Chapter 2: The Five Minutes That Almost Killed Her
I carried Lily into the main salon.
Her little fingers were trembling, and her knees were scraped raw. I wrapped her in a thick white towel while Richard called for the yacht's emergency medical kit.
Vanessa followed us inside.
"Daniel, let me see her.""
Lily immediately turned away.
"Not Mommy.""
Vanessa looked offended.
"Excuse me?""
I raised my hand.
"Don't.""
She stared at me.
"She's my daughter too.""
"Then act like it.""
Her face tightened.
I had never spoken to my wife that way before.
But I had never watched our daughter hang over thirty miles of ocean before, either.
Richard returned with the first-aid kit.
"She needs to be checked by a doctor.""
"I know," I replied.
I examined Lily's hands. Her palms were scraped and red, but thankfully, no fingers appeared broken.
I cleaned the cuts as gently as I could.
She winced.
"Sorry, sweetheart.""
"It's okay, Daddy.""
I kissed her knuckles.
"Can you tell me exactly what happened?""
She looked at the door.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at me.
"Can we talk somewhere quiet?""
"Of course.""
I carried her into the small guest cabin and closed the door.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
I could hear the low vibration of the engines through the walls.
Lily sat on the bed, wrapped in the towel, looking much smaller than she had that morning.
I crouched in front of her.
"You're safe now.""
She nodded.
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
She swallowed.
"Uncle Marcus said you were busy.""
My jaw tightened.
"What else did he say?""
"He said Mommy wanted me to come outside.""
I stared at her.
"Mommy?""
Lily nodded.
"He said she had a surprise for me.""
"What surprise?""
"He wouldn't tell me.""
I took a slow breath.
"Then what happened?""
"He showed me the red button.""
"What did it do?""
"He said it made the little platform move.""
I knew exactly which platform she meant.
The yacht had a hydraulic swim platform at the stern. It could lower toward the water for swimming, but its controls were supposed to remain secured whenever the vessel was underway.
I had specifically instructed the crew never to operate it while the yacht was moving.
"Did he ask you to touch it?""
She shook her head.
"He pushed it. Then he told me to stand near the back and look at the water.""
My stomach tightened.
"And then?""
"He told me to hold the rope.""
"What rope?""
"The white one.""
I closed my eyes briefly.
"Did he tell you why?""
"He said it was a game.""
Her voice became smaller.
"He said I had to pretend I was a pirate.""
I felt something cold crawl up my spine.
"Then what happened?""
Lily looked down at her bandaged hands.
"He pulled the rope.""
My breath caught.
"Which way?""
"Toward him.""
She demonstrated with her small hands.
"He said, 'Hold tight, Lily.'' Then the boat moved, and I fell.""
I struggled to keep my voice steady.
"Did Uncle Marcus let go?""
She nodded.
"He said he was going to get something.""
"Did he come back?""
"Not until I called you.""
I sat completely still.
Five minutes.
That was all I had been away from her.
But apparently, Marcus had needed less than one minute to put her in danger.
I pulled my daughter into my arms.
"You did nothing wrong. Nothing.""
She started crying again.
"Are you mad at Uncle Marcus?""
I hesitated.
"Why do you ask?""
"Because he said if I told you, everyone would be angry with me.""
My hands curled into fists.
"Did he say anything else?""
She nodded against my chest.
"He said Daddy would lose everything if I ruined the surprise.""
I felt sick.
Before I could ask another question, someone knocked.
"Daniel?"" Richard called.
"We need you outside.""
I kissed Lily's forehead.
"Stay here. Lock the door. I'll be right back.""
She grabbed my wrist.
"Don't go for five minutes.""
I looked into her eyes.
"I won't leave you alone again.""
I waited until she had locked the door before stepping into the corridor.
Richard was standing beside the salon entrance.
His expression was serious.
"Come with me.""
We walked toward the rear deck.
The yacht's captain, a broad-shouldered man named Thomas Reed, was examining the safety equipment.
He looked up when I approached.
"Mr. Carter, I've inspected the stern.""
"And?""
"The safety line was deliberately severed.""
I held out the loose end.
"How certain are you?""
Thomas turned it over.
"Very. This isn't wear and tear. Somebody used a knife or heavy-duty cutting tool.""
