.””
Vanessa looked at Brianna.
“You had no business showing him that notification.””
Brianna's face crumpled.
“You told me not to tell anyone about the account!””
“I told you not to interfere in adult matters.””
“You said Mia would never find out!””
The words exploded through the room.
I felt as though someone had punched me.
Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“Is that what you told her?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“Brianna is confused.””
“No, I'm not!”” Brianna shouted.
“You said we had to finish moving the money before graduation because Mia would start asking for statements!””
My father looked at me.
I couldn't speak.
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“This conversation is over.””
She headed toward the front door.
Dad stepped into her path.
“Not until we know whether that transfer can be stopped.””
“Move.””
“Call the bank with me.””
“I am not going to stand here while you interrogate me.””
“Then I'll have the bank investigate without your cooperation.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear behind her anger.
She looked at the envelope on the counter.
Then at Brianna.
Then at Dad.
Finally, she said, “You have no idea what you're doing.””
Dad picked up his phone.
“I'm beginning to.””
He called Mr. Lawson.
The attorney answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
“The secondary account has an outgoing transfer scheduled for tomorrow morning. Eleven thousand dollars. It's going into Vanessa's personal account.””
There was a brief silence.
“Has the transfer been approved?””
“Brianna received the notification. It shows as scheduled.””
“Do not touch the account. I'll contact the bank's fraud department and request an emergency hold. We need to preserve the transaction record.””
Dad paced toward the living room.
“Can they stop it?””
“They should be able to suspend it while reviewing the authorization, but I cannot guarantee anything until the bank confirms.””
“Do it.””
“I'll call you back.””
Dad ended the call.
I stood beside the kitchen island, unable to stop looking at Vanessa.
She had become strangely quiet.
“Why?”” I finally asked.
She turned toward me.
“Why what?””
“Why are you taking everything?””
She sighed.
“Mia, you don't understand the financial responsibilities your father and I have.””
“Then explain them.””
“It's complicated.””
“No, it isn't. My mother left money for my education. You took it.
You used it for Brianna. And now you're trying to move what's left into your own account.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””
I shook my head.
“Neither did my mother. But she still made sure I would have something when she was gone.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“Your mother left you a fantasy, Mia. She left you money and photographs and a father who can't say no to you. I was the one who had to make a real family work.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Stop blaming Elena.””
“I am not blaming her!””
“You've been doing it for years.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because you never stopped treating this house like a memorial to her!””
The room went silent.
Dad stared at his wife.
Then he said quietly, “You knew what I was bringing into this marriage.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I knew I was marrying a widower. I didn't know I'd spend the rest of my life competing with a woman who wasn't even alive.””
I looked down.
My mother's photographs.
Her earrings.
The dress I'd saved for.
Suddenly, all those missing things seemed connected.
Vanessa hadn't simply disliked me.
She had resented everything that reminded her my father had loved someone before her.
Dad took a slow breath.
“That doesn't explain the money.””
Vanessa looked away.
“No.””
And for the first time, she admitted it without offering an excuse.
At 6:15 p.m., Mr. Lawson called back.
The bank had placed a temporary hold on the scheduled transfer.
The $11,000 would remain in the account while the suspicious activity was reviewed.
Dad thanked him.
When he hung up, his shoulders finally relaxed.
But the relief didn't last.
“There's another issue,” he said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Richard says the bank has identified several transactions requiring additional review. We need to provide documentation showing that you never authorized them.””
“How?””
“He's arranging a forensic examination of the signatures.””
I nodded.
Then I glanced toward the staircase.
“Is Brianna going to get in trouble?””
Dad followed my gaze.
“She may have information we need.””
“But she didn't open the account.””
“No. But she received the notifications.””
Brianna had been standing quietly near the hallway.
She looked up.
“I want to show you something.””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Brianna, go upstairs.””
“No.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
“Excuse me?””
Brianna took a breath.
“I have messages.””
My father put down his phone.
“What messages?””
“Between me and Mom.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“Give me your phone.””
Brianna backed away.
“No!””
“Brianna, I am your mother.””
“And I'm tired of you making me lie!””
The words came out so loudly that I flinched.
Brianna unlocked her phone.
She opened a messaging conversation and handed it to Dad.
There were dozens of messages between her and Vanessa.
Most concerned ordinary things: shopping, school, plans for the weekend.
But then I saw the conversation from eleven months earlier.
The day Brianna's car had been purchased.
Vanessa had written:
The money is coming from Mia's education account. Don't mention it to Daniel. He thinks we're using the savings.
Brianna had replied:
Isn't that her college money?
Vanessa's answer was immediate.
It's family money. Your father agreed.
Brianna had responded with a simple heart emoji.
A few days later, Vanessa had sent another message.
When Mia gets older, she'll start asking about the account. We need everything moved before then.
Brianna replied:
What if she finds out?
Vanessa:
She won't. She has never questioned anything I've told her.
I couldn't breathe.
Dad scrolled farther.
Another message appeared.
Don't worry about the remaining balance. I'll transfer it into my account before graduation.
Brianna had asked:
What about the paperwork?
Vanessa:
Daniel already signed what I needed. And Mia's signature is on the consent form.
Dad put the phone down.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What's the consent form?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Dad looked back at the messages.
Then he noticed the date.
It was two days before the beneficiary consent document had supposedly been signed.
“Brianna,” he asked, “did your mother ever ask you to sign anything?””
Brianna shook her head.
“Not for Mia's account.””
“Did you see her preparing any documents?””
“I saw papers on her desk once. She said she was organizing stuff.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's enough. You're using private family messages to make me look like a criminal.””
Brianna wiped her cheeks.
“I didn't make you write them.””
Vanessa slapped her hand against the counter.
“You ungrateful little girl!””
Brianna jumped.
Dad immediately stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her that way.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're choosing them over me.””
“No,” he replied.
“You made your choices a long time ago.””
She backed away.
Then she looked directly at me.
“You think you've won something?””
I didn't answer.
She pointed toward the stairs.
“Enjoy this little victory, Mia. You won't like what happens when everything comes out.””
She walked upstairs.
A moment later, the front bedroom door slammed.
Brianna sank into a chair.
Dad sat beside her.
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””
She stared at her hands.
“Because I knew she'd be angry.””
“Brianna…”
“And because I liked the things she bought me.””
Her voice cracked.
“I knew something wasn't right. But I didn't want to think about it.””
I looked at her.
For the first time, my stepsister didn't seem glamorous or untouchable.
She looked like a frightened teenager who had spent too long pretending she didn't know where her privileges came from.
Still, I wasn't ready to forgive her.
She had stood beside the fire and smiled while my dress burned.
That hadn't been an accident.
Dad gently took her phone.
“I'm going to send these messages to Richard. He'll tell us what to do next.””
Brianna nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Mia?””
I turned.
“I'm sorry.””
I swallowed.
“I'm glad you told the truth.””
Her eyes filled again.
“But I'm not ready to forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
I walked toward the stairs.
Behind me, Dad spoke softly.
“Tomorrow, we're going to find out exactly what happened to your mother's money.””
I reached the first step.
Then Brianna said something that stopped me.
“There's one more thing.””
I turned.
She looked frightened.
“Mom has another folder. It's not at the bank. It's in the locked drawer in her bedroom.””
Dad frowned.
“What folder?””
Brianna shook her head.
“I don't know everything in it. But I saw my name and Mia's name.””
She hesitated.
“And there was a picture of your mother.””
My heart began pounding.
“What picture?””
May you like
Brianna looked straight at me.
“The one Mom tore up after the funeral.””
