Chapter 8: The Woman Who Saw the Last Night
The woman standing at the chapel entrance looked nothing like someone arriving at a wedding.
She wasn’t dressed for celebration.
No flowers.
No bright smile.
No excitement.
She wore a simple dark coat, and her face carried the kind of exhaustion that comes from holding onto a secret for too long.
But it was the way Rebecca reacted that made my heart start racing.
Rebecca whispered her name like she had seen someone return from the dead.
“Laura.””
The woman’s eyes moved toward her.
“Yes.””
Rebecca took a step back.
“How did you find me?””
Laura didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at me.
“Are you Michael Carter?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Her expression softened.
“I’m sorry I’m late.””
Those four words made my stomach tighten.
Late for what?
The wedding?
The truth?
Saving us?
I looked around.
Two hundred guests were still waiting inside the chapel.
My daughter was standing beside me.
My best friend was hiding secrets.
My almost-wife had lied about her identity.
And now a stranger had arrived claiming she knew what happened to my dead wife.
“No more surprises,” I said.
My voice was calm.
But everyone could hear the anger underneath.
“I’m done with people walking into my life with pieces of information they refuse to share.””
Laura nodded.
“You have every right to feel that way.””
“Then start talking.””
Rebecca looked nervous.
“Michael, don’t listen to her.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“She doesn’t know everything.””
Laura looked at Rebecca.
“I know enough.””
The two women stared at each other.
And I realized something.
This wasn’t the first time they had stood face-to-face.
“What happened between you two?””
Laura looked at Rebecca.
Then at me.
“I was Claire’s closest friend.””
The words hit me.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another person who knew my wife better than I realized.
“You knew Claire?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“We worked together.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“That was years ago.””
Laura ignored her.
“Claire trusted me.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then why have I never heard your name?””
Laura looked down.
“Because after Claire died, someone made sure I stayed quiet.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
She looked at Rebecca.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Before I answer that, I need to show you something.””
I almost laughed.
“No.””
She stopped.
“No?””
“No more envelopes. No more hidden letters. No more ‘I need to show you something.’”
I looked at everyone around me.
“I want words.””
Laura nodded.
“Okay.””
She took a breath.
“Claire didn’t die because of a random accident.””
Silence.
I had heard versions of this all day.
But hearing it from someone who knew Claire changed something.
“What happened?””
Laura looked at Emily.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Claire discovered that someone was using her name to move money.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“The insurance?””
“Yes.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
He looked down.
Laura noticed.
“You know about that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“Answer her.””
He sighed.
“Yes.””
Laura shook her head.
“I thought so.””
My anger rose again.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I found records after Claire died.””
“What records?””
“Transfers.””
“From where?””
He hesitated.
“From accounts connected to Thomas Whitmore’s company.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You knew.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I knew money was moving. I didn’t know why.””
Laura stepped closer.
“And Claire did.””
Everyone became silent.
“She discovered the connection before she died,” Laura continued.
“She found out Thomas Whitmore wasn’t working alone.””
My heart pounded.
“Who else?””
Laura looked at me.
“Someone close to you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I know you don’t want to hear that.””
“Because it’s not true.””
Laura’s expression was sad.
“Michael, your wife spent her final week terrified.””
The words broke through my anger.
Terrified.
I remembered Claire during those final days.
I remembered her being quieter than usual.
I remembered asking if something was wrong.
And she had smiled.
She had said:
“I’m just tired.””
I had believed her.
Because I wanted to.
“What did she tell you?”” I asked.
Laura’s eyes filled slightly.
“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Emily.””
I looked at my daughter.
Again.
Everything always came back to Emily.
“She knew someone wanted her gone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Laura looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Laura continued.
“Claire believed someone was trying to manipulate Michael into giving up control of the trust.””
My hands curled.
“The trust.””
The money.
The thing everyone kept circling around.
“So this was about money?””
Laura nodded.
“Partly.””
“Partly?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Emily.
“It was also about what Claire discovered.””
“What did she discover?””
Laura hesitated.
Then reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
My heart sank.
Not another hidden object.
Not another secret.
She placed it in my hand.
“Claire gave this to me two days before she died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Laura looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of the person who wanted it.””
The chapel doors moved behind us.
A few guests started whispering.
I ignored them.
“Why bring it now?””
Laura looked at Rebecca.
“Because she knows where it came from.””
I turned.
Rebecca looked away.
My chest tightened.
“Rebecca.””
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know what was on it.””
“But you knew about it.””
She didn’t answer.
“Rebecca.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
The confession was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
“You knew Claire had this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Claire told me.””
My eyes widened.
“You talked to Claire after she found out?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“Three days before she died.””
The same time.
The same period.
The same mystery.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Laura.
Then Rebecca.
Everyone had pieces.
Everyone except me.
“What did Claire say to you?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“She asked me to help her.””
The answer surprised me.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at Emily.
“Because she knew my father’s people might come after her.””
“Your father’s people?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you pretend to be someone else?””
Rebecca swallowed.
“Because I was afraid you would never trust me.””
I stared at her.
“You’re right.””
The words hurt her.
But I meant them.
“Not because of your father.””
I pointed at everything around us.
“Because of the lies.””
Rebecca looked down.
Laura stepped closer.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She glanced at Emily.
“Claire didn’t just leave evidence.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she leave?””
Laura’s voice became quieter.
“A message.””
“Where?””
Laura looked toward the chapel.
“In the one place she knew nobody would search.””
I frowned.
“Where?””
Laura looked at Emily’s white dress.
At the flowers in her hair.
Then she said:
“Inside the thing Emily was wearing today.””
I froze.
My eyes moved to my daughter.
“What?””
Emily looked confused.
Laura stepped forward carefully.
“Your mother put something there before she died.””
Rebecca suddenly spoke.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Her face had gone pale.
“No, she couldn’t have.””
Laura looked at her.
“She did.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
Rebecca looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was real.
“She knew you would marry someone else one day.””
My breathing stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca whispered:
“She left a message for the woman who would become your wife.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Laura added:
“And that message was never meant for Rebecca.””
A chill went through me.
“Then who was it meant for?””
Laura looked at Emily.
And Emily slowly reached up to touch the small pearl sewn into her dress.
Her face changed.
Because she remembered.
“Daddy…”
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I think I know where Mommy hid it.””
I knelt down.
“Where?””
Emily touched the pearl.
“The dress shop.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“Because Mommy came to see me there.””
I froze.
“Emily…”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Daddy, Mommy wasn’t alone.””
The world went silent.
“Who was with her?””
Emily looked past me.
Straight at Rebecca.
May you like
And whispered:
“The woman you were about to marry.””