"Can you tell when?""
"Not precisely. But the cut is fresh.""
I looked toward the swim platform.
"Who operated the hydraulic system?""
Thomas frowned.
"Nobody was authorized to operate it.""
"Who had access?""
"The captain, first officer, and anyone with the security code.""
"Marcus?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Mr. Marcus asked me about the platform controls this morning.""
My blood pressure rose.
"What did he ask?""
"He wanted to know how to lower it manually.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Why would he need to know that?""
Thomas shook his head.
"He said he wanted to take some photographs while we were cruising.""
I stared at the water.
The same water that had almost swallowed my daughter.
"Show me the control panel.""
Thomas led us to the stern console.
A small red indicator was flashing.
He opened the control compartment.
"There.""
He pointed to a switch.
"Emergency platform release.""
I leaned closer.
The protective cover had been removed.
"Can you access the system logs?""
Thomas nodded.
"If the recorder hasn't been wiped.""
"Then check it.""
He connected a diagnostic device.
A few seconds later, a list of recent operations appeared on the small screen.
The hydraulic platform had been activated at 2:54 p.m.
The safety alarm had been disabled thirty seconds later.
And at 2:57 p.m., the emergency release system had been triggered.
Three minutes before Lily called me.
I stared at the screen.
"Who entered the override code?""
Thomas checked the access record.
His expression changed.
"Captain?""
"Yes?""
"That code belongs to Mr. Marcus.""
Richard swore under his breath.
I rubbed my forehead.
"Call the coast guard. Tell them we have a child injured in a possible deliberate overboard incident. I want a full record of everything.""
Thomas nodded and reached for his radio.
Then I heard a voice behind us.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Daniel.""
Marcus.
He was leaning against the doorway with his hands in his pockets.
I turned slowly.
"What mistake?""
"You're turning a family accident into some kind of criminal investigation.""
I stepped toward him.
"An accident?""
"She slipped.""
"The safety line was cut.""
"Maybe it caught on something.""
"The platform was activated.""
"People use the platform all the time.""
"Not while we're moving at twenty knots.""
Marcus rolled his eyes.
"Jesus, Daniel. Do you hear yourself?""
I walked closer until we were standing face-to-face.
"Why did you tell my daughter to hold that rope?""
He blinked.
"What?""
"She told me everything.""
For the first time, his confidence faltered.
Then he laughed.
"She's eight years old. She's frightened. You can't take everything she says seriously.""
"She described the control panel. She described the red button. She described you pulling the rope.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You're looking for somebody to blame because you weren't watching her.""
His words hit harder than I expected.
Because there was a part of me that already blamed myself.
I had been inside working.
I had promised five minutes.
And I had broken that promise.
But Marcus had just made a mistake.
He had confused my guilt with weakness.
I grabbed the front of his shirt.
"Say one more word about my daughter, and you'll regret it.""
Richard pulled me back.
"Daniel!""
Marcus straightened his shirt.
"See? This is exactly why nobody wants to tell you anything.""
"What does that mean?""
He looked past me toward the salon.
"Ask your wife.""
I turned.
Vanessa was standing near the sliding doors.
She had heard everything.
Her face was pale.
"Vanessa," I said quietly.
"What does Marcus mean?""
She looked at her brother.
Then at me.
"Daniel, we need to talk privately.""
"Now.""
"Not here.""
I stepped closer.
"Did you know about the platform?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Did you tell Marcus to take Lily outside?""
Her eyes flickered.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"Vanessa?""
She pressed her lips together.
"Marcus said he wanted to surprise her.""
"What kind of surprise?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why are you afraid to answer?""
She looked toward the cabin where Lily was waiting.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Because I knew he was going to do something that would make you angry.""
I felt the deck tilt beneath my feet.
"What did he plan?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He wanted to teach you a lesson.""
"What lesson?""
She looked directly at me.
"About what happens when you refuse to share what's yours.""
I stared at my wife.
For twelve years, I had believed Vanessa was the one person in the world who would never hurt our daughter.
Now she was standing thirty miles offshore, explaining that her brother had planned something against me.
May you like
And I suddenly understood something much worse.
Marcus might not have been acting alone.
