Chapter 9: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The note sat between my fingers.
A simple piece of paper.
A few words.
But somehow it weighed more than every document, every secret, every lie I had uncovered that night.
*STOP DIGGING, CLARA.*
And beneath it:
*Chloe Bennett.*
My best friend’s name.
The woman who held me while I cried.
The woman who sat beside me in the hospital.
The woman who whispered that I would never be alone.
The woman carrying my husband’s child.
I looked at Julian.
“What do you mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
And that hesitation hurt more than the words themselves.
“Julian.””
He looked at me.
“Chloe knew Dr. Hale before I did.””
My stomach twisted.
“How?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
“You don’t know?””
He shook his head.
“She told me she knew someone who could help Leo.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
His face changed.
“Before Leo’s condition got worse.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Before.
That word kept appearing.
Before.
Before the diagnosis.
Before the treatment.
Before the funeral.
Before I knew anything.
“How did she know Leo was sick?””
Julian looked away.
“She was your friend.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“She was around us a lot.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Exactly.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“The person I trusted enough to let into my home.””
Julian didn’t defend her.
That told me everything.
Rachel picked up the note from the table.
“This changes everything.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
She stared at Chloe’s name.
“Because Dr. Hale didn’t find Leo by accident.””
My heart pounded.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel looked at Julian.
“You never told Clara how Dr. Hale got involved.””
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“I was going to.””
“When?””
His silence answered.
Rachel sighed.
“Chloe brought the connection.””
I felt sick.
“She introduced you?””
Julian nodded.
“She said she knew a doctor who specialized in rare heart conditions.””
I stared.
“My best friend found the doctor who treated my son?””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me?””
Julian looked ashamed.
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
A memory surfaced.
Chloe sitting beside me in the hospital cafeteria.
Her hand over mine.
Her saying:
“Clara, I know someone who might be able to help.””
At the time, I thought she was being kind.
I thought she was fighting for Leo.
I thought she was the only person besides Julian who understood my fear.
But now every memory felt different.
Every conversation had a shadow.
“When did you start sleeping with her?””
Julian flinched.
The question hung in the air.
“Clara…”
“When?””
He looked down.
“After Leo started treatment.””
My heart broke again.
“After?””
“Yes.””
“So while she was helping you find a doctor…”
“No.””
He shook his head quickly.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I didn’t know what she was doing.””
I stared.
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
“Then what did you know?””
Julian looked exhausted.
“I knew she was helping.””
“And you trusted her.””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
“Of course you did.””
I walked to the window.
Rain continued falling outside.
A storm that matched everything inside me.
“I trusted her too.””
My voice cracked.
“That’s the part that hurts.””
Julian said nothing.
Because there was nothing he could say.
A sound came from downstairs.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Rachel moved toward the window.
“There’s someone outside.””
Julian immediately looked alarmed.
“Who?””
She looked through the curtain.
Her face changed.
“It’s her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Chloe?””
Julian looked at me.
And I knew.
This was the moment.
No more messages.
No more hidden files.
No more people speaking around the truth.
The truth was walking toward the door.
A knock echoed through the house.
Three slow knocks.
Julian didn’t move.
Neither did I.
Then the door opened.
Because Chloe still had a key.
Of course she did.
She stepped inside.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes moved from Julian to Rachel.
Then stopped on me.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Chloe whispered:
“You found out.””
Not:
“What happened?””
Not:
“Are you okay?””
You found out.
Two words.
Two words that confirmed everything.
I felt something inside me break.
“How long?””
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“Clara…”
“How long have you been lying to me?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I walked closer.
“Tell me.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“Since before Leo was born.””
The room went silent.
Julian looked shocked.
“What?””
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want this.””
I stared.
“You didn’t want this?””
My voice shook.
“My son died.””
Tears fell down her face.
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t.””
Her expression changed.
Because she knew I was right.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You watched him suffer.””
“Yes.””
“You held my hand.””
Chloe started crying.
“I loved him.””
The words made me angry.
“Don’t.””
She froze.
“Don’t say that.””
“Clara—”
“Don’t use my son to make yourself feel better.””
The room became silent.
Chloe looked destroyed.
But I couldn’t stop.
Not anymore.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Why what?””
“Why did you bring Dr. Hale into our lives?””
She didn’t answer.
Julian stepped forward.
“Chloe.””
She looked at him.
Then at me.
“I thought I could help.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I was scared.””
“We were all scared.””
She wiped her face.
“My brother had the same condition.””
I froze.
“What?””
Chloe nodded.
“He died when he was five.””
The room went quiet.
Another child.
Another heart.
Another family destroyed.
“I met Dr. Hale because of him.””
Rachel looked confused.
“But why Leo?””
Chloe swallowed.
“Because Dr. Hale believed there was a pattern.””
“What pattern?””
She looked at Julian.
Then me.
“The Carter family.””
My stomach tightened.
“The Carter family?””
She nodded.
“He believed the condition in Leo wasn’t just genetic.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“You knew about the research.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him?””
Chloe looked down.
“I helped him find families.””
My blood ran cold.
Families.
Not patients.
Not children.
Families.
“You recruited people.””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t understand what he was really doing.””
“Then why hide it?””
No answer.
I stepped closer.
“Why sleep with my husband?””
That question broke her.
Because that was the one thing she couldn’t explain.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
“I was angry.””
“At me?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“At myself.””
The answer didn’t make sense.
“You betrayed me because you were angry at yourself?””
She cried harder.
“I hated that Leo reminded me of my brother.””
The words were horrible.
Not because they made sense.
Because they didn’t.
“He was suffering,” she whispered.
“And I couldn’t save him.””
I stared.
“So you tried to save Leo?””
“Yes.””
“But you hurt everyone.””
“I know.””
A long silence followed.
Then Julian spoke.
“Why did you leave the note?””
Chloe looked at him.
Her face changed.
“I didn’t.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I came here because Adrian contacted me.””
My heart raced.
“Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Chloe looked terrified.
“Because he found out something.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And placed it on the table.
“I was going to give this to Clara.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
Chloe whispered:
“The final report from Dr. Hale.””
Julian stepped forward.
“No.””
Chloe looked at him.
“You need to read it.””
I picked up the envelope.
My hands trembled.
Inside was one page.
One sentence was highlighted.
And when I read it, I felt the world stop.
*Patient Leo Carter’s condition was not the primary cause of death.*
I looked up.
My voice barely worked.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe whispered:
“It means Leo was getting better.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Julian.
He looked horrified.
Because he knew.
Or at least…
he knew enough.
And then Chloe said the words that shattered me completely.
“Leo wasn’t dying when you said goodbye to him.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why did he die?””
Chloe looked at the report.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because someone changed the treatment.””
