Chapter 8: The Stranger Who Stole His Name

For several seconds, Daniel Mercer could not move.

The voice coming from the speakers was his.

Not similar.

Not close.

His.

The same deep tone.

The same rhythm.

The same slight pause before certain words.

A voice that had comforted Nora during thunderstorms.

A voice that had promised Emily everything would be okay.

A voice that now belonged to a stranger.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The man standing beside Thomas Vale and Dr. Voss looked directly into the camera as if he could see through it.

As if he had been waiting for this moment.

“You finally found the truth.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

Not a cruel smile.

Something worse.

A familiar smile.

The kind Daniel had seen in old photographs of himself.

The kind people used when they knew they had already won.

“I’ve had many names.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“Give me one.””

The man tilted his head.

“You already know one.””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel Mercer.””

The room went silent.

Nora gasped.

“No.””

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay.

Not anymore.

The man on the screen continued.

“You spent years believing identity was something written on paper.””

His eyes moved slightly.

“Birth certificates.””

“Military records.””

“Marriage documents.””

“Photographs.””

He smiled.

“But identity is just information.””

Daniel felt disgust rise in his chest.

“You’re insane.””

The man laughed quietly.

“No.””

He looked almost offended.

“I’m proof.””

Thomas Vale stood beside him, silent.

Daniel noticed.

The older man was not in control.

That realization was important.

For the first time tonight, someone else looked afraid.

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“Vale.””

The man turned.

“Did you help him?””

No answer.

“Did you help him steal my identity?””

Vale’s jaw tightened.

The stranger answered for him.

“He helped create the opportunity.””

Daniel stared.

“Opportunity?””

“Yes.””

The stranger stepped closer to the camera.

“Your life was already valuable.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You were respected. Trusted. Connected.””

A pause.

“People believed you.””

Daniel felt cold.

“That was the point.””

The stranger smiled.

“If I looked like you, sounded like you, knew what you knew…”

His voice lowered.

“Who would question me?””

Nora covered her ears.

Daniel immediately moved toward her.

“Turn it off.””

Maya rushed to the controls.

But the screens wouldn’t respond.

The stranger continued.

“I didn’t steal your life, Daniel.””

He looked directly at Nora.

“I borrowed it.””

Daniel’s anger exploded.

“You stayed away from my daughter.””

The stranger’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

“You think I wanted to?””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Your wife made sure I couldn’t get close.””

The room went still.

Emily.

Again.

Always Emily.

The stranger looked down.

“She was smarter than I expected.””

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“What did you do to her?””

The man’s face hardened.

“I didn’t kill Emily.””

A pause.

“But I couldn’t let her expose everything.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Where is she?””

The stranger looked away.

For the first time, hesitation appeared.

“She’s closer than you think.””

Daniel felt his heartbeat change.

“What does that mean?””

The screens suddenly flickered.

The video froze.

Then a new image appeared.

A location.

A building.

An address.

Maya looked at it.

Her face changed.

“I know that place.””

Daniel turned.

“What is it?””

She swallowed.

“A private medical facility.””

“Where?””

“Outside the city.””

Daniel looked back at the screen.

The address remained.

A place nobody had mentioned.

A place hidden from the official records.

A place that suddenly felt like the center of everything.

The video resumed.

The stranger was gone.

Only Thomas Vale remained.

His face looked older.

More tired.

“You need to understand something,” he said.

Daniel stared.

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Vale shook his head.

“You understand what happened tonight.””

He looked toward Nora.

“You don’t understand what started it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

Vale was quiet.

Then:

“Emily discovered a program.””

“What program?””

“A project designed to recreate identities.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Vale looked away.

“For access.””

The answer was too simple.

Too terrifying.

A person who looked like someone else could enter places no one else could.

Sign documents.

Give orders.

Make decisions.

Daniel understood.

The military.

Hospitals.

Government systems.

Trust was a weapon.

And someone had learned how to copy it.

“Who created him?””

Vale looked at Dr. Voss.

Then away.

“I did.””

The room froze.

Daniel stared.

“You?””

Vale closed his eyes.

“I thought I was building security.””

“And you built a monster.””

Vale didn’t argue.

That scared Daniel more.

“What is his name?””

Vale looked at the screen.

“He doesn’t have one.””

“Everyone has a name.””

“Not him.””

Daniel waited.

Vale whispered:

“He was never supposed to become a person.””

The words felt unnatural.

Like describing a machine.

Not a human being.

Daniel looked at Nora.

A child had been caught between people who treated identity like a tool.

A child who had only wanted someone to believe her.

Then the door behind them opened.

Everyone turned.

A security officer stood there.

“Admiral.””

Daniel immediately moved in front of Nora.

“What?””

The officer raised his hands.

“I’m here to help.””

“Who sent you?””

The officer hesitated.

That was enough.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Who?””

The officer looked at Maya.

Then at the device on the table.

Then back at Daniel.

“Your wife.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s voice became a whisper.

“My wife is dead.””

The officer shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“She’s alive.””

The officer reached inside his jacket.

Maya immediately stepped back.

But he pulled out only an envelope.

Old.

Sealed.

With Daniel’s name written across the front.

Daniel recognized the handwriting instantly.

Emily.

Again.

The officer handed it to him.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I was supposed to give you this.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“How long have you had it?””

“Three years.””

“Why now?””

The officer looked toward the hallway.

“Because she said you would only believe it after you saw him.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few lines.

His eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

Because the message was not written to him.

It was written to Nora.

*My sweet girl,*

*If Daddy finds this, it means the person pretending to be him has finally been exposed.*

Daniel’s breathing stopped.

He kept reading.

*But there is something your father does not know yet.*

His hands began to shake.

The next line was underlined.

*The man wearing his face was not the first one.*

Daniel looked up slowly.

Maya saw his expression.

“What?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

He read the final sentence.

May you like

And felt the world fall apart again.

*There were three copies before him, and one of them is still inside your home.*
