Chapter 4: The Truth Behind Vanessa's Plan

The documents were spread across my kitchen table like pieces of a puzzle I didn’t want to solve.

Every page made my hands colder.

Every sentence made me question how I had missed it.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to become part of my family.

She was trying to control it.

The first document was a draft agreement.

My name.

My house.

My company.

Everything.

I looked at Emma.

“She had this?””

Emma nodded.

“I found it in her room.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

I stood up.

“You found this two months ago and said nothing?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

I stopped.

Because I finally understood.

Emma wasn’t hiding things because she didn’t trust me.

She was hiding things because she didn’t know if I would protect her.

That realization broke something inside me.

I sat back down.

“Tell me everything.””

Emma opened her laptop.

She showed me screenshots.

Messages between Vanessa and someone saved as “Mark.””

At first, they looked harmless.

Then I read them.

“She still trusts me. Once the marriage paperwork is complete, everything becomes easier.””

My stomach twisted.

“Who is Mark?””

“I don’t know.””

Another message appeared.

“Daniel is emotional. He’ll do anything for his daughters. We just need to make him believe the right person is the problem.””

I stared at the screen.

The right person is the problem.

The words felt familiar.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

She had made me look at Elena.

She had made me doubt my own daughter.

She had made me become angry at the one person who saved Lily.

The next morning, I went to find Vanessa.

She was staying at a hotel downtown.

When she opened the door, she looked surprised.

But not worried.

“You came.””

“I want answers.””

She smiled slightly.

“I knew you would.””

I walked inside.

“You tried to take my house.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

“You had legal documents prepared.””

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“You listen.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“You lived in my home.””

“I know.””

“You looked my children in the eyes.””

Her expression changed.

“Don’t make me the villain.””

I laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“You pushed my baby toward a staircase.””

“I didn’t.””

“You lied about Elena.””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

Vanessa looked away.

And that was when I saw it.

She wasn’t sorry.

She was calculating.

“Daniel,” she said quietly, “you really think Elena is innocent because of one video?””

I stared at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it matters.””

“What are you hiding?””

She didn’t answer.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Just for a second.

But I saw the name.

Mark.

Vanessa quickly turned the phone over.

Too late.

“Who is Mark?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“You should ask Elena.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“Maybe you should find out why your perfect maid knows more about your family than she told you.””

I left.

But the doubt stayed.

Because Vanessa had lied.

That was clear.

But what if she wasn’t lying about everything?

When I returned home, Elena was waiting in the living room.

She looked nervous.

“Mr. Carter.””

“Who is Mark?””

Her face changed instantly.

And that was all the answer I needed.

She knew that name.

“Where did you hear that?””

I stepped closer.

“Elena.””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“I was hoping you would never find out.””

I felt my heart sink.

“What were you hiding from me?””

Elena looked toward the staircase.

Toward Lily’s room.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Vanessa wasn’t the only person watching your house.””

She reached into her pocket.

And pulled out a second phone.

May you like

A phone I had never seen before.

“It’s time you saw who Vanessa was really working with.””
