Chapter 8: The Truth Behind Emily’s Disappearance

The photograph burned in my hand.

Not because of what it showed.

Because of what it made me question.

Five years.

Five years of grief.

Five years of raising Lily alone.

Five years of believing my wife was taken from me.

And now Mark was standing there, planting another doubt.

That was his talent.

He didn’t need to force people.

He just needed to make them question themselves.

“Daniel,” Emily said softly.

I looked at her.

“Is it true?””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“What part?””

I held up the picture.

“This.””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Exhausted.

“His name was Thomas.””

Mark smiled.

“Tell him.””

Emily ignored him.

“Thomas worked with me.””

“Were you leaving me?””

The silence answered before she did.

“No.””

I looked away.

“Then why is there a picture?””

“Because he was helping me.””

“With what?””

Emily looked at Mark.

“With proving what Mark was doing.””

Mark’s smile disappeared.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You’re lying.””

Emily turned toward him.

“No. You are.””

She stepped forward.

“Thomas was an investigator.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“He was helping me track the missing money.””

Mark’s expression changed.

“He was going to expose you.””

Emily nodded.

“And that’s why you panicked.””

I looked between them.

“What happened that night?””

Emily took a deep breath.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

The words froze me.

“I was driving home after meeting Thomas.””

She looked at me.

“Mark followed me.””

Mark laughed.

“Ridiculous.””

“You knew I had proof.””

“I knew nothing.””

“You forced my car off the road.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Mark.

He didn’t look shocked.

He looked angry.

“That’s impossible.””

Emily continued.

“I survived.””

The room went quiet.

“Someone found me before the police arrived.””

“Who?””

“Sarah.””

I looked at Sarah.

She nodded.

“Emily was badly injured.””

“I thought I was going to die,” Emily whispered.

“Then why didn’t you come home?””

I hated that my voice cracked.

“Why did you leave me?””

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Because Mark found me.””

The room became silent.

“He came to the hospital.””

Mark looked away.

“He told me if I returned, Lily would be next.””

My daughter covered her mouth.

“He showed me pictures.””

“What pictures?””

“Pictures of you.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“He was watching our family.””

I felt sick.

Emily continued.

“He told me Daniel would never forgive himself if something happened to Lily.””

I looked at Mark.

The man standing in my house.

The man I called my brother.

“You threatened my wife.””

Mark’s expression hardened.

“She chose to run.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“She chose to protect our daughter.””

The silence was broken by a sound upstairs.

A floorboard.

Everyone turned.

My heart stopped.

“Lily?””

No answer.

I ran upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

Empty.

Then I saw something on the floor.

A piece of paper.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

Three words.

“Dad, hurry.””

Underneath was a location.

And one more sentence.

“He knows about the basement.””

I looked back toward the stairs.

The basement.

The place Mark had always told me was too dangerous to enter.

The place I hadn’t opened in years.

The place where Emily stored old family memories.

I ran downstairs.

“Where is Lily?”” Emily asked.

I looked at Mark.

“She found something.””

His face changed.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

I opened the basement door.

And from the darkness below, I heard a voice.

My daughter.

“Dad…”

Then another voice.

A voice that didn’t belong there.

A stranger’s voice.

“Finally.””

May you like

A pause.

“Now we can finish what your wife started.””
