Chapter 7: The Night Leo Took His Last Breath

I read the message again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to understand the words.

*“Your husband was not alone in that room.””*

The room.

Not hospital room.

Not our bedroom.

Not home.

A specific room.

A room where my son had spent the last moments of his life.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Julian was staring at me.

He already knew.

He didn’t ask what Adrian wrote.

He didn’t need to.

“You were there.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Julian swallowed.

“Clara…”

“You were there.””

His eyes filled.

“I was.””

The answer landed harder than any lie.

Because I had spent months replaying that night in my head.

Every second.

Every breath.

Every sound.

And I had never imagined that Julian was keeping something from me.

I walked toward him.

“What happened?””

He looked away.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“Not this time.””

I held up my phone.

“Not another explanation that protects you.””

He closed his eyes.

“I’m not trying to protect myself.””

“Then who are you protecting?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Julian didn’t speak.

Rachel looked at him.

“Tell her.””

He looked at Rachel with anger.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Rachel replied quietly.

“I understand exactly.””

The tension between them told me there was more.

Something they had both carried.

Something they had both decided I wasn’t allowed to know.

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both of them looked at me.

“My son died.””

The words came out stronger than I expected.

“My four-year-old son died, and apparently everyone in this room knows a different version of what happened except me.””

My voice cracked.

“I want the truth.””

Julian looked at the floor.

Then he nodded.

“Leo’s condition got worse faster than anyone expected.””

I stared at him.

“That part I know.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You don’t.””

The words chilled me.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward the table and picked up one of the medical reports.

“The night Leo died, Dr. Hale was there.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“He came to the hospital.””

“Why?””

Julian hesitated.

“Because of the treatment.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“The treatment that failed?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you let him come?””

“I thought he could help.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You thought a man who had been experimenting on our son could help?””

Julian flinched.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough to hide it.””

He had no answer.

I looked at Rachel.

“Did you know?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The betrayal from her hurt differently.

Chloe had stabbed me in the heart.

Rachel had opened a wound I didn’t know existed.

“You were all there.””

Rachel looked down.

“I wasn’t in the room when Leo died.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

I turned away.

The pain was becoming too much to carry.

“Tell me what happened.””

Julian took a deep breath.

“That night, Leo stopped responding to the medication.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

The alarms.

The nurses rushing in.

The doctor telling us to wait outside.

I remembered Julian holding my shoulders while I screamed.

“I was there.””

“Yes.””

“But then they asked us to leave.””

Julian nodded.

“Because Dr. Hale wanted to try something.””

My eyes opened.

“Something?””

Julian didn’t speak.

“Julian.””

His face tightened.

“A final procedure.””

I felt sick.

“You agreed?””

“I thought it was our only chance.””

“You agreed.””

My voice broke.

“Without me.””

“I was terrified.””

“So was I!””

The words exploded out of me.

“I was his mother!””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“You sat beside me while I begged God to let me trade places with him.””

Tears burned my eyes.

“You watched me break apart.””

Julian looked devastated.

“And you made a decision about our son without me.””

He whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

But the apology came too late.

Too many times.

Too many secrets.

“What happened during the procedure?””

Julian looked at Rachel.

She nodded.

“You need to tell her.””

He looked exhausted.

“The procedure didn’t work.””

I closed my eyes.

A painful memory returned.

The doctor coming back into the room.

His face.

His silence.

The way he avoided looking at us.

“He died.””

Julian nodded.

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Then what am I missing?””

Julian didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“After Leo died, Dr. Hale took the records.””

My eyes snapped open.

“What?””

“He said he needed to analyze what happened.””

I stared at her.

“You let him?””

Julian’s face changed.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

“Then how did Leo’s records end up with him?””

Julian looked away.

And I understood.

Someone gave permission.

Someone had access.

Someone made choices.

“Julian.””

He finally looked at me.

“I signed something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“A transfer agreement.””

“For what?””

“To allow Dr. Hale to continue reviewing Leo’s case.””

I stared.

“You signed our dead son’s records away.””

“I was trying to understand why it failed.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to understand why you failed.””

His face collapsed.

Because maybe that was the truth.

Maybe he had spent years chasing an answer because he couldn’t accept losing Leo.

But in doing so, he destroyed everything around him.

I looked at my phone.

At Adrian’s message.

“Why is Adrian telling me this?””

Julian’s expression changed.

“He wants you to know.””

“Why?””

“Because he believes Dr. Hale covered something up.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Adrian found documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

She looked at Julian.

“About the procedure.””

My heart raced.

“Meaning?””

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“Meaning Leo’s final treatment may not have been an attempt to save him.””

The room went still.

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Dr. Hale may have been collecting data.””

The words felt impossible.

“No.””

Rachel looked devastated.

“I wish I was wrong.””

I looked at Julian.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Did you suspect?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped away from him.

“You suspected.””

“I didn’t know.””

“But you suspected.””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“You let my son become a test.””

“No.””

“You let him.””

“I was trying to save him!””

His voice broke.

The entire house went silent.

Then Julian whispered:

“I was trying to save him because I knew what it felt like to lose a brother.””

I looked at him.

And for one second, I saw the scared little boy he must have been.

A child watching another child die.

But then I saw Leo.

My Leo.

The little boy who loved dinosaurs.

The little boy who called strawberries “heart berries.””

The little boy who trusted every adult around him.

And my heart hardened again.

“Where is Adrian now?””

Julian looked surprised.

“I don’t know.””

“He contacted me.””

“He shouldn’t have.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Julian hesitated.

“Because if Adrian is talking…”

“What?””

His face went pale.

“He must have found the rest of the files.””

My phone buzzed.

All three of us looked at it.

Another message.

From Adrian.

This time, there was no text.

Only an attachment.

A video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

A small bed.

A child’s blanket.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the room.

I recognized the blanket.

I recognized the stuffed dinosaur sitting beside the pillow.

Leo.

The video was dated two days before he died.

And then a man walked into frame.

Dr. Hale.

He looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“Begin the final phase.””

My blood turned cold.

Then another person entered the room.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone I never expected to see.

Julian.

But he wasn’t standing beside Leo.

He was standing beside Dr. Hale.

Holding a document.

And signing it.

The video ended.

I looked up slowly.

My husband was crying.

But I couldn’t hear him.

I couldn’t hear anything.

May you like

Because the only thought in my mind was one terrifying question.

What exactly had Julian agreed to two days before our son died?
