Chapter 3: My Wife's Secret

I didn't recognize my wife anymore.

The woman standing in front of me wore Vanessa's face, spoke with Vanessa's voice, and had the same wedding ring I had slipped onto her finger twelve years earlier.

But when she said her brother had wanted to teach me a lesson, I realized I was looking at someone I might never have truly known.

"Come inside," I said.

Vanessa glanced toward Marcus.

He gave her a barely noticeable nod.

That tiny movement told me more than any confession could have.

I turned to Richard.

"Stay with Marcus.""

Marcus laughed.

"Are you serious?""

"Very.""

Richard stepped between us.

"Don't make this worse.""

Marcus raised both hands.

"Fine. I'm not going anywhere.""

I followed Vanessa into the main salon.

The sliding doors closed behind us.

For a few seconds, the only sound was the engine humming beneath our feet.

I placed both hands on the dining table.

"Start talking.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel, you're overreacting.""

I stared at her.

"Our daughter nearly died.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Of course I do.""

"Then explain why your brother knew about the platform controls, why he cut the safety line, and why Lily believes you sent her outside.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I didn't know he was going to cut anything.""

"But you knew he was planning something.""

She didn't answer.

I pulled out a chair.

"Sit down.""

"Don't order me around.""

"Then stand. I don't care. Just tell me the truth.""

She walked to the window and stared at the water.

"Marcus has been having financial problems.""

I almost laughed.

"That's your explanation?""

"No. Just listen.""

"Your brother almost killed my daughter. I am listening.""

Vanessa turned.

"He borrowed money from people he shouldn't have borrowed from. He owes hundreds of thousands of dollars.""

"How much?""

"I don't know exactly.""

"How much, Vanessa?""

She hesitated.

"Almost eight hundred thousand.""

I stared at her.

"Where did he get that kind of money?""

"Private lenders. Business investments. Gambling.""

I shook my head.

"And what does that have to do with Lily?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Marcus thought you would help him.""

"I've already helped him.""

"You gave him fifty thousand dollars two years ago.""

"And he spent it in six months.""

"He needed more.""

I stared at her.

"How much more?""

She looked away.

"Two million.""

The room seemed to become smaller.

"Two million dollars?""

"Yes.""

"And when I refused?""

"He became desperate.""

I leaned against the table.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you always say no.""

"To giving your brother two million dollars?""

"To helping my family!""

I let out a bitter laugh.

"He is your family. Lily is my family. And today, your brother put our daughter over the ocean.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Daniel, I didn't think he would do that.""

"What did you think he would do?""

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

I stepped closer.

"Tell me exactly what he planned.""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"Three days ago, he came to our house. He said he had an idea.""

"What idea?""

"He wanted to scare you.""

"How?""

"He said he would stage a small accident. Something that would make you understand how quickly things could go wrong when you refused to cooperate.""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"And you agreed?""

"I told him it was stupid.""

"Did you tell him to stop?""

"Yes.""

"Did you tell me?""

"No.""

"Why?""

She started crying.

"Because he said he would lose everything. He said the people he owed would hurt him.""

I stared at her.

"And you decided our daughter was an acceptable risk?""

"No!""

Her voice broke.

"I swear I never thought Lily would be involved.""

I looked toward the corridor.

My little girl was in the guest cabin, wearing a borrowed sweatshirt, waiting for her parents to make the world feel safe again.

I lowered my voice.

"Vanessa, she told me you sent her outside.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I told Marcus to keep her away from the railing. I thought he would just take her to the swim platform for a photograph.""

"While the yacht was moving?""

"He said the platform was safe!""

I closed my eyes.

For twelve years, I had trusted my wife with every important thing in my life.

My money.

My business.

My daughter.

Now I couldn't trust her with a single sentence.

I took out my phone.

"I want you to tell the coast guard exactly what you just told me.""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"No.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Daniel, please. Don't involve the police.""

"Why?""

"Because Marcus will go to prison.""

I couldn't believe it.

"That's what you're worried about?""

"He made a mistake!""

"A mistake?""

"He didn't mean for Lily to fall!""

I stepped back.

"How do you know?""

She looked at me.

And then she said something that made my stomach turn.

"Because he told me the rope was supposed to catch her.""

I froze.

"What rope?""

"The safety line.""

I looked down at the severed orange cord still lying near the table.

"That line was cut.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"That's impossible.""

