Chapter 7: The Man Who Disappeared

Daniel stared at his phone.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he pressed the call-back button.

One ring.

Two rings.

Three.

Voicemail.

He lowered the phone.

"Who was that?"" I asked.

"Thomas Whitmore.""

"I know his name. What did he mean by someone disappearing?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Ethan suddenly laughed.

It wasn't a nervous laugh.

It was almost dismissive.

"Are we seriously doing this? An old man calls, makes some ridiculous threat, and suddenly everyone believes him?""

Lauren turned toward him.

"Why are you so afraid of what he might say?""

"I'm not afraid.""

"Then why did you turn white when Daniel answered?""

Ethan grabbed his shirt from the table.

"I'm leaving.""

I stepped in front of him.

"You're not taking those documents.""

He stopped.

"Move, Emma.""

"No.""

"You're making a mistake.""

I looked directly into his eyes.

"That's what you told me every time you wanted me to sign something without reading it.""

He lowered his voice.

"You're going to regret humiliating me.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Watch what you say.""

Ethan turned toward him.

"This has nothing to do with you.""

Daniel looked at the document bearing his name.

"Apparently, it does.""

Ethan snatched his shirt and pulled it over his head.

He was halfway through putting on his shoes when Brooke spoke.

"Ethan, wait.""

He ignored her.

She walked toward him.

"Where are you going?""

"Home.""

"Which home?""

The question stopped him.

Brooke's voice cracked.

"Are you going to the apartment? The one you said we were going to move into?""

Ethan stared at her.

"Not now.""

"Then when? You told me we'd start our new life tomorrow.""

"Brooke, stop.""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small silver key.

"Then tell me what this opens.""

Ethan's expression changed.

Daniel looked at the key.

"Where did you get that?""

Brooke held it up.

"It was in Ethan's car. I thought it was for the storage unit.""

She looked at her husband.

"Is it?""

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel took a step closer.

"Let me see.""

Brooke handed him the key.

He examined it.

Then his face changed.

"This isn't a storage key.""

"What is it?"" I asked.

Daniel turned it over.

"Safe deposit box.""

Ethan immediately reached for it.

"Give that back.""

Daniel pulled his hand away.

"Where is the box?""

Ethan glared at him.

"That's none of your business.""

Brooke looked horrified.

"Why do you have a safe deposit box?""

Ethan snapped.

"Because I have business documents!""

Daniel studied the key.

"Which bank?""

No answer.

Then Brooke whispered something that made Daniel look up.

"There's a bank envelope in the glove compartment.""

Ethan turned sharply.

"Brooke!""

She flinched.

"I saw it last week. You told me it was a business account.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emma, I think we need to find out what's in that box.""

I nodded.

But before anyone could move, my phone vibrated.

An email notification.

The sender was an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*YOUR FATHER'S FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.*

My fingers went cold.

I opened it.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

Emma, if Daniel has contacted Thomas, do not let Ethan leave with the blue folder.

I looked at Lauren.

"Did you send this?""

She shook her head.

"Absolutely not.""

I checked the sender again.

Then I noticed the attachment.

A scanned photograph.

It showed my father standing outside a small brick building with another man.

I recognized Dad immediately.

The other man was younger, perhaps in his forties, with dark hair and a narrow face.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*September 14 — The Day We Made Our Promise.*

I enlarged the image.

The man beside my father was Daniel.

Not the Daniel standing beside me.

A younger man.

But unmistakably him.

I looked up.

"Daniel?""

He stared at the photograph.

His face drained of color.

"That's impossible.""

I held out the phone.

"Do you recognize this man?""

Daniel took it.

His hands began to shake.

"That's my father.""

The backyard went silent.

"Your father?"" I repeated.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"My father died when I was twenty-three.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Why was he with mine?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I don't know.""

Ethan suddenly laughed.

"Well, there you go. Mystery solved. Their families knew each other. Can we finally go?""

Daniel turned toward him.

"No.""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Daniel enlarged the photograph.

Then he noticed something in the background.

A sign above the brick building.

It read:

*WHITMORE TRUST OFFICE.*

Daniel looked at Lauren.

"Where did you get this photograph?""

Lauren shook her head.

"I didn't.""

The email had arrived from someone who knew about the blue folder.

Someone who knew Thomas.

Someone who apparently knew my father and Daniel's father had shared a secret.

I looked at the email details.

There was a second attachment.

This time, it was a scanned letter.

The handwriting was my father's.

I opened it.

Thomas,

If anything happens to me, please make sure Emma understands why I placed Daniel's name on the agreement. His father made a promise to me that neither of us has forgotten.

