Chapter 5: The Phone That Revealed The Enemy

The second phone in Elena’s hand looked heavier than it should have.

It was just a small black device.

No cracks.

No scratches.

Nothing unusual.

But the moment I saw it, I knew it carried a secret that had been sitting inside my house while I was busy believing lies.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Elena looked down.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than the phone itself.

“Elena.””

She swallowed.

“In Vanessa’s room.””

The air in the room changed.

I stared at the phone.

“You went through her things?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Then she corrected herself.

“I mean… I didn’t search her room. Not at first.””

“What happened?””

Elena sat down slowly.

“I noticed things.””

“What things?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Vanessa was always careful around you. But when you weren’t home, she became someone else.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What do you mean?””

“She received calls late at night. She would leave the house for hours and tell you she was visiting her sister.””

“I thought she didn’t have a sister nearby.””

“She doesn’t.””

That sentence landed like a stone.

Elena placed the phone on the table.

“Three weeks ago, I heard her arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because the last time I tried to warn you, you thought I was attacking her.””

I had no answer.

Because she was right.

I had turned every warning into jealousy.

Every concern into an accusation.

I had protected Vanessa from everyone.

Except the people who needed protection from her.

“Show me the phone.””

Elena unlocked it.

There was no password.

That alone felt wrong.

The home screen had one folder.

No name.

Just a blank icon.

Inside were dozens of photos.

My house.

My office.

My bank statements.

My family calendar.

My heart sank.

“She was tracking us.””

Emma stepped closer.

“Dad…”

I opened the next file.

A picture of Lily sleeping.

Taken from inside the nursery.

The date was two months earlier.

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Who took this?””

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I scrolled further.

There were messages.

Not many.

Most had been deleted.

But one conversation remained.

A contact named only with the letter M.

M.

The same person Vanessa’s phone had shown.

I opened it.

The last message was from yesterday.

*M: Did you handle the maid?*

Vanessa’s reply:

*V: Almost. Daniel finally believes she’s dangerous.*

My stomach turned.

Another message appeared.

*M: And the girl?*

*V: Emma is becoming a problem.*

I stopped.

Emma went silent beside me.

A father’s instinct is strange.

You can survive your own pain.

But when someone threatens your child, something inside you changes.

“What else?”” I whispered.

I kept scrolling.

Then I saw a message that made my blood run cold.

*M: Remember why we started this. The inheritance is only the beginning.*

Only the beginning.

Not the end.

I looked at Emma.

She looked terrified.

“What inheritance?””

Neither Emma nor Elena answered.

“Someone explain.””

Elena took a breath.

“Mr. Carter…”

She looked ashamed.

“I think Vanessa knew about your father’s trust fund.””

My father.

Before he died, he created a trust for Lily and Emma.

It wasn’t something I discussed often.

Very few people knew.

Only family.

Only people I trusted.

“Vanessa couldn’t know that.””

Elena looked at the phone.

“She knew.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, the garden lights were still on.

Everything looked peaceful.

That was the worst part.

A person could be destroying your life while your house still looked beautiful from the outside.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter.””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

A quiet laugh.

“You want to know who betrayed you.””

I looked at Emma.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored me.

“You should ask yourself why Elena found that phone so easily.””

My eyes moved toward Elena.

“What does that mean?””

The voice lowered.

“It means you still don’t understand the game.””

Then the call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Emma whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed at the phone.

“There’s a message.””

A text had appeared seconds after the call.

One sentence.

One name.

*The person who started this was never Vanessa.*

Underneath it was a picture.

A picture of someone standing outside my house.

May you like

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.
