Chapter 3: My Daughter's Secret

That night, nobody slept.

Lily finally fell asleep around midnight.

But the rest of us stayed awake.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same pictures hanging in the hallway.

But everything felt like a place I no longer recognized.

I sat in the kitchen with Emma.

She was drinking a glass of water she hadn’t touched in twenty minutes.

“Emma.””

She looked up.

“Yeah?””

“Why were you recording?””

She didn’t answer.

And that silence told me there was more.

“Sweetheart, I’m not angry.””

That wasn’t completely true.

I wasn’t angry at her.

I was angry that my family had secrets.

“I need to understand.””

Emma stared at the table.

Then she finally spoke.

“Because I knew something was wrong with Vanessa.””

I leaned back.

“Since when?””

“Since before Lily was born.””

I frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, you defended her.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

I thought about all the times Emma had been quiet when Vanessa entered the room.

All the times she disappeared upstairs during family dinners.

I had assumed she was being a teenager.

I never wondered if she was uncomfortable.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Emma took a deep breath.

“After Mom died, you were broken.””

My chest tightened.

Her mother.

My wife.

The woman we lost three years earlier.

“I know.””

“No, Dad. You don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“You wanted someone to help you. Someone to make the house feel normal again.””

I looked down.

“And Vanessa did that.””

“Yes.””

Emma nodded.

“At first.””

She told me things I didn’t know.

Small things.

Little moments.

Vanessa correcting her clothes.

Complaining about her grades.

Telling her she was “too sensitive.””

Then bigger things.

Vanessa reading private messages.

Moving family photos that included Emma’s mother.

Saying things like, “Your dad needs to stop living in the past.””

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you looked happy.””

That answer hurt more than anything.

“My happiness wasn’t worth you being afraid.””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know if you would believe me.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“What do you want?””

“I want you to know I’m sorry.””

I said nothing.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Emma.

She shook her head.

“She’s trying to control the story.””

I ignored Vanessa.

“You endangered my daughter.””

“No.””

“You lied.””

“I panicked.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because I thought I was losing everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You don’t see it, Daniel. You haven’t seen it for months.””

“Seen what?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Ask Emma what she’s been hiding from you.””

The call ended.

I looked at my daughter.

She looked terrified.

“Emma?””

She didn’t answer.

“Emma, what is she talking about?””

My daughter slowly reached into her backpack.

She pulled out an envelope.

A thick envelope.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Emma placed it on the table.

“It’s everything I collected.””

“Collected?””

“About Vanessa.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were printed messages.

Photos.

Documents.

And one picture that made my entire body freeze.

It was Vanessa standing outside a lawyer’s office.

Holding papers.

Papers with my name on them.

Emma whispered:

May you like

“Dad…”

“You need to see what Vanessa was planning to do after she married you.””
