Chapter 6: The Call From a Dead Woman

Nobody moved.

Rebecca’s phone continued vibrating in her hand.

The name on the screen stayed there.

*Claire.*

My wife’s name.

A name that should have existed only in photographs, memories, and the quiet moments when Emily asked me what her mother was like.

Not on a phone screen.

Not on the day I was supposed to get married.

Not while Rebecca stood in front of me looking like she had just seen a ghost.

“Answer it,” I said.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Rebecca looked at me.

“What?””

“Answer the phone.””

Her fingers tightened around the device.

“It’s probably a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

The phone kept ringing.

“You’re telling me my dead wife’s name appearing on your phone is a mistake?””

Rebecca looked around.

The guests were watching.

Daniel looked frozen.

Emily was holding onto my jacket.

Nobody knew what to say.

Then the call stopped.

The screen went dark.

For one second, I thought it was over.

Then the phone rang again.

Same name.

*Claire.*

This time, Rebecca stepped backward.

A small movement.

But everyone saw it.

“You’re afraid,” I said.

She looked at me.

“No.””

“Yes, you are.””

“I’m shocked.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

I reached out my hand.

“Give me the phone.””

Rebecca immediately pulled it away.

“No.””

That one word told me everything.

Not because she refused.

Because she refused too quickly.

“Why not?””

“Because this is private.””

I stared at her.

“Private?””

I looked around at the chapel.

“At my wedding?””

Her face tightened.

“You’re twisting this.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked down at the phone.

The ringing stopped again.

Silence returned.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“What?””

His expression was serious.

“You need to know something.””

I already hated those words.

Because every time someone said them today, my entire world changed.

“What now?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Claire’s number was never disconnected.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She kept it active.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You were her friend too.””

“I told you. She didn’t tell me everything.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Then how does Rebecca have access to it?””

Nobody answered.

And that was the answer.

Rebecca knew.

She knew something about Claire.

Something she had hidden from me.

I stepped toward her.

“Give me the phone.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Rebecca.””

“You need to calm down.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Calm down?””

“Yes.””

“You keep saying that like I’m the problem.””

Her expression changed.

“I’m trying to prevent you from making a decision you’ll regret.””

“What decision?””

She looked at Emily.

“That.””

I followed her eyes.

My daughter.

Standing beside me.

Terrified.

The anger I felt was so sharp it almost became calm.

“You still think this is about Emily.””

Rebecca sighed.

“Michael, you don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked at the phone.

Then at me.

Finally, she answered.

The entire courtyard went silent.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Rebecca’s face changed.

At first, confusion.

Then fear.

Then something I couldn’t identify.

She turned slightly away.

“Who is this?””

My heart started pounding.

Because I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.

But Rebecca could.

And whatever she heard was enough to drain the color from her face.

“Where did you get this number?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Rebecca ignored me.

“I thought you were gone.””

The words hit me.

Not because of what they meant.

Because of how she said them.

Not:

“I’m sorry.””

Not:

“Who are you?””

She said:

“I thought you were gone.””

Like she knew exactly who was calling.

I reached for the phone.

Rebecca turned away.

“Rebecca.””

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the woman from two years ago.

The woman who laughed with me.

The woman who held my hand when I was struggling.

Then she looked back at the phone.

And whatever remained of that person disappeared.

“I can’t do this right now.””

She ended the call.

I stared at her.

“You just hung up on Claire.””

She didn’t respond.

“You knew who it was.””

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what’s happening.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can’t.””

The answer shocked me.

Not because she couldn’t.

Because she admitted it.

She actually admitted there was something she wasn’t telling me.

I took a step back.

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at Emily.

And again, she made the mistake of looking at my daughter like she was the reason everything was falling apart.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control it.””

She looked hurt.

But I couldn’t tell if it was real.

Daniel walked closer.

“Rebecca.””

She looked at him.

“You need to tell him.””

Her face changed.

“Don’t.””

“Enough.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

For the first time, he wasn’t protecting her.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was protecting the truth.

Rebecca stared at him.

“You promised.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What did you promise?””

Daniel looked away.

Nothing.

But that one word.

Promise.

It opened another door.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“I promised Claire.””

The courtyard went silent again.

“Promised her what?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Don’t.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I promised Claire I would make sure Emily stayed with you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Rebecca.

“It means Claire was afraid someone would try to take her.””

My eyes moved to Rebecca.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Rebecca did.

“Michael, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more.””

I pointed toward the phone in her hand.

“The call. The letter. The box. The school.””

My breathing became heavier.

“All of it.””

Rebecca looked desperate now.

Not angry.

Desperate.

“You think I’m your enemy.””

“I think I don’t know you.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

For the first time, something real appeared on her face.

But I couldn’t let it change anything.

Not anymore.

“I loved you,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“I know.””

“And you believe I would hurt Emily?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the hardest truths are the ones you don’t want to say.

Finally, I said:

“I believe you already did.””

Her eyes filled.

But before she could respond, Emily spoke.

Quietly.

“Daddy.””

I turned.

“What?””

She pointed at Rebecca’s phone.

“There’s another message.””

Rebecca looked down.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Emily stepped back.

“She didn’t call.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Emily swallowed.

“She sent something.””

Rebecca stared at the phone.

Slowly, she unlocked it.

There was a new message.

One sentence.

From Claire’s number.

Rebecca read it first.

Then she dropped the phone.

I picked it up.

My hands trembled.

The message was short.

But it destroyed whatever hope remained that this was a misunderstanding.

*I know what you did to me. Tell Michael the truth before I do.*

I looked up.

Rebecca was crying.

Not pretending.

Not performing.

Actually crying.

And that terrified me.

Because it meant one thing.

Whatever happened between Rebecca and Claire…

Was bigger than I imagined.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me everything.””

He stayed silent.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Claire found out Rebecca wasn’t who she said she was.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Who was she?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca looked at me.

And said the words I would never forget.

“My name isn’t Rebecca.””

The chapel behind us suddenly felt impossibly far away.

The wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The white dress.

Everything that had represented a future.

Gone.

“What did you say?””

She wiped her tears.

“My name isn’t Rebecca.””

Emily moved closer to me.

I held her hand.

“Then who are you?””

The woman I was supposed to marry looked at me with a broken expression.

May you like

And whispered:

“The woman your wife spent her last days trying to expose.””
