Chapter 9: The Document in the Wall

Tuesday morning arrived with a cold wind and a sky the color of steel.

At eight o'clock, Beatrix and I were seated in her conference room, reviewing the evidence before the Mercer Holdings board meeting.

The donor consent form was now the center of everything.

If Roland had forged my signature on that document, he could argue that I had known about the arrangement from the beginning.

Worse, he could claim that my participation in the medical payments had been deliberate.

Beatrix had already contacted the independent investigator handling the corporate review.

"We need to get ahead of this," she said.

"Can the board suspend the report?""

"They can request an independent examination of the allegations. But Roland is controlling the agenda.""

"He's also controlling the witnesses.""

"Which is why we need Thomas.""

I glanced at my phone.

Thomas Vane had not responded to my last message.

Alistair had gone silent too.

Camille was still missing.

And Vivian had sent one final email overnight:

Roland is not planning to attend the meeting alone. He has someone prepared to confirm the original authorization. Be careful.

I looked at Beatrix.

"Who?""

"She didn't say.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Everyone in that family seems to have a secret.""

Beatrix closed her folder.

"Then let's concentrate on the people who have something to prove.""

At 9:30, we arrived at Mercer Holdings headquarters.

The lobby was crowded.

Employees moved between elevators carrying coffee cups and laptops. A receptionist recognized me and immediately looked uncomfortable.

"Good morning, Ms. Mercer.""

"Morning, Claire.""

She hesitated.

"Mr. Mercer is expecting you.""

"How thoughtful.""

I walked toward the elevators.

The boardroom was on the nineteenth floor.

When we entered, nearly everyone was already seated.

Roland sat at the head of the table.

He wore a charcoal suit and a dark blue tie. His hair was neatly combed, and his expression was composed.

Beside him sat Camille.

She wore a cream dress and had both hands resting on her stomach.

Across from them was Thomas Vane.

He looked exhausted.

Alistair sat at the far end of the table, staring at his phone.

Vivian was not there.

Roland stood when he saw me.

"Evelyn. Thank you for coming.""

I pulled out a chair.

"I was invited.""

He glanced at Beatrix.

"This meeting is restricted to board members and relevant parties.""

Beatrix placed a document on the table.

"I'm representing Ms. Mercer regarding the allegations contained in the proposed accountability report.""

Roland smiled.

"Of course you are.""

A man in a dark suit cleared his throat.

He introduced himself as the board chairman, Arthur Bennett.

"Let's begin. Mr. Mercer, you requested this extraordinary meeting.""

Roland nodded.

"Yes. As some of you know, the company has discovered serious irregularities involving former contractor Evelyn Mercer.""

I looked at him.

"That's an interesting way to introduce yourself.""

He ignored me.

"We have identified more than two million dollars in unauthorized transactions. The records show that Ms. Mercer used her professional credentials to approve payments to Morrow Clinical Services.""

Thomas stared at the table.

Roland continued.

"These payments were disguised as legitimate medical expenses and routed through a subsidiary controlled by my brother.""

Alistair finally looked up.

"That's not what happened.""

Roland turned toward him.

"Please don't interrupt.""

Arthur raised a hand.

"Let him speak.""

Alistair shifted in his seat.

"Roland authorized those payments. I didn't approve anything under Evelyn's name.""

Roland gave a thin smile.

"That's a serious claim.""

"Then show them the emails.""

The room became quiet.

Roland's expression hardened.

"What emails?""

"The ones where you told Thomas to use Evelyn's authorization.""

I looked at Thomas.

He still hadn't spoken.

Roland leaned back.

"My brother has been under considerable emotional strain. I suggest we stick to verifiable facts.""

"Wonderful," I said.

"I brought some.""

Beatrix opened her folder.

"Before we review the company's allegations, we would like to introduce evidence concerning the origin of the disputed authorizations.""

Roland laughed.

"Evidence prepared by the person accused of the misconduct.""

"Independent records," Beatrix replied.

She placed photographs of the green ledger on the screen.

The board members began reading.

The notation was visible.

Use EM credential. Signature to follow.

Then another entry.

If Evelyn challenges the settlement, transfer responsibility to her authorization record.

Arthur leaned forward.

"Mr. Mercer, can you explain these entries?""

Roland adjusted his tie.

"Those are internal notes. They don't establish wrongdoing.""

"Whose handwriting is that?"" another director asked.

Roland said nothing.

Thomas suddenly spoke.

"His.""

Every head turned.

Roland stared at him.

"Thomas.""

The finance director lifted his eyes.

"Those are Mr. Mercer's instructions. I entered the transactions because he told me to.""

Roland's voice sharpened.

"You approved them.""

"I did.""

"Then this is your responsibility.""

Thomas swallowed.

"I know. But I didn't create the arrangement.""

He removed a folder from his briefcase.

Inside were printed emails.

"I saved the correspondence. Every instruction came from Roland's account.""

Beatrix took the folder.

"These appear to be the same transactions we identified.""

Thomas nodded.

"There's more.""

He turned to the board.

"Mr. Mercer asked me to prepare a replacement authorization bearing Evelyn's signature. He supplied the signature image.""

Roland stood.

"That's a lie.""

Thomas didn't look at him.

"I have the email.""

Arthur raised his voice.

