Chapter 9: The Original Deed
For seventeen years, I had imagined what I would say if my uncle ever came back.
I thought I would cry.
Maybe scream.
Maybe ask him why he had abandoned our family.
But when Richard Carter stood across the street, smiling as though he'd simply returned from a long vacation, I couldn't find a single word.
Lauren grabbed my arm.
"Don't go near him.""
Richard crossed the street anyway.
He was older than the man in my childhood memories, but his movements were still confident.
His shoes were polished.
His jacket looked expensive.
And his wedding ring finger was bare.
"Emma," he said again.
I stared at him.
"You're supposed to be dead.""
He gave a small smile.
"Your father was very good at creating stories.""
Lauren stepped forward.
"Don't you dare blame Dad.""
Richard looked at her.
"Lauren. You've grown up.""
"Unfortunately, so have you.""
He chuckled.
Then his eyes moved toward Daniel.
"Robert's boy.""
Daniel didn't smile.
"Where's Thomas?""
Richard shrugged.
"I wouldn't know.""
"His car was found near the railway bridge.""
"Terrible.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did you see him today?""
Richard looked at his watch.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
I stared at him.
"You were photographed with Ethan yesterday.""
His expression didn't change.
"Ethan is a business associate.""
"He is my husband.""
Richard looked at me.
"Not for much longer, I imagine.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why did you help him steal my property?""
Richard sighed.
"Nobody stole anything.""
"Then why did he forge my signature?""
"That's a legal matter between you and Ethan.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're my uncle.""
"And you're an adult.""
He adjusted his jacket.
"You should have listened to your father.""
I stepped closer.
"I did. That's why I'm here.""
His smile disappeared.
For the first time, I saw something behind his eyes.
Anger.
"Your father was stubborn," he said.
"He made promises he couldn't keep.""
"What promises?""
Richard looked toward the police officers.
Then back at me.
"Not here.""
I shook my head.
"No. You're going to explain it now.""
He sighed again.
"Very well. Your father and I built something together. The land was valuable, and we both understood that. But when the development company approached us, he changed his mind.""
"Why?""
"Because he suddenly decided the land should be protected.""
I frowned.
"Because of the water source?""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Your father had a habit of becoming sentimental.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"That water source supplies several communities.""
Richard shrugged.
"Water is valuable. People need it. Companies need it. That's business.""
I stared at him.
"So you wanted to sell it.""
"I wanted to develop it.""
"Without my permission?""
Richard looked directly at me.
"Your father never should have left you in control.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Why?""
"Because you don't understand the value of what you inherited.""
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at my uncle.
"Maybe I don't. But I understand the value of keeping promises.""
Richard's expression hardened.
He took a step closer.
"Emma, listen carefully. You have no idea what your father did to protect that land. You don't know how many people he made enemies of.""
"Then tell me.""
He looked away.
Before he could answer, an officer approached.
"Mr. Carter?""
Richard turned.
"Yes?""
"We need to ask you a few questions about your contact with Thomas Whitmore.""
His expression changed.
"Why?""
"Because we have reason to believe you may have information about his disappearance.""
Richard gave a short laugh.
"That's absurd.""
The officer remained calm.
"Would you come with us?""
Richard looked toward me.
For a moment, I thought he would refuse.
Then he smiled again.
"Of course.""
He walked toward the police car.
But before getting inside, he turned.
"Emma, one piece of advice.""
I didn't respond.
"Don't trust Daniel Mitchell.""
Then he got into the car.
I stared after him.
Daniel looked furious.
"He's trying to divide us.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he say that?""
Daniel didn't answer.
The following morning, Patricia called an emergency meeting at her office.
Daniel arrived first.
Then Lauren.
I was the last to enter.
Patricia had arranged the documents across a conference table.
She looked exhausted.
"Thomas is still missing," she said.
I sat down.
"Have the police found anything?""
"They found evidence that someone entered his office and removed several files.""
"Which files?""
Patricia pointed to an empty space on the table.
"The original trust deed.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Is that the document my father mentioned?""
"Yes.""
She opened a folder.
"The copy you found is an amendment. It confirms the existence of the trust and identifies Daniel as its protector. But the original deed contains the complete terms.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why is the original so important?""
"Because it defines what can and cannot be done with the property.""
I frowned.
"Can't the copy establish that?""
"Not completely. The original contains a clause concerning unauthorized transfers and financial compensation.""
Patricia turned another page.
"Your father anticipated that someone might try to exploit the land.""
I looked at Lauren.
"How?""
Patricia answered.
"If the property is transferred without the required approval, the entire development agreement becomes void. The person responsible may also become liable for substantial damages.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"So Ethan couldn't legally sell anything.""
"Correct.""
I looked at the documents.
"Then why did the developer send him $200,000?""
Patricia sighed.
"Because Ethan presented himself as an authorized representative and supplied supporting paperwork.""
"Which was false.""
"Yes.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Can we get the money back?""
"That's one of the things we're working on.""
She opened another folder.
"However, I found something interesting in the banking records.""
She handed me a printed transaction history.
The $200,000 advance payment had been divided among several accounts.
One belonged to E&B Consulting.
Another belonged to Vanessa Reed.
A third belonged to Carter Land Holdings.
And the final transfer was made to a private trust.
I stared at the name.
*THE MITCHELL FAMILY LEGACY TRUST.*
I looked at Daniel.
"Is that yours?""
He shook his head.
"I've never seen that account.""
Patricia nodded.
"That's because it's not your father's trust. It's a separate entity.""
She turned the page.
The listed administrator was Robert Mitchell.
Daniel's father.
I looked up.
