Chapter 3: A House Full of Liars

By Saturday morning, the rain had stopped.

The Mercer estate stood at the end of a long private driveway, surrounded by manicured lawns and white stone fountains. It was the kind of property that looked expensive even from a distance.

I had once called it home.

Now, as the driver stopped near the entrance, I found myself studying the house as if I had never seen it before.

White roses lined the front steps. Pink balloons floated beneath the covered entrance. A large wooden sign displayed the baby's name:

*LITTLE MERCER, BIG LOVE.*

Below it was a photograph of Camille and Roland.

She was wearing a flowing ivory dress, one hand resting on her stomach. Roland stood behind her with his arms around her waist.

They looked perfect.

That was the point.

I stepped out of the car carrying the black gift box and a larger cream-colored bag. I had chosen a simple navy dress and matching heels.

No dramatic jewelry.

No bright colors.

No reason for anyone to accuse me of trying to steal attention.

The front door opened before I reached the steps.

A woman in a pale pink dress appeared.

"Well, look who decided to come.""

Roland's mother.

Vivian Mercer.

She had never liked me. During the marriage, she had treated my professional success as an inconvenience and my inability to conceive as a personal insult.

I gave her a polite smile.

"Hello, Vivian.""

She looked at my gift bags.

"How generous.""

"Congratulations on the baby.""

"Thank you. Camille has been very blessed.""

She stepped aside.

Then she leaned closer.

"I hope you understand that this is a family celebration.""

"I do.""

"And I hope you're not going to make things awkward for her.""

I held her gaze.

"I came because she invited me.""

Vivian smiled.

"Well, let's hope you've learned to let go.""

I walked inside.

The entrance hall smelled of fresh flowers and vanilla candles. A large arrangement of pink roses covered the table where wedding photographs of Roland and Camille had been placed.

There were no photographs of Roland and me.

Of course not.

The living room had been transformed into a baby shower venue. White curtains framed the windows, a dessert table covered one wall, and a large arch of pink and white balloons stood behind the gift area.

Women sat in small groups, talking over champagne and sparkling cider.

Some were old friends.

Others were business acquaintances.

A few had clearly been invited because they could make the event look impressive in photographs.

The moment I entered, several conversations became quieter.

I heard my name.

Then a whisper.

Then a cough.

I continued walking.

Camille appeared near the staircase.

She looked beautiful.

Her blonde hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders. Her ivory dress was fitted around her pregnant stomach, and a delicate diamond necklace rested against her collarbone.

She noticed me immediately.

For half a second, surprise crossed her face.

Then she smiled.

"Evelyn!""

She hurried toward me, one hand holding her stomach.

"I can't believe you actually came.""

"You invited me.""

Camille laughed and leaned in to hug me.

Her perfume was the same scent that had covered the invitation.

She held the embrace a little too long.

"I wasn't sure you would feel comfortable.""

"I wouldn't miss it.""

Her smile widened.

"That's so sweet.""

She stepped back and glanced at my gift bags.

"Did you bring something?""

I held them out.

"Of course.""

She accepted the larger bag.

Then her eyes settled on the small black box.

"What's this?""

"A little something for the baby.""

She turned it over in her hands.

The pink ribbon caught the light.

"It's beautiful.""

"Thank you.""

Camille looked at me with an expression I recognized.

It was the look she used when she wanted to appear kind while waiting for someone else to feel small.

"Roland always said you had a difficult time choosing gifts.""

I smiled.

"People change.""

Her smile faltered.

"Well, I hope you enjoy yourself. We're going to have a little toast later, and then the games.""

"I'll look forward to it.""

Camille placed the black box on the gift table.

"Make yourself comfortable.""

I walked away.

A familiar voice called from behind me.

"Evelyn?""

I turned.

It was Margaret Lewis, one of my former friends from the country club.

She approached with a glass in her hand.

"I haven't seen you in ages.""

"Neither have I.""

Margaret glanced toward Camille.