"Sit down, Roland.""

For the first time, my ex-husband seemed uncertain.

Thomas continued.

"I also know the original donor consent form was never signed by Evelyn.""

A murmur moved around the table.

Roland's face went red.

"That document is confidential medical material.""

"Then why did you submit it as evidence against her?"" Beatrix asked.

Silence.

I watched Camille.

She had stopped touching her stomach.

Her fingers were gripping the edge of her chair.

"Camille?"" I said.

She looked at me.

"Did you sign the report accusing me?""

Roland turned sharply.

"Don't answer that.""

I kept my eyes on her.

"Did you?""

Her lips trembled.

Then she nodded.

"Yes.""

The room fell silent.

"Did you know my signature was forged?""

Camille looked at Roland.

He gave her a warning stare.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

Roland slammed his palm against the table.

"That's enough!""

Arthur raised his voice.

"Mr. Mercer, you will sit down.""

Camille began crying.

"He told me it was the only way to protect the baby.""

I looked at her.

"Protect the baby from what?""

She swallowed.

"From losing the trust.""

"What trust?""

Roland stepped toward her.

"Camille, stop talking.""

But she was no longer looking at him.

She was looking at me.

"He promised me the five million dollars. He said the money would belong to the baby once everything was settled. He told me that if you were blamed for the payments, nobody would question where the money came from.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"Did you believe him?""

"I wanted to.""

"That wasn't my question.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I leaned forward.

"Then why did you do it?""

Her voice broke.

"Because he told me if I didn't cooperate, he would take the baby away from me.""

Nobody spoke.

Even Roland seemed surprised.

Camille continued.

"He said he had the money, the lawyers, and the company. He said I would never be able to fight him.""

Beatrix asked, "Did he also tell you that Alistair would have no parental involvement?""

Camille nodded.

"He said Alistair would sign everything over.""

Alistair stood.

"I never agreed to that.""

Roland turned on him.

"You signed the trust papers.""

"Preliminary papers. Not the final agreement.""

"You knew what we were doing.""

"I knew what you told me we were doing.""

His voice cracked.

"I didn't know you were going to use the baby to steal my shares.""

Arthur looked toward Beatrix.

"What's this about shares?""

Beatrix placed another document on the table.

"The proposed trust agreement contains provisions that would transfer voting rights associated with Alistair Mercer's shares to Mr. Roland Mercer, who would act as trustee for the child.""

The board chairman read the document.

His expression changed.

"This would effectively consolidate control of the company.""

"Yes," Beatrix said.

Roland laughed bitterly.

"That was a proposed family arrangement. It has nothing to do with this meeting.""

"It has everything to do with it," Alistair replied.

"You wanted my child so you could control my shares.""

Roland turned toward him.

"Your child?""

The question hung in the air.

Then Roland said something I never expected.

"You don't even know what Camille agreed to.""

Camille's face went white.

"What are you talking about?""

Roland looked around the table.

"You all think this is about a pregnancy and a few financial transactions. It isn't.""

Beatrix stood.

"Then explain it.""

Roland adjusted his cuffs.

"The Mercer family trust is being restructured. There are substantial assets involved. Alistair's shares are only part of it.""

Vivian's voice suddenly came from the doorway.

"And you intended to use the unborn child as the beneficiary while keeping control of everything yourself.""

Everyone turned.

Vivian walked into the room carrying a thick folder.

She placed it on the table.

"I've had enough.""

Roland stared at his mother.

"Go home.""

"No.""

"Mother.""

"You've spent your entire life believing that people exist to serve you.""

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the family trust documents, the draft transfer agreement, and several handwritten instructions.

"You told me the arrangement was temporary. You told me you wanted to protect the family. But this was never about protecting anyone.""

Roland looked furious.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Vivian turned toward Arthur.

"I am prepared to provide a complete statement. I also have an audio recording of Roland and Camille discussing the forged report.""

Beatrix nodded.

"We have already preserved a copy.""

Roland's face changed.

"You stole that?""

"I protected it," Vivian replied.

Arthur closed the trust agreement.

"We are suspending this meeting pending independent review.""

Roland stood.

"You cannot do that.""

"We can, and we are.""

The board members began gathering their documents.

I remained seated.

I had come to defend myself.

But now I was watching the entire structure of Roland's carefully managed empire begin to crack.

He leaned toward me.

"You think you've won?""

I looked at him.

"I think you've finally run out of people willing to lie for you.""

He lowered his voice.

"You don't know what happened to the original document.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What document?""

He smiled.

"The donor consent form.""

Beatrix immediately turned.

"Where is it?""

Roland looked at Camille.

She stared back at him in horror.

Then he said, "It's already been filed.""

Arthur stood.

"Filed where?""

Roland slowly picked up his briefcase.

"In the court records.""

My blood ran cold.

Beatrix stepped forward.

"What?""

Roland smiled.

"Your ex-wife's signature is now part of an official submission.""

He looked directly at me.

"And I made sure the document was filed before today's meeting.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I glanced at Beatrix.

She was already reaching for her phone.

Roland walked toward the door.

Then he paused.

"One last thing, Evelyn.""

I looked up.

"That document doesn't just say you knew about the pregnancy.""

May you like

He smiled.

"It says you agreed to be financially responsible for the child.""
