Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Lie

I stared at the picture until my eyes hurt.

There was no mistake.

The photo was blurry, but the person standing beside the television was clearly Mark.

My brother.

The same man who had pointed at my daughter and said, “Ask her.””

The same man who had convinced me Lily was guilty.

My first reaction was anger.

Then confusion.

Then something much worse.

Shame.

Because my daughter had tried to tell me.

And I never listened.

I drove home faster than I should have.

The house was dark when I arrived.

For a moment, I hoped Lily would be sitting on the stairs.

I hoped this had all been some terrible misunderstanding.

But the house was empty.

Except for Mark.

He was sitting in my living room.

Waiting.

“You found the picture,” he said.

My blood turned cold.

“How did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You were there.””

Mark stood slowly.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

“Let me explain.””

“You lied to me.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“I understand enough.””

I held up my phone.

“You were standing right next to the TV.””

Mark looked at the screen.

Then sighed.

“She took that picture?””

“Why?””

For the first time, I saw something ugly in my brother’s expression.

Not anger.

Not regret.

Annoyance.

Like Lily was a problem.

“She’s been acting strange for months.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you destroyed my television?””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why are you here?””

Mark stepped closer.

“Because you need to hear the truth.””

I backed away.

“No. I need to hear Lily’s truth.””

His eyes narrowed.

“She’s manipulating you.””

Those words made something inside me snap.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“You don’t get to accuse my daughter after making me doubt her.””

Mark became quiet.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Emily knew.””

I froze.

My wife’s name hadn’t been spoken like that in years.

“What?””

“Before she died, she knew something was wrong.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you talking about?””

Mark looked toward the stairs.

“Lily never told you because Emily asked her not to.””

“Asked her not to tell me what?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“This is what I found in Emily’s things.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Read it.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My wife’s handwriting.

The first line made my knees weak.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Lily finally told you what happened.””

I couldn’t breathe.

I kept reading.

“Please don’t blame her. She tried to protect everyone, even when no one protected her.””

I looked up.

“Mark…”

He looked away.

And suddenly, I understood.

My brother wasn’t just hiding something.

He was terrified.

“Tell me the truth,” I whispered.

Mark stayed silent.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked it up.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Even from a distance, I heard the panic.

Mark listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

His hand lowered.

“She found Lily.””

My entire body went cold.

“Who found her?””

Mark swallowed.

Then said a name I hadn’t heard in years.

“Sarah.””

My wife’s old friend.

The woman who disappeared after Emily’s funeral.

The woman everyone said had left town.

I stepped closer.

“Where is my daughter?””

Mark looked at me with fear in his eyes.

“She’s at the hospital.””

I grabbed my coat.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because Lily didn’t run away from home.””

A long silence filled the room.

“She ran because she was afraid someone would find her first.””
