Chapter 8: Three Daughters, One Terrible Lie
The coast guard arrived before I could answer Emily.
Two patrol boats approached the Serenity, their blue lights flashing against the darkening water.
A loudspeaker ordered everyone to remain visible and keep their hands where they could be seen.
Marcus didn't move.
He kept one hand on Emily's shoulder and the other near his jacket.
"Step away from the girl!"" an officer shouted.
Marcus laughed.
"She's my niece. This is a family matter.""
The officer raised his voice.
"Sir, step away from her immediately!""
Emily looked terrified.
I recognized that expression.
It was the same expression Lily had worn when she was hanging over the railing.
The same fear.
The same desperate search for someone she could trust.
I stepped toward the stern.
"Emily!""
She flinched.
"Don't call me that!""
I stopped.
Her eyes were red.
"My name is Emma.""
I swallowed.
"Okay.""
"You don't get to call me Emily.""
I nodded.
"Okay, Emma.""
Marcus leaned toward her.
"See? He doesn't even know what to say.""
I looked directly at my daughter.
"I don't know how to explain thirteen years in a few sentences. But I want you to know one thing.""
She shook her head.
"Don't.""
"I never stopped loving you.""
Her face twisted.
"Then why did you leave me?""
I felt the question tear through me.
"I didn't leave you.""
"That's what everyone says.""
She pulled a folded letter from her pocket.
"Your name is on this.""
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
It looked like mine.
The letter read:
I have decided that raising this child is no longer possible. Please arrange a permanent placement. I do not wish to be contacted regarding her future.
My hands began shaking.
"I never wrote that.""
Marcus laughed.
"Of course you did.""
I looked at him.
"You forged my signature.""
"Prove it.""
Richard stepped forward.
"I can.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Richard held up his phone.
"I have the original documents.""
Marcus's smile disappeared.
Richard continued.
"I found the transfer agreement yesterday. I also found the payment records connecting you to the private adoption agency.""
Marcus lunged toward him.
The coast guard officers shouted.
"STOP!""
Marcus froze.
Richard raised both hands.
"I have copies of everything.""
The officers moved toward the motorboat.
One of them ordered Marcus to put his hands behind his head.
For the first time that day, Marcus looked genuinely afraid.
He turned toward me.
"Daniel, think carefully. If I go down, everyone goes down.""
I stared at him.
"Good.""
He was handcuffed.
But the damage he had caused was still sitting in front of me.
Emma.
My daughter.
She looked at me as though I were a stranger.
And perhaps, from her perspective, I was.
I couldn't demand forgiveness from a child who had spent thirteen years believing I had abandoned her.
I could only tell her the truth.
The coast guard helped transfer the injured passengers and crew to the patrol vessel.
Lily was carried across first.
She refused to let go of my hand.
When she saw Emma, she stopped.
"Is that my sister?""
I nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Lily looked at her carefully.
Then she walked forward.
"Hi.""
Emma wiped her cheeks.
"Hi.""
Lily held out her stuffed rabbit.
"Do you want to borrow this? It's my favorite, but you look sad.""
Emma stared at the rabbit.
Then she began crying again.
She accepted it.
"Thank you.""
Lily smiled.
"Daddy says we have to share.""
I nearly broke down.
Three daughters.
One little girl I had raised.
One young woman I had never been allowed to know.
And another child whose existence I had spent thirteen years mourning.
Except Claire had just told me that Emily was alive.
I looked toward the second patrol boat.
"Where is my wife?""
An officer pointed toward the cabin.
"Mrs. Carter is being questioned.""
I approached Vanessa.
She was sitting on a bench, wrapped in a blanket.
Her eyes were swollen.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Daniel.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what? That I would divorce you? That I would hate you?""
She lowered her head.
"I didn't know how to fix it.""
I stared at her.
"You had eleven years.""
"I know.""
"You had thirteen years with Emily.""
"I know.""
"And today, you watched your brother put Lily over the ocean.""
She covered her mouth.
"I didn't know he would hurt her.""
"Then why did you help him?""
She began crying.
"Because he told me he had information about my daughter.""
I looked at her.
"Which daughter?""
She swallowed.
"Grace.""
I froze.
"What?""
Vanessa looked toward the young woman sitting beside Lily.
"He told me Grace was in danger. He said her adoptive family had been threatening to take her overseas.""
I stared at her.
"Grace's adoptive family?""
"Yes. He said if I helped him, he would bring her home.""
Grace stood.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa looked at her.
Grace's voice trembled.
"My adoptive parents never threatened me. They raised me. They loved me.""
Vanessa started sobbing.
Grace stepped backward.
"Why did you let him do this?""
Vanessa couldn't answer.
I looked at the officer.
"Make sure every statement is recorded.""
He nodded.
Then Richard approached.
"Daniel, there's something else.""
I turned.
"What?""
He handed me a small storage drive.
"I found this in Marcus's cabin.""
"What is it?""
"Security footage and financial records.""
I looked at the device.
"How much?""
"Enough to connect him to the hospital, the adoption agency, the forged documents, and the yacht sabotage.""
I stared at Richard.
"Why did you wait until today?""
He looked ashamed.
"Because I helped him move money.""
I stepped closer.
"What?""
"I didn't know about the children at first. He told me it was a business restructuring. When I realized the documents were fraudulent, he threatened my family.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone has an excuse.""
"I know.""
He handed me another envelope.
"But this is different.""
I opened it.
Inside was a list of payments made over thirteen years.
One payment appeared every month.
The recipient was a private medical foundation.
The total exceeded three million dollars.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Maintain the arrangement until all three children are accounted for.
I looked up.
"All three?""
Richard nodded.
"Daniel, I think Marcus wasn't working alone.""
"Who else?""
He hesitated.
Then he pointed toward the far end of the patrol boat.
A man was sitting with two coast guard officers.
He wore a white shirt and a dark jacket.
His hair was silver.
His face was familiar.
It was Peter Lawson.
The doctor who had delivered Grace.
The doctor who had spoken through the loudspeaker.
I walked toward him.
"Peter.""
He looked up.
"Daniel.""
I held up the payment records.
"Did you take money to switch my daughter's medical records?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you arrange Emily's disappearance?""
His expression remained calm.
Then he looked past me toward the children.
"I can explain.""
I leaned forward.
"Then explain.""
Peter folded his hands.
"Your first daughter was never meant to disappear permanently.""
I felt my fists tighten.
"What does that mean?""
He looked at the girls.
"Marcus needed leverage. He believed you would eventually become too powerful to control. He wanted a way to force you into giving him a controlling interest in your company.""
"By stealing my children?""
"By creating circumstances in which you would have no choice.""
I stared at him.
"Who was the third child?""
Peter's eyes moved toward Lily.
Then toward Grace.
Finally, he looked at Emma.
"There was another baby.""
My heart began pounding.
"Who?""
Peter lowered his voice.
"Vanessa's biological daughter. The one she believed she had lost before Lily was born.""
I stared at him.
"Grace?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Then who?""
Peter looked directly at me.
"Your youngest daughter wasn't the only baby switched that year.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
He continued.
"One of the three girls was never supposed to be part of this family.""
I looked at the children.
Lily.
Grace.
Emma.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the truth was even worse than anything I had imagined.
May you like
Peter leaned closer.
"The child you believe is yours may not be yours at all.""
