Chapter 2: The Man Who Already Knew
Nobody spoke.
Daniel held the photograph between two fingers.
It showed Ethan and Brooke standing outside a hotel.
Not a random hotel.
The Lakeshore Hotel, forty miles from our neighborhood.
The date was printed in the lower corner.
Three months earlier.
Ethan was wearing the same leather jacket I'd bought him for his birthday.
Brooke was holding his hand.
And they were kissing.
I stared at the photograph.
Then at my husband.
"Three months?""
Ethan shook his head.
"Emma, listen. That's not—"
Daniel placed another photograph on the table.
This one showed them entering a restaurant together.
A third showed Brooke getting into Ethan's car.
A fourth showed them walking through the lobby of an apartment building.
I felt something cold move through my chest.
"Daniel," I whispered.
"How long have you known?""
"Since July.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He looked at me with tired eyes.
"Because I didn't have enough proof at first. And because I wanted to understand exactly what was happening before I came to you.""
Ethan gave a bitter laugh.
"This is ridiculous. You're following us now?""
Daniel slowly turned.
"No, Ethan. I hired a private investigator after I found hotel charges on our joint account.""
Brooke started crying.
"Daniel, please.""
He didn't look at her.
"You told me you were visiting your mother.""
"I can explain.""
"You told me you were helping Emma with her house.""
Brooke's lips trembled.
Daniel pointed toward the pool.
"Is this what you meant?""
The neighbors remained completely silent.
I had never seen Daniel angry.
He was usually the kind of man who apologized when someone else bumped into him.
He helped elderly neighbors carry groceries.
He volunteered at the community barbecue.
He once drove three hours to help Ethan when his car broke down.
But now his voice was different.
Controlled.
Almost frighteningly calm.
Ethan crossed his arms.
"Look, Daniel. Whatever happened between Brooke and me is none of your business.""
Daniel stared at him.
"That's interesting.""
He opened the envelope again.
"And whose business is this?""
He removed a printed bank statement.
Then another.
Then a document with a property address.
Ethan's arms dropped.
"What the hell is that?""
Daniel placed the papers beside the photographs.
"Do you recognize the address?""
Ethan looked down.
I leaned closer.
It was an apartment complex in the next town.
The same one I'd seen on the fourth photograph.
"Why would I recognize that?"" Ethan asked.
Daniel gave him a humorless smile.
"Because you've been paying rent there.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Daniel turned toward me.
"Emma, I didn't want to be the person who delivered this news, but you deserve to know.""
He tapped the statement.
"The apartment is registered under a company called E&B Consulting.""
I looked at Ethan.
His face had lost all color.
"Is that your company?"" I asked.
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck.
"It's a business arrangement.""
"With Brooke?""
"Emma, please.""
"Are you paying for an apartment with another woman?""
He exhaled sharply.
"It's complicated.""
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I'd spent eleven years married to a man who apparently believed that the word complicated could excuse anything.
Daniel reached into the envelope again.
"There is something else.""
Brooke stepped forward.
"Daniel, don't.""
He finally looked at her.
"Why? You didn't seem concerned about what Emma deserved to know.""
Brooke started sobbing.
Daniel pulled out a document and placed it on the table.
It was a company registration form.
I recognized the name at the top.
*E&B PROPERTY VENTURES LLC.*
Below it were two names.
Ethan Carter.
Brooke Mitchell.
And beneath those names was an initial investment amount.
$42,000.
I stared at it.
"Where did that money come from?""
Daniel answered before Ethan could.
"From a joint savings account Brooke and I had been building for eight years.""
Brooke covered her face.
Ethan stepped toward him.
"Don't drag finances into this.""
Daniel didn't move.
"You already dragged finances into it when you used my wife's money to start a business with your mistress.""
A murmur spread through the neighbors.
I looked at Ethan.
"Did you take money from our savings too?""
He didn't answer.
That silence was louder than the siren had been.
I felt my fingers go numb.
For years, we'd maintained a joint savings account for emergencies and future renovations.
I had been contributing every month.
Ethan handled the household finances because he claimed he was better at managing investments.
I had trusted him.
That was the part that hurt most.
Not the photographs.
Not even the woman in our pool.
The trust.
I looked at Daniel.
"How much money?""
He hesitated.
Then he handed me another sheet.
It was a transaction summary.
Several withdrawals were highlighted.
$8,000.
$12,500.
$6,200.
$9,000.
I added the figures twice because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
"Thirty-five thousand seven hundred dollars?""
Ethan finally spoke.
"I was going to put it back.""
I looked at him.
"When?""
He opened his mouth.
"After the business started making money.""