"But Robert died twenty years ago.""
"According to the records, the trust was never formally dissolved.""
Daniel stared at the page.
"Who controls it now?""
Patricia hesitated.
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You want the truth about your uncle? Meet me at the old railway station at noon. Come alone.
I showed Patricia.
She immediately shook her head.
"No.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who sent it?""
"Unknown number.""
"Don't go.""
I stared at the message.
"What if it's Thomas?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Or Richard.""
I put my phone down.
But my mind was racing.
Thomas was missing.
Richard had been arrested for questioning.
The original deed was gone.
And someone was trying to contact me privately.
I knew I shouldn't go.
But I also knew that someone was clearly desperate to speak.
Patricia called the police and forwarded the message.
Then Daniel suggested something.
"We can arrange a controlled meeting.""
I looked at him.
"With the police?""
"Yes. If someone wants to talk, we'll let them.""
I nodded.
At 11:55 a.m., I sat inside Daniel's car near the old railway station.
Two unmarked police vehicles were parked nearby.
Lauren was with Patricia.
Daniel sat beside me.
My phone was in my hand.
At exactly noon, a message arrived.
Platform three.
I looked through the windshield.
The station was nearly empty.
An old clock hung above the entrance.
A woman pushed a luggage trolley across the platform.
Then I saw him.
A man in a brown coat.
He walked slowly toward the bench near platform three.
He looked older than Richard.
His hair was almost entirely white.
He carried a black leather briefcase.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Is that Thomas?""
I couldn't tell.
The man stopped beneath the clock.
Then he turned toward us.
He lifted one hand.
Daniel opened the car door.
"Stay here.""
But I was already stepping out.
The man looked directly at me.
"Emma Carter?""
I nodded.
"My name is Thomas Whitmore.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Where have you been?""
He looked around nervously.
"Not safe here.""
"Then why did you ask me to come?""
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were several documents.
One of them had my father's signature.
Another had Richard's.
And the third showed Ethan's name.
Thomas looked at Daniel.
"Robert's son. I see you found your way here.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What happened to you?""
Thomas shook his head.
"Richard's people wanted the original deed. I refused to give it to them.""
I stared at him.
"Who took it?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he said, "Your husband.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Ethan?""
Thomas nodded.
"He came to my office yesterday with Richard. They demanded the original deed.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Why didn't you call the police?""
"I tried.""
Thomas opened his briefcase further.
There was a small recorder inside.
"I recorded the entire conversation.""
He pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then Ethan's voice.
"Just give us the document, Thomas.""
Another voice answered.
Richard.
"You've had enough time.""
Thomas replied.
"Your father would be ashamed of you, Richard.""
Then Ethan spoke again.
"Once the deed is transferred, nobody can stop us.""
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
Richard's voice became sharper.
"Don't worry about Emma. She'll sign whatever we put in front of her.""
Then Ethan laughed.
"She already did.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel looked at me.
I couldn't speak.
Thomas stopped the recording.
"There's more.""
He removed a final document.
"This is the original deed.""
I stared at it.
"Where did you get it?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Your father gave me a second copy before he died. He told me to keep it hidden until the right moment.""
I reached for it.
But Thomas pulled it back.
"Before you take it, there's something you need to understand.""
He turned to Daniel.
"Your father didn't just protect the land.""
Daniel frowned.
"What else did he do?""
Thomas looked between us.
"He protected the people who depend on it.""
He opened the deed.
A final clause appeared near the bottom.
I read it slowly.
Then I looked up.
"Daniel?""
He leaned closer.
His face changed.
"What?""
I pointed to the line.
The trust had a second beneficiary.
Not the developer.
Not Richard.
Not Ethan.
A community organization established to protect the local water supply.
And its current legal representative was listed as—
I stopped.
Daniel finished reading.
"The Mitchell Family Foundation.""
Thomas nodded.
"Your father and Robert established it together.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Why didn't my father tell me?""
"Because he wanted you to have a choice.""
Thomas closed the document.
"And now you must make that choice.""
I looked at Daniel.
"What choice?""
Thomas's voice dropped.
"Whether you want to preserve the trust or dissolve it.""
I frowned.
"Can it be dissolved?""
"Yes. But only with the approval of both the landowner and the trust protector.""
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at Thomas.
"Why would we dissolve it?""
Thomas looked toward the railway tracks.
"Because the development company has made another offer.""
He handed Daniel a document.
The proposed payment was $4.8 million.
I stared at the number.
Four million, eight hundred thousand dollars.
Then I noticed the date.
The offer had been made that morning.
I looked at Thomas.
"Who authorized this?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked directly at Daniel.
"Your father's foundation received the offer.""
Daniel went completely still.
Thomas continued.
"And they accepted it.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
I stared at him.
"Who signed?""
Thomas turned the page.
The signature was at the bottom.
I recognized the handwriting from the trust documents.
*Daniel Mitchell.*
Daniel stepped backward.
"No.""
Thomas looked at him.
"That's what I thought.""
Daniel took the paper.
His hands were shaking.
"I never signed this.""
Thomas nodded.
"Then someone has forged your signature too.""
I looked at the document.
At the bottom was a date.
Yesterday.
And beside Daniel's signature was a witness.
*Ethan Carter.*
My husband had not only tried to steal my property.
He had somehow arranged a sale using a forged signature from the man my father had trusted to protect it.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Who has access to your father's foundation records?""
He looked at me.
Then he said something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Only three people.""
"Who?""
He swallowed.
"My father's attorney.""
"Who else?""
"My mother.""
"And the third?""
Daniel looked down at the signature.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Brooke.""