"She seems very happy.""

"She does.""

"Are you all right being here?""

I smiled.

"Why wouldn't I be?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Well, you know how people talk.""

"I've heard.""

She looked uncomfortable.

"I never really believed everything they said about your marriage.""

"Which part?""

Margaret hesitated.

"That you and Roland had grown apart because you couldn't give him children.""

I looked at her.

"People said that?""

Her face changed.

"Oh, Evelyn. I thought you knew.""

I did.

I knew exactly what Roland had told people.

He had turned our private fertility struggles into a public explanation for his affair.

I took a sip of water.

"Then you should be glad I came today.""

Margaret frowned.

"Why?""

"Because you can stop wondering.""

Before she could respond, a woman approached us.

Camille's mother.

Diana.

She was carrying a plate of tiny pink cupcakes.

"Evelyn, darling," she said, smiling.

"You look lovely.""

"Thank you.""

Diana tilted her head.

"You're being very brave.""

I almost choked on my water.

"Am I?""

"Of course. Not everyone could attend a celebration like this after everything you've been through.""

I looked at her carefully.

"Everything I've been through?""

She touched my arm.

"Well, the divorce. The fertility problems. Seeing your former husband begin a new family.""

I set my glass down.

"That's a lot of things to discuss in front of cupcakes.""

Her smile became tight.

"Forgive me. I was only trying to be supportive.""

"Then thank you.""

I walked away before she could respond.

For the next twenty minutes, I stayed near the windows and watched the room.

The guests were arriving in waves.

Camille greeted everyone with practiced enthusiasm. Roland moved between groups, shaking hands and accepting congratulations.

He saw me eventually.

His expression hardened.

Then he came over.

"Evelyn.""

"Roland.""

He looked around before lowering his voice.

"What are you doing?""

"Standing.""

"Don't be clever.""

"I was invited.""

He glanced toward the gift table.

"Camille didn't mean for you to take this as some kind of opportunity.""

"What opportunity?""

"To make a scene.""

I looked at him.

"Did I bring a microphone?""

He frowned.

"You're still doing this.""

"Doing what?""

"Making everything difficult.""

I smiled.

"Interesting. That's exactly what you said when I asked why you were spending so much time with Camille.""

His jaw tightened.

"Not here.""

"Agreed.""

He moved closer.

"Listen carefully. Today is about the baby. Not the divorce.

Not the past. Not you.""

I nodded.

"Understood.""

"Good.""

He started to walk away.

Then I said, "How is your brother?""

Roland stopped.

His shoulders became rigid.

"What?""

"Alistair. I asked how he's doing.""

He turned slowly.

"Why are you asking about him?""

"No reason.""

"Stay away from him.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"That's an unusual request.""

Roland looked at me for a moment.

Then he leaned closer.

"Whatever you're planning, don't.""

Before I could answer, Camille called from across the room.

"Roland! Come here, sweetheart!""

He immediately straightened.

His public smile returned.

"Enjoy the party," he muttered.

Then he walked away.

I watched him join Camille near the balloon arch.

She kissed his cheek and whispered something into his ear. He looked toward me again.

Whatever she said, it made him even more uncomfortable.

A little after three, the guests gathered near the front of the living room.

The host announced that it was time for the first toast.

I stayed near the back, holding my glass.

Camille stood beside Roland.

One hand rested on her stomach.

"Thank you all for coming," she began.

"This means so much to us.""

Her voice trembled slightly.

"Some people come into your life at exactly the right moment. Roland has been my greatest blessing. He has shown me what it means to be loved, protected, and cherished.""

Several women nodded.

I looked at Roland.

He smiled.

Camille continued.

"And after everything we've been through, this little baby is proof that life always gives you another chance.""

Her gaze moved toward me.

Just for a second.

Then she looked away.

I raised my glass.

"To second chances," I said quietly.

Camille heard me.

Her smile tightened.

"Absolutely," she replied.

The guests clinked their glasses.

