Chapter 2: The Footage That Changed Everything

The video was only two minutes long.

But those two minutes destroyed the version of reality I had believed.

The footage came from the small security camera near the staircase.

A camera I had installed months earlier after Emma told me the corner was dangerous.

I had forgotten about it.

Vanessa clearly had too.

The video began with Elena carrying Lily into the living room.

Everything looked normal.

My daughter was smiling.

Elena was humming a song.

Then Vanessa entered.

She walked toward them.

I watched carefully.

At first, nothing seemed wrong.

Then Vanessa looked around.

Not at Lily.

Not at Elena.

Around.

Like she was checking if anyone was watching.

Emma stood beside me, silent.

I could hear my own breathing.

On the screen, Vanessa smiled.

“Give me the baby,” she said.

Elena handed Lily over.

Vanessa held my daughter for a moment.

Then she pointed toward the stairs.

“I need you to move the stroller upstairs.””

Elena looked confused.

“The stroller is already here.””

“Just move it.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Because I asked you to.””

Even through the video, I could feel the tension.

Elena hesitated.

Then she moved toward the stroller.

Vanessa placed Lily inside.

Then she stepped away.

I leaned closer.

Something was wrong.

I could feel it.

A few seconds passed.

Then Vanessa reached down.

Her hand touched the stroller handle.

And she pushed.

Not hard.

Not enough for someone across the room to notice.

But enough.

The stroller rolled forward.

Toward the stairs.

My stomach dropped.

“No,” I whispered.

On the screen, Elena turned around.

The moment she saw the stroller moving, her face changed.

She ran.

She didn’t think.

She didn’t hesitate.

She threw herself toward the stroller.

She grabbed Lily before the stroller could fall.

But the force sent Elena crashing onto the floor.

The vase beside the stairs shattered.

And that was the moment Vanessa started screaming.

The moment she created the story.

The moment she became the victim.

I stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing near the wall.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

I couldn’t believe how calm she sounded.

“You’re misunderstanding what happened.””

I stared at her.

“You pushed the stroller.””

“No.””

“I watched you.””

“She was unstable.””

Emma looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“She was unstable. I was trying to move it away from the stairs.””

“That’s not what happened,” Emma said.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re just a child.””

Emma’s expression hardened.

“And you’re a liar.””

The words hung in the room.

Vanessa looked offended.

But not shocked.

Like she expected someone to finally say it.

I lowered the phone.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“What?””

“Why would you do that?””

Her face changed.

For a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Anger.

Real anger.

Then she covered it.

“You’re accusing me because a teenage girl edited a video?””

Emma immediately stepped forward.

“I didn’t edit anything.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Daniel, think about this. Who has been here every day? Me.

Who helped you after Lily was born? Me.””

She pointed at Elena.

“And who is she? A maid who could lose her job.””

Elena looked down.

That hurt me.

Because I realized something.

I had believed the person with the better story.

Not the person who needed me to listen.

I walked toward Elena.

“Elena…”

She looked at me.

Her eyes were red.

“I told you the truth.””

I swallowed.

“I know.””

“No,” she said quietly.

“You know now.””

That hurt more because it was true.

I had already decided she was guilty.

I had already prepared to fire her.

Maybe even report her.

All because Vanessa cried first.

I turned back toward Vanessa.

“Pack your things.””

She froze.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“You’re kicking me out?””

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

Not a sad smile.

A dangerous one.

“You really think this is over?””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa walked toward the table and picked up her purse.

“You think that video tells the whole story?””

Emma frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“You should ask your daughter why she was recording in the first place.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Emma.

She looked away.

And suddenly, I had a new question.

Why was Emma filming Vanessa before anything happened?
