Chapter 10: The Truth Leo Left Behind

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The words kept repeating in my head.

*Someone changed the treatment.*

Not a complication.

Not a disease that moved faster than anyone expected.

Not a heart that simply gave up.

Someone.

I looked at the people standing around me.

Julian.

Chloe.

Rachel.

Three people who had all been closer to the truth than I was.

Three people who had watched me fall apart while carrying pieces of a story I was never allowed to read.

My hands shook as I held the report.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

My voice grew louder.

“Who changed it?””

Julian stepped forward.

“Clara—”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore.””

The pain on his face was real.

But real pain didn’t erase what happened.

It didn’t bring Leo back.

“Tell me.””

Julian looked at Chloe.

Then Rachel.

Then finally at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

That answer.

Again.

The same answer that had haunted me all night.

But this time, I saw something different.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You really don’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then find out.””

My voice broke.

“Because I have spent months thinking my son died because his body was too weak.””

I held up the report.

“But now I find out he was improving.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I buried my child believing his own heart betrayed him.””

Nobody spoke.

“And now you’re telling me someone else did?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Rachel stepped forward.

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

One more thing.

“What?””

She looked at the report.

“The final treatment record was altered.””

My eyes opened.

“Altered how?””

“The original medication dosage was changed.””

Julian looked shocked.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“The amount administered was different from the approved protocol.””

I looked at Julian.

“You signed the authorization.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t change the treatment.””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Rachel looked at the report.

“There was a second authorization.””

My heart stopped.

“Again?””

She nodded.

“A second person approved the change.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Dr. Hale.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“Dr. Hale changed it?””

Rachel nodded.

“According to the records, yes.””

I felt numb.

“So he killed him.””

Julian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“I don’t think he wanted Leo to die.””

The anger returned.

“Then what did he want?””

Julian didn’t answer.

Chloe did.

“Results.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed the room.

“He wanted to prove his theory.””

I looked at her.

“What theory?””

She swallowed.

“That the Carter family’s condition could be controlled.””

Controlled.

Not cured.

Not saved.

Controlled.

My son had become an answer to a question.

A question nobody had the right to ask.

I looked at Julian.

“And you knew?””

His face collapsed.

“I suspected.””

The admission hurt.

More than if he had shouted.

“You suspected.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

He closed his eyes.

“After Leo died.””

My heart broke.

“After?””

“I found inconsistencies.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I tried.””

I laughed.

“You tried?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

His voice cracked.

“I confronted Dr. Hale.””

“And?””

“He threatened me.””

The room became still.

“What did he threaten?””

Julian looked toward Leo’s picture.

“He said if I went after him, he would make sure nobody believed me.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because I signed the documents.””

The guilt in his voice was unbearable.

“He said everyone would think I was the father who gave permission.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Julian wasn’t innocent.

But he wasn’t the monster I thought he was either.

He was a man who made desperate choices.

Then spent years drowning in the consequences.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“You should have let me fight with you.””

Tears rolled down his face.

“I know.””

The words came too late.

But they were true.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message from Adrian.

*“I’m outside.””*

My heart jumped.

I walked to the front door.

Julian followed.

“Clara, wait.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re walking into.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I opened the door.

“Neither did Leo.””

The rain had stopped.

Standing beneath the porch light was a man I had only seen in a photograph.

Older than Julian.

Tired.

But with the same eyes.

The same eyes Julian had.

Adrian Carter looked at me.

And for a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then his eyes moved past me.

Toward Leo’s picture inside the house.

His expression broke.

“He looked just like I did.””

My throat tightened.

“You knew him.””

Adrian nodded.

“I did.””

Julian stepped outside.

“Adrian.””

His brother looked at him.

A lifetime of pain passed between them.

“You lied to her.””

Julian looked down.

“Yes.””

“You let her believe Leo died because of his condition.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

Julian had no response.

Adrian looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I wiped my tears.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””

His face changed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would hate me too.””

The answer surprised me.

“Why would I hate you?””

“Because I was there.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“The night Leo died.””

Julian looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian looked at his brother.

“You didn’t know?””

Julian went pale.

Adrian looked back at me.

“I was there because Dr. Hale called me.””

My breath caught.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted me to see the results.””

Results.

Again that word.

“He wanted to prove his theory.””

I whispered:

“About Leo?””

Adrian nodded.

“But something went wrong.””

“What?””

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“Leo started recovering.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

“The treatment change was supposed to create a specific reaction.””

My stomach twisted.

“But Leo responded differently.””

Adrian looked devastated.

“He was fighting.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“My baby…”

Adrian continued quietly.

“When Dr. Hale realized the data was no longer useful, he changed everything.””

The world became silent.

“And Julian?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Julian arrived too late.””

I looked at my husband.

He was crying.

“I thought…”

His voice broke.

“I thought I failed him.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You didn’t kill him.””

Julian covered his face.

“But I helped create the situation.””

Nobody argued.

Because that was the truth.

Julian had made mistakes.

Big ones.

Painful ones.

But the person responsible for Leo’s death was not the man who loved him desperately.

It was the man who saw a child as an experiment.

Weeks later, the investigation began.

Dr. Hale’s records were uncovered.

The altered files were found.

The false signatures were exposed.

Chloe testified.

Rachel testified.

Adrian testified.

And Julian did too.

Not to save himself.

But to finally tell the truth.

The house remained mine.

The deed stayed in my name.

But I didn’t stay there.

Not because Julian told me to leave.

Because I chose to.

I moved somewhere smaller.

Somewhere quiet.

Somewhere with a garden.

And every spring, I planted flowers for Leo.

Blue ones.

Because he always said blue was the color of brave things.

Julian and I never became what we were before.

Some wounds don’t close.

They simply become scars you learn to carry.

But one year after Leo’s funeral, Julian came to my house.

He brought something.

A small blue plastic cup.

The same one Leo used every morning.

“I found it in the back of the cabinet,” he said.

I held it carefully.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Julian whispered:

“He loved us.””

I looked at the cup.

At the memories.

At the little boy who changed everyone who knew him.

“Yes,” I said.

“He did.””

And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t cry because I lost him.

I smiled because I had him.

Even if it was only for four years.

Even if the world was cruel enough to take him away.

Leo Carter existed.

May you like

He was loved.

And no secret, no lie, and no person could ever change that.