Then Camille turned toward the gift table.

"Now, before we start the games, I want to open a few special gifts.""

She picked up the first package.

A silver baby bracelet.

Then a handmade blanket.

Then a large box from Vivian.

She laughed and hugged Roland's mother.

Finally, her eyes landed on my black box.

"Oh!"" she exclaimed.

"This one is from Evelyn.""

Several people turned.

Camille held it up.

"She brought something very special.""

I didn't move.

She touched the ribbon.

"It's so pretty. I almost don't want to open it.""

"There's a card," I said.

She found the little envelope attached to the bow.

Her eyes moved across the front.

Then she read the message aloud.

"Open after the first toast.""

A few guests laughed.

"Well, we've had our toast," Vivian said.

"Go ahead, darling.""

Camille glanced at me.

I smiled.

"Whenever you're ready.""

She carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.

Inside was the velvet pouch.

She reached for it.

Then she pulled out the small silver key.

Her eyebrows drew together.

"A key?""

"Yes.""

"What does it open?""

"Something important.""

She laughed, but the sound was strained.

"You're being mysterious.""

"Only a little.""

Camille turned toward the guests.

"Should I be worried?""

Someone laughed.

Then she reached for the card hidden beneath the velvet lining.

I watched as she unfolded it.

Her smile disappeared.

The card contained a second message.

For the woman who believes every secret stays buried.

The key opens Cabinet 314 at the Mercer Records Annex.

Inside is the original agreement, the payment history, and the authorization you never knew existed.

Keep it. You may need it.

Evelyn.

Camille's fingers began to tremble.

I saw it.

So did Roland.

He stepped forward.

"What is that?""

Camille tried to fold the card.

"Nothing.""

"Let me see.""

"It's nothing, Roland.""

But he had already reached for it.

Their hands met over the little black box.

The room fell silent.

I took one step forward.

"There's no need to fight over it.""

Roland's eyes locked onto mine.

"What did you do?""

I looked at the guests.

Then at Camille.

"I brought a gift.""

"You know exactly what I mean.""

"Then perhaps you should ask your brother.""

The room shifted.

Camille's face went pale.

Roland stared at me.

"Leave my brother out of this.""

"I didn't bring him into it.""

I glanced at the silver key.

"Your company did.""

Vivian stepped between us.

"Enough! This is a baby shower!""

"You're right," I said calmly.

"It is.""

I turned toward Camille.

"Congratulations.""

She looked as though she might faint.

Roland grabbed my wrist.

"You're leaving.""

I looked down at his hand.

"Let go.""

"Evelyn—"

"Now.""

He released me.

I picked up my glass from the table and set it down carefully.

Then I walked toward the door.

Behind me, I heard Camille whisper something.

I couldn't make out the words.

But I heard Roland answer.

"Not here.""

The same words he had used on me.

As I reached the entrance hall, someone called my name.

I turned.

Alistair stood near the staircase.

His tie was loose, and his face looked gray.

I had not seen him arrive.

He glanced toward the living room, then back at me.

"Evelyn, wait.""

I stopped.

"What do you want?""

He moved closer.

"You need to know something before you open that cabinet.""

I held his gaze.

"Go on.""

He swallowed.

"The original records won't just prove the money was transferred. They'll prove why it was transferred.""

"Why?""

He looked toward Roland.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said:

"Because Camille wasn't supposed to have Roland's baby. She was supposed to have mine.""

I didn't move.

Alistair continued.

"And Roland knew that before they got engaged.""

Before I could ask another question, a crash came from the living room.

Glass shattered.

Someone screamed.

Then Roland's voice thundered through the house.

"GET THAT BOX AWAY FROM HER!""

Alistair closed his eyes.

I turned toward the noise.

Because I suddenly understood something.

The black box wasn't the real danger.

May you like

The real danger was what the silver key could unlock.

And somewhere inside the Mercer estate, Roland had just realized that I was no longer the only person who knew his secret.
