Chapter 6: The Message Hidden in the Past
Daniel Mercer stared at the note in his hand.
Seven words.
Seven impossible words.
*Daniel, if you’re reading this, I’m already gone.*
He knew the handwriting.
He knew the curve of the letters.
He knew the way Emily crossed her “t” slightly too high and pressed harder on the final stroke of every sentence.
He had spent years reading her grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Notes left beside his coffee.
Little reminders stuck to the refrigerator.
This was her.
Not a copy.
Not a forgery.
Emily.
His fingers trembled.
“Where did you find this?””
The nurse swallowed.
“Near the trash bin outside Treatment Room Seven.””
Daniel looked toward the room.
“That wasn’t there before.””
“No.””
“Who was near that area?””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“Dr. Voss.””
The name landed like a stone.
Daniel folded the note carefully.
“What exactly was he doing?””
“I don’t know.””
“Find out.””
The nurse nodded and hurried away.
Maya watched Daniel.
“You think he dropped it?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“No.””
“Then?””
“He wanted someone to find it.””
Maya frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the sentence again.
Because something about it bothered him.
Emily had never written like that.
Not unless she knew she might not get another chance.
“If you’re reading this…”
Not “I’m sorry.””
Not “I love you.””
Not “Take care of Nora.””
A warning.
A message designed for a specific moment.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Nora was watching him.
She was too quiet.
Too observant.
Like she had learned that adults often hid the truth behind gentle voices.
He walked back to her.
“Nora.””
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Did you see Mommy write something?””
The little girl hesitated.
Then nodded.
“When?””
“Before she left.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What do you mean before she left?””
Nora looked down.
“She told me not to tell anyone.””
Daniel sat beside her.
“Why?””
“She said people would say I was confused.””
The words cut deeper because they were true.
Everyone had been saying exactly that.
“Nora, I need you to tell me everything.””
She looked nervous.
“Even if it’s scary?””
“Especially if it’s scary.””
The little girl took a deep breath.
“She came to my room.””
“Like before?””
Nora nodded.
“But she was different.””
“How?””
“She looked tired.””
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
Nora stared at Mr. Whiskers.
“She said she made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She trusted someone.””
Daniel glanced at Maya.
“Who?””
Nora whispered:
“Uncle Michael.””
The room went cold.
Daniel immediately understood.
Dr. Michael Voss.
“Nora…”
“She said Uncle Michael wasn’t who he said he was.””
Daniel felt his anger rising.
“Did she tell you anything else?””
“She said if anything happened, I had to remember one thing.””
“What?””
Nora looked directly at him.
“Numbers.””
Daniel frowned.
“What numbers?””
“I don’t know.””
She touched her ear.
“But they’re inside.””
Maya immediately stepped closer.
“Inside the device?””
Nora nodded.
“She said the little thing would keep them safe.””
Daniel looked at Maya.
The nurse’s expression had changed.
“What?””
Maya was quiet.
“What is it?””
“The object may not just be a recording device.””
Daniel waited.
“It could contain encrypted data.””
Daniel stared.
“You mean information?””
“Yes.””
“Why would someone put information inside my daughter?””
Maya looked at Nora.
“Because nobody would think to search there.””
The answer made Daniel sick.
A child had been turned into a hiding place.
His daughter.
A seven-year-old girl.
He stood.
“We’re removing it.””
Maya looked surprised.
“You said Emily told you not to.””
“She also told me to protect Nora.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“And right now, protecting Nora comes first.””
The hospital moved quickly after that.
A private pediatric procedure room was prepared.
Security was increased.
Every person entering was logged.
Daniel insisted on being present.
No one argued.
Not after everything that had happened.
Before they moved Nora, Maya stopped him.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
“The object wasn’t visible during the first examinations because someone covered it.””
“With what?””
“A medical coating.””
Daniel frowned.
“Someone intentionally hid it?””
“Yes.””
“Who could do that?””
Maya looked away.
“Someone with medical knowledge.””
Daniel thought of Voss.
Then of Vale.
Then of the countless people who had looked into Nora’s ear and said nothing was there.
“How many people knew?””
Maya didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Too many.
Inside the procedure room, Nora held Daniel’s hand.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Will it hurt?””
Daniel forced a smile.
“No.””
“You promise?””
He paused.
Then answered honestly.
“I promise I won’t leave you.””
Nora nodded.
“That’s better.””
Those words almost broke him.
Because she wasn’t asking for the pain to stop.
She was asking not to be abandoned.
The doctors prepared.
Maya stood nearby.
The room was quiet.
Then the door opened.
Everyone turned.
A hospital administrator entered.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Who are you?””
The man showed an identification badge.
“Security oversight.””
Daniel looked at the badge.
Then at his face.
“You weren’t cleared for this room.””
The man smiled.
“I was.””
“By who?””
The man didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped between him and Nora.
“Leave.””
The man’s expression changed.
“Admiral Mercer, you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
Daniel stared.
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
The man lowered his voice.
“That device cannot be removed.””
“Why?””
“Because it isn’t only evidence.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What else is it?””
The man looked at Nora.
And for the first time, Daniel saw fear.
Real fear.
“It’s a trigger.””
The room froze.
Maya whispered:
“What?””
The man took one step back.
“You need to listen to me.””
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Explain.””
Before the man could answer, the lights went out.
The room disappeared into darkness.
Nora screamed.
“Daddy!””
Daniel reached for her.
“I’m here!””
Emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
The security oversight officer was gone.
The door was open.
And on the floor near the doorway was a small object.
A phone.
Daniel picked it up.
The screen was already unlocked.
One video file was open.
Created three years ago.
The title read:
*FOR DANIEL — PLAY ONLY IF NORA IS SAFE*
Daniel stared.
His hands shook.
Maya whispered:
“Who recorded it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
He pressed play.
The screen showed Emily.
Older than the last time he had seen her.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
Alive.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel…”
Her voice cracked.
“If you’re watching this, then they failed to stop you.””
Daniel couldn’t move.
Emily looked over her shoulder.
Like she was afraid someone was coming.
“I don’t have much time.””
She leaned closer.
“The thing inside Nora’s ear is not just a message.””
A pause.
“It’s a countdown.””
Daniel felt the room spin.
Emily continued.
“And when it reaches zero…”
The video glitched.
Her face distorted.
Then her voice returned.
Quiet.
Broken.
“Everyone who knows the truth will be in danger.””
The screen went black.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Nora touched her ear.
And whispered:
“Daddy…”
Daniel looked at her.
“It’s happening.””
His blood ran cold.
“What is?””
She looked toward the clock on the wall.
The digital numbers changed.
11:59.
Then:
12:00.
May you like
And somewhere inside the device hidden in his daughter’s ear…
Something began to beep.