Ethan has begun asking questions about the eastern boundary. I believe he has discovered something, but I cannot prove what he intends to do.

Please keep Daniel informed.

There is more at stake than the land itself.

I stopped reading.

Then I looked at Ethan.

He was no longer trying to leave.

He was staring at the phone.

His face had become expressionless.

I recognized that look.

It was the same one he wore whenever he was trying to hide something.

"What did you discover about the eastern boundary?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

"Nothing.""

"Then why did Dad mention you?""

"Because your father never trusted me.""

Lauren stepped forward.

"Maybe he had a reason.""

Ethan turned toward her.

"Your father was paranoid.""

I felt something snap inside me.

"Don't talk about my father like that.""

He threw his hands up.

"Emma, I'm trying to tell you that he made a lot of mistakes. He borrowed money, made secret agreements, and involved people he shouldn't have.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Your father was telling the truth about one thing.""

Ethan frowned.

"What?""

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"Our fathers knew each other.""

He paused.

"And I think we need to find out why.""

Forty minutes later, we were sitting in the conference room of Daniel's attorney.

The neighborhood had finally dispersed.

Brooke had gone with Daniel, although they hadn't spoken to each other since leaving my house.

Ethan had been instructed not to remove any documents from the property. He'd left after receiving a call from his own attorney.

I had no intention of sleeping beside him again.

The attorney's name was Patricia Morgan.

She was in her late fifties, wore silver-framed glasses, and had the kind of calm expression that made people think twice before lying.

She examined the photograph, the inheritance documents, and the email.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Your father was Robert Mitchell?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Patricia leaned back.

"That explains quite a bit.""

I frowned.

"You know something?""

She opened a file cabinet and removed a thick folder.

"Your father and Robert Mitchell established a private land preservation trust almost thirty years ago. Thomas Whitmore was their attorney.""

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"I've never heard of this.""

Patricia continued.

"The trust was designed to protect the eastern section of the property from commercial exploitation. Your father provided the land. Robert Mitchell provided the initial funding.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because they believed the property contained something that should not be sold without careful consideration.""

"Quartz?""

Patricia shook her head.

"That was only part of it.""

She opened the folder.

Inside were old maps, environmental reports, and photographs.

One photograph showed a wooded hillside with a narrow stone entrance.

I leaned forward.

"What is that?""

"An underground water source.""

I blinked.

"What?""

"Your father's property contains a natural spring system. The eastern section connects to an underground aquifer that supplies water to several surrounding communities.""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"That's why my father invested in it?""

Patricia nodded.

"The trust was created to preserve the water source. The development company has been investigating the land for months because commercial access could be extremely profitable.""

I looked at the documents.

Suddenly, the proposed purchase price made more sense.

It wasn't just about quartz.

It was about water.

"Why didn't Dad tell me?""

Patricia's expression softened.

"He intended to. But before he could transfer the full administrative records to you, he became ill.""

I looked down.

"And Daniel's name?""

"Robert Mitchell was appointed as the independent protector of the trust. After his death, that responsibility passed to Daniel.""

Daniel looked stunned.

"So my father left me a responsibility I never knew I had?""

"Yes.""

I stared at Patricia.

"Does that mean Ethan was trying to sell the water rights too?""

She turned a page.

"Based on the documents you've shown me, he appears to have represented that he could deliver commercial access to the entire eastern section.""

My stomach tightened.

"And could he?""

"No.""

She closed the folder.

"Neither you nor Daniel authorized that agreement.""

I felt a wave of relief.

Then Patricia said something else.

"However, there's a complication.""

I looked at her.

"What complication?""

She pointed to a document in the folder.

"The trust's original administrator was Thomas Whitmore. According to the records, he resigned six months ago.""

"Why?""

Patricia hesitated.

"Because he reported an attempted theft of trust documents.""

I remembered the phone call.

The old man saying someone had disappeared.

I looked at Daniel.

"Was that the person who tried to steal the land?""

Patricia nodded slowly.

"Possibly.""

"Who was it?""

She turned the document around.

The name was printed clearly.

*Robert Mitchell.*

Daniel went completely still.

"My father?""

Patricia shook her head.

"Not your father. Another man with the same surname.""

Daniel stared at the paper.

"Who?""

Patricia turned to the final page.

Then she looked at me.

"The previous business partner of your father.""

I read the name.

And immediately recognized it.

*Richard Carter.*

My father's younger brother.

May you like

My uncle.

The man who had disappeared seventeen years earlier.