"What business?""
He gestured vaguely toward Daniel.
"Property investments.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's what he told us. But the business hasn't purchased a single property.""
He pulled out another document.
"It has purchased one thing.""
"What?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"An apartment lease. Furniture. Electronics. And a vehicle.""
Brooke whispered, "Please stop.""
Daniel ignored her.
"The vehicle is registered to Brooke.""
My husband suddenly looked very small.
The neighbors were still watching.
Mrs. Patterson had stopped pretending to be interested in anything other than the conversation.
Mr. Lewis had folded his arms.
A younger neighbor, Jessica, was recording something on her phone until her husband gently lowered it.
I didn't care who saw us anymore.
I wanted every hidden dollar exposed.
I wanted every lie dragged into daylight.
"Why did you come here today?"" I asked Daniel.
He took a breath.
"Because this morning, I received a message from Brooke.""
She looked up sharply.
"Daniel!""
He pulled out his phone.
"I think you should read it.""
He showed me the screen.
The message was from Brooke, sent at 10:42 a.m.
I'm meeting Ethan at Emma's today. We need to finish discussing the property deal. Please don't call me.
Another message followed.
If Emma comes home early, just tell her I'm helping with the neighborhood pool inspection.
I stared at the screen.
A strange laugh escaped my throat.
"The pool inspection?""
Daniel nodded.
"Apparently, they needed an excuse for spending time together.""
I turned toward Ethan.
"Did you actually tell her to use our pool?""
Ethan looked away.
"Emma, this isn't the time.""
"Then when is the time?""
He raised his voice.
"Can we stop doing this in front of everyone?""
I stepped closer.
"You brought her into my home. You brought her into my bed. You used our money to pay for another apartment. And now you want privacy?""
He lowered his voice.
"I made a mistake.""
I stared at him.
"How many mistakes does it take to create a company, rent an apartment, buy a car, and maintain a second relationship for three months?""
He said nothing.
Daniel slipped his phone back into his pocket.
"There's another reason I came.""
He walked toward the gate.
For a moment, I thought he was leaving.
Instead, he returned with a small cardboard box.
He placed it on the table.
Brooke began shaking her head.
"No.""
Daniel opened the box.
Inside were several items.
A spare apartment key.
Two hotel key cards.
A small jewelry box.
And a photograph.
I picked it up.
It showed Brooke sitting on a couch, smiling at the camera.
Beside her was Ethan.
Behind them was a Christmas tree.
My heart stopped.
The photograph was dated December 23 of the previous year.
I looked at Brooke.
"Last Christmas?""
She covered her mouth.
Daniel nodded.
"They've been involved longer than the three months I originally suspected.""
Ethan took a step forward.
"Daniel, you're making this worse.""
Daniel finally lost his composure.
He slammed his palm against the table.
"Worse? You think I'm making this worse?""
The box jumped.
A few neighbors flinched.
Daniel pointed at Ethan.
"I helped you carry furniture into that apartment. You told me you were storing equipment for your business. I trusted you enough to give you the garage code at my house.""
He shook his head.
"And you were sleeping with my wife while I was helping you.""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Keep your voice down.""
Daniel laughed.
"No. Not anymore.""
He turned toward the neighbors.
"Everyone here should know something. Ethan has been telling people he's investing in real estate. He's been using our money and Emma's money to finance a life he couldn't afford.""
I looked at the paperwork.
Then at Ethan.
"Is that true?""
He stared at the ground.
"Some of it.""
"Some?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"I can explain everything.""
Daniel reached into the box and removed one final document.
It was a printed email.
He handed it to me.
The subject line read:
*SUBJECT: TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP — CARTER RESIDENCE*
I frowned.
"What is this?""
Daniel looked directly at Ethan.
"Ask your husband why he was discussing the sale of your house.""
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
"My house?""
Ethan immediately stepped forward.
"Give me that.""
I pulled the paper away.
Daniel held up a hand.
"Don't.""
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
The document appeared to be a conversation between Ethan and a real estate broker.
He had asked about transferring ownership of our home into a business entity before listing it for sale.
My name appeared nowhere.
I looked up.
"Why are you trying to sell our house?""
Ethan's expression changed.
For the first time that afternoon, he looked genuinely frightened.
"Emma, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
He glanced at Daniel.
Then at the neighbors.
Finally, his eyes settled on me.
"I needed money.""
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel did.
"More than you think.""
He took another paper from the envelope and unfolded it.
"Because the house isn't the only thing he's been trying to transfer.""
May you like
He pointed toward the bottom of the document.
And when I read the name of the person listed as the intended new owner, I realized this affair was only the beginning.
