Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Too Much

For a moment, I thought I had heard her wrong.

The noise around us disappeared.

The guests.

The whispers.

The music still waiting inside the chapel.

Everything faded until there was only one sentence left in my mind.

Uncle Daniel.

I looked at my best friend.

Daniel stood frozen.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Frozen.

And that reaction told me more than any explanation could.

“Emily,” I said softly.

She looked up at me.

“Are you sure?””

Her lower lip trembled.

“Yes.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Michael, wait.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“No, you listen to me.””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

That made it worse.

“Did you talk to Rebecca about that box?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Michael, this is exactly why I didn’t want this happening here.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you’re jumping from one accusation to another without knowing the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The truth?””

I held up Claire’s letter.

“The truth is that my dead wife left me a letter warning me not to let anyone separate me from my daughter.””

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“And now you’re accusing me and Daniel because of something a child thinks she saw?””

I looked at Emily.

She flinched.

That was enough.

I turned back to Rebecca.

“Careful.””

Her eyebrows lowered.

“What?””

“Don’t call her a liar.””

“I didn’t.””

“You didn’t have to.””

Silence.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Michael, can we please talk away from everyone?””

“No.””

His eyes lifted.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked around.

His face was pale.

“Not in front of Emily.””

My chest tightened.

Because once again, someone wanted to move the conversation away from my daughter.

Once again, someone wanted to control what she heard.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Michael.””

“She stays.””

I put my hand on Emily’s shoulder.

“She has spent years being told things she wasn’t allowed to question.””

I stared at both of them.

“No more secrets around her.””

Rebecca looked angry.

“You’re really going to involve a seven-year-old in this?””

I looked at her.

“You already did.””

That silenced her.

Daniel looked down.

And for the first time in twenty years of friendship, I saw guilt on his face.

Not confusion.

Not hurt.

Guilt.

“How long?”” I asked.

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“How long have you known?””

His eyes moved away.

That was answer enough.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“Michael…”

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Since before the wedding.””

The words hit me.

Before the wedding.

Before today.

Before I was standing in that chapel waiting to promise my life to someone.

“You knew?””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

She looked back at him.

And the way they looked at each other made my stomach twist.

They weren’t strangers caught in a misunderstanding.

They were people who shared information.

Information they had kept from me.

“What did you know?”” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“I knew Rebecca was worried about Emily.””

I stared at him.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

The answer came quietly.

And somehow that was worse.

Daniel took a breath.

“I knew she had been looking into Emily’s past.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What?””

“Not her school records. Not medical records.””

He looked at Claire’s letter in my hand.

“Her mother.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Rebecca suddenly spoke.

“Because I was trying to understand this family.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were investigating.””

Her face hardened.

“I was trying to find answers.””

“About my wife?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at the letter.

“Because I found something.””

The courtyard became silent.

“What did you find?””

She didn’t answer.

I felt anger rising.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

“Do what?””

“Give me pieces of the truth and expect me to chase after the rest.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask Daniel why he never told you.””

I looked at Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

“What is she talking about?””

Daniel looked away.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“Know what?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped forward.

“Know what?””

Finally, he whispered:

“That Claire contacted me before she died.””

Everything stopped.

My body went numb.

“What?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You see?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, explain that sentence.””

He took a breath.

“Three days before the accident, Claire called me.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“She wanted to meet.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

The ground felt unsteady beneath me.

“You met with my wife three days before she died?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Then at the letter.

Then at Emily.

“From the truth.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Daniel.””

His voice dropped.

“Claire was scared.””

The words were barely audible.

But I heard them.

“Scared of what?””

He looked at Rebecca.

And this time, Rebecca didn’t look angry.

She looked afraid.

“She thought someone was trying to take Emily away from you.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Rebecca.

“Someone?””

Daniel nodded.

“She didn’t know who.””

“But you did?””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire made me promise.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She made me promise that if anything happened to her, I wouldn’t say anything until I was sure.””

My voice broke.

“Sure about what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That you were safe.””

The words made no sense.

Safe.

From what?

My wife had died.

My daughter was being sent away.

My fiancée was hiding letters.

My best friend had secrets.

And everyone kept acting like they were protecting me.

But nobody had asked me what I wanted.

“What did Claire say?”” I asked.

Daniel was silent.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Emily.

Then slowly said:

“She said Rebecca wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

I looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me Daniel met with Claire?””

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Because she couldn’t.

Daniel continued.

“Claire found something about Rebecca before she died.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

“She didn’t tell me everything.””

“Why?””

“Because she said she needed proof.””

I looked down at the letter.

The letter I had never known existed.

The letter hidden inside the box.

The box Rebecca searched.

“What proof?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“You’re all making a mistake.””

Nobody answered.

She looked directly at me.

“Michael, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Claire wasn’t perfect.””

The sentence felt wrong.

Like she was trying to change the subject.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Everything.””

Rebecca’s voice became stronger.

“You think she was protecting you. But she had secrets too.””

I stared at her.

“What secrets?””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

Then at me.

“She never told you the truth about the night she died.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

Rebecca took a breath.

“I’m saying your wife’s death was not as simple as you were told.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

Because whatever Rebecca had just said…

He knew it too.

I turned slowly toward my best friend.

“Did you know?””

Daniel looked away.

And that was the moment I realized the people closest to me had been carrying pieces of my life that I never got to hold.

“Daniel.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Yes.””

My heart broke.

“You knew my wife’s death wasn’t an accident?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I knew Claire was afraid something would happen.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Then at the letter.

Then at my daughter.

The little girl who had tried to warn me before anyone else.

And suddenly I understood.

The wedding had never been the beginning of a new family.

It had been the moment someone planned to erase the old one.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Who were you before you met me?””

For the first time, she had no answer.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked down.

The screen lit up.

One name appeared.

May you like

A name that made Rebecca’s face lose all color.

*Claire.*
