Chapter 7: The Countdown Beneath Her Skin

The beeping was quiet.

That was what terrified Daniel the most.

Not a siren.

Not an explosion.

Not something dramatic enough to warn everyone.

Just a small, steady sound coming from somewhere near his daughter’s ear.

A sound only a few people in the room could hear.

A sound that meant something had started.

“Nora.””

Daniel dropped to his knees beside the bed.

His daughter looked at him with wide eyes.

“It’s getting louder.””

Maya moved immediately.

“Everyone step back.””

The doctors froze.

“What are you doing?”” Dr. Caldwell asked.

“Creating space.””

“For what?””

Maya looked at the device monitoring equipment.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared everyone more than anything else.

Daniel held Nora’s hand.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

She did.

“Are you hurting?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Are you scared?””

A small nod.

Daniel squeezed her fingers.

“I’m right here.””

Nora looked toward the dark screen of Emily’s video.

“Mommy said this would happen.””

Daniel looked up.

“What did she say?””

Nora swallowed.

“She said the numbers would wake up.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Numbers?””

Nora nodded.

“She said they were sleeping.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What else did she say?””

The little girl closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“She said if the numbers woke up, I had to find Daddy.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“I’m here.””

“No.””

Nora opened her eyes.

“She said find Daddy before he finds me.””

The words made no sense.

Then they did.

Daniel slowly looked around the room.

Someone had been searching for him.

Someone had known he would come here.

Someone had known exactly how tonight would unfold.

The hospital.

The doctors.

The device.

The phone calls.

Everything had been arranged.

A nurse entered the room suddenly.

“Doctor, we have a problem.””

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

She looked at Daniel.

“The security cameras in this section went offline.””

Caldwell frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“It happened three minutes ago.””

Maya looked at Daniel.

“Three minutes.””

The exact moment the countdown started.

Daniel stood.

“Lock the doors.””

Caldwell stared.

“Admiral—”

“Lock them.””

This time, nobody questioned him.

The door clicked shut.

Maya approached Nora.

“I need to examine the device again.””

Daniel nodded.

“Do it.””

She carefully adjusted the light.

The object was still hidden.

But now something had changed.

A tiny red glow appeared.

Maya’s breathing stopped.

“What?””

Daniel moved closer.

“What do you see?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

“Maya.””

The nurse looked at him.

“There’s a display.””

“A display?””

“Very small.””

“Showing what?””

Her face became pale.

“Numbers.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“What numbers?””

Maya leaned closer.

“Seven.””

Silence.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

The number changed.

Six.

Daniel watched.

Then five.

Maya stepped back.

“It’s counting down.””

Caldwell shook his head.

“That’s not possible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Stop saying that.””

The doctor went quiet.

Because impossible had become the only thing happening.

Daniel turned to Maya.

“Can you remove it?””

“I can try.””

“Try?””

She looked at him seriously.

“If it’s connected to anything deeper, forcing it could damage her ear.””

Daniel looked at Nora.

His daughter heard everything.

She was trying so hard to be brave.

The same way she had for years.

He hated that.

Children were not supposed to be brave because adults failed them.

“Do it carefully.””

Maya nodded.

The room prepared.

Tools opened.

Monitors activated.

Everyone watched the countdown.

Four.

Three.

Nora suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Daddy.””

“Yes?””

“I remember something else.””

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“The man who looked like you.””

Everyone stopped.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What about him?””

“He wasn’t alone.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who was with him?””

Nora looked at the doorway.

“At first I thought it was Mommy.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“She was standing behind him.””

Maya looked confused.

“But your mother was—”

“I know.””

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“But it looked like her.””

Daniel felt the world shifting again.

“Sweetheart, are you saying you saw your mother?””

Nora nodded.

“But something was wrong.””

“What?””

“She didn’t talk.””

The countdown continued.

Two.

Maya positioned the instrument.

“One more second.””

Daniel held Nora’s hand tighter.

Then—

The device stopped.

The red light disappeared.

Everyone froze.

Maya looked confused.

“What happened?””

Daniel stared.

The room remained silent.

Then the object released a tiny click.

A compartment opened.

Not outward.

Inward.

Like it had unlocked itself.

Maya carefully removed it.

The entire room held its breath.

The device was smaller than Daniel expected.

A tiny piece of technology.

But attached to it was something else.

A thin strip of material.

A piece of paper.

No.

Not paper.

A photograph.

Maya carefully unfolded it.

And everyone saw.

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

The photograph showed Emily.

Alive.

Standing beside a man.

A man Daniel recognized.

Because he had seen him only once.

In the mirror.

The man looked exactly like him.

Caldwell whispered:

“What is that?””

Daniel couldn’t answer.

Because the photograph proved something impossible.

Someone had created a copy of his identity.

Someone had been impersonating him.

And Emily had known.

Maya turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A message.

Three words.

Daniel read them silently.

Then aloud.

“Not your father.””

Nora immediately started crying.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

She pointed at the photograph.

“That’s what Mommy said.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She said the man who looked like Daddy wasn’t Daddy.””

Daniel stared.

“When did she say that?””

“Before she left.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Nora’s voice broke.

“Because she made me promise.””

Daniel softened.

“You can tell me now.””

She nodded.

“Mommy said someone would try to make me believe things that weren’t true.””

“What things?””

Nora looked at him.

“That Daddy was the bad guy.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

The man beside Emily.

His face.

His body.

His identity.

Someone had spent years building a lie.

But why?

Maya picked up the device.

“Admiral.””

“What?””

“There’s another compartment.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Inside?””

She nodded.

“There’s a second file.””

“Can you access it?””

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because it’s encrypted.””

Daniel looked toward the locked door.

“Then we find somewhere secure.””

Before anyone moved, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every monitor in the room turned on at the same time.

Not medical information.

A video.

A live feed.

Daniel stepped closer.

The screen showed a hallway.

The same hospital hallway outside.

Thomas Vale was standing there.

But he was not alone.

Beside him stood Dr. Voss.

And beside Dr. Voss stood another man.

Daniel stared.

Because the third man was the one from the photograph.

The man with his face.

The man who had pretended to be him.

The man Nora had feared.

Then the man on the screen looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

A voice came through the speakers.

A voice that sounded exactly like Daniel’s.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The voice continued.

“You finally found the truth.””

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

May you like

And answered:

“The person who has been living your life while you were busy mourning mine.””