"Thomas confirmed it.""

She shook her head.

"Marcus said he had secured everything.""

I stared at her.

"Who cut it?""

"I don't know.""

"Who was supposed to catch Lily?""

She began crying harder.

"I don't know, Daniel!""

I grabbed the back of a chair.

There was something wrong with the story.

If Marcus had planned a staged scare, why had he disabled the safety alarm?

Why had the emergency release been activated?

And why had the safety line been deliberately cut?

Unless the plan had changed.

Unless someone had decided that a scare wasn't enough.

A sudden knock interrupted us.

Richard entered.

"Daniel, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

"Captain Thomas found something in the engine-room security footage.""

My heart started pounding.

"What?""

"Someone accessed the rear control compartment before we left the marina.""

"Who?""

Richard hesitated.

Then he handed me a tablet.

The screen showed a grainy security recording.

A figure entered the yacht at 8:17 that morning.

The person wore a dark baseball cap, sunglasses, and a gray jacket.

They walked directly to the rear control panel.

After looking over their shoulder, they opened the compartment and worked inside for nearly two minutes.

The figure turned toward the camera just before leaving.

I paused the recording.

The face was partially visible.

I recognized the jacket.

I recognized the watch.

And I recognized the way the person walked.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't one of the crew.

It was my wife.

I slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

"Tell me that's not you.""

Her lips trembled.

"Daniel...""

"Tell me.""

She looked at the frozen image.

Then she looked at me.

"I can explain.""

I felt as though someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

"You accessed the control panel?""

"I didn't know what he was going to do!""

"Then what did you do?""

She backed away.

"Marcus asked me to disable the alarm temporarily.""

"Why?""

"He said it kept triggering whenever the platform was used.""

"And the safety line?""

"I didn't touch the safety line.""

"Did you know he was going to take Lily outside?""

Vanessa nodded.

Just once.

I stared at her.

"Did you know she would be hanging over the ocean?""

"No! Daniel, please!""

I moved toward the door.

"Where are you going?""

"To get Lily.""

"Daniel, wait!""

I stopped.

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a small black phone.

It wasn't the phone she normally used.

She held it out with shaking hands.

"There's something else you need to see.""

I didn't take it.

"What is that?""

"Marcus gave it to me yesterday.""

"Why?""

"He told me to keep it with me in case anything went wrong.""

I stared at the device.

"What's on it?""

"Messages.""

"Between you and Marcus?""

She nodded.

I took the phone.

The screen was already unlocked.

There were dozens of messages between them.

I scrolled through the conversation.

Most were about money, the yacht, and my business.

Then I reached a message sent at 11:42 that morning.

Marcus:

Make sure Daniel stays inside when we do it. We need at least five minutes.

Vanessa:

What if Lily gets scared?

Marcus:

She won't. She's a child. Just keep her occupied.

I scrolled further.

Another message appeared.

Marcus:

After today, he'll have no choice but to sign.

My fingers went numb.

"Sign what?""

Vanessa was crying silently now.

I looked at the next attachment.

It was a photograph of a legal document.

At the top were the words:

*CARTER MARITIME HOLDINGS — TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST.*

My name was printed at the bottom.

My signature was already there.

Except I had never signed it.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What is this?""

She shook her head.

"Marcus said it was just a draft.""

I zoomed in.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Then I noticed the date.

The transfer was scheduled to take effect the following morning.

And beneath the document was a message that had been sent only four minutes before Lily called me.

Marcus:

If he refuses, we move to Plan B.

I stared at those three words.

Plan B.

My daughter had nearly drowned.

My wife had disabled the safety alarm.

And someone had prepared a document transferring control of my entire company.

But the final message was what made my blood run cold.

It had been sent from Vanessa's phone.

*Vanessa:*

What if Daniel finds out what happened to his first daughter?

I read it once.

Then again.

My first daughter?

I looked up at my wife.

"Vanessa...""

She was trembling.

I held the phone toward her.

"What does this mean?""

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the yacht's emergency alarm suddenly began screaming.

A crew member shouted from the cockpit.

"CAPTAIN! WE'VE LOST ENGINE POWER!""

The floor shuddered beneath my feet.

Outside, the yacht began turning sideways against the waves.

May you like

And from the corridor, I heard Lily scream.

"DADDY! SOMEBODY'S TRYING TO OPEN THE DOOR!""
