Chapter 8: The Husband Who Sold Our Future

I sat completely still.

For a moment, the conference room disappeared.

All I could hear was Daniel repeating the name.

Ethan Miller.

My ex-husband.

The man who had once promised to love me forever.

The man who had kissed my forehead before leaving for work.

The man who had held my hand during our first ultrasound and cried when we heard Grace's heartbeat.

Then, seven months into my pregnancy, he had packed a suitcase and disappeared.

His last message had been short.

I'm sorry, Danielle. I can't do this anymore.

No explanation.

No conversation.

Just an empty closet and a half-paid rent bill.

Now I was being told that he might have been involved in stealing my inheritance.

“Where is he?”” I asked.

Daniel glanced at my father.

“Martin says Ethan was seen entering a private office building this morning. He's currently trying to confirm the address.””

I stood.

“I want to see Martin.””

Dad nodded.

“Daniel, bring him inside.””

Within ten minutes, a thin man in his early sixties entered the conference room.

He wore a dark brown suit and carried a leather briefcase.

His face looked exhausted.

“Mr. Brooks,” he said.

Dad approached him.

“Martin.””

They shook hands.

Martin looked at me.

“Miss Brooks?””

“Yes.””

He bowed his head slightly.

“I'm sorry for what has happened.””

I didn't sit down.

“Did you meet my ex-husband?””

Martin looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He opened his briefcase and removed several documents.

“Because he contacted me three months ago claiming to represent your interests.””

I stared at him.

“Ethan said he represented me?””

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“What did he want?””

Martin placed a document on the table.

“He wanted information about the trust, including the beneficiary certificate and the conditions attached to your voting rights.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Why would you give him access?””

“I didn't. I refused to provide confidential documents without your authorization.””

Martin looked at me.

“But he claimed you had asked him to help.””

I shook my head.

“I haven't spoken to Ethan in months.””

Martin nodded.

“I know that now.””

He opened another folder.

“He also presented a document that appeared to authorize him to act on your behalf.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Was it signed by Danielle?””

Martin shook his head.

“No. It was signed by someone claiming to be her legal representative.””

Dad frowned.

“Who?””

Martin looked at the page.

“Patricia Cole.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“The former assistant whose account was used to submit the amendment?””

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Was Patricia working with Ethan?””

Martin nodded.

“Based on the communications I reviewed, it appears so.””

My hands started shaking.

I sat down.

“Why would my husband do this?””

Martin took a breath.

“Miss Brooks, I don't know what he told you about your separation. But I believe he was financially involved with people who wanted access to the trust.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered the final months of my marriage.

Ethan had become secretive.

He started receiving late-night calls.

He would leave the room to answer them.

When I asked who was calling, he said it was work.

One night, I found a printed email on the kitchen counter.

It mentioned a company called Miller Strategic Consulting.

Ethan told me it was a potential client.

I hadn't thought about it since.

“Dad,” I whispered, “did you investigate Ethan before he left me?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't have enough evidence at the time. I knew he was involved in conversations with people connected to Charles, but I couldn't establish exactly what they were planning.””

I stared at him.

“So you knew something was wrong, and you let me marry him?””

Dad looked devastated.

“I didn't know he was going to abandon you. I thought I could protect you without interfering in your marriage.””

I felt tears gather.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

Martin cleared his throat.

“There's something else.””

He removed a printed email from his briefcase.

“This was recovered from a deleted account associated with Patricia Cole.””

Daniel read it.

Then he handed it to my father.

Dad's expression darkened.

The email was dated two weeks before Ethan left.

It contained a discussion about a proposed transfer of voting rights.

The sender was Patricia.

The recipient was an address associated with Ethan's consulting company.

One sentence stood out.

Once Danielle is no longer living with Richard's direct financial support, she may become more willing to accept the temporary management arrangement.

I stared at the words.

They had planned to make me vulnerable.

They had expected that leaving me alone with a newborn would make me easier to manipulate.

My father placed the paper down.

“Did Ethan receive money?””

Martin nodded.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“According to the records, approximately seventy-five thousand dollars.””

I felt sick.

“Seventy-five thousand?””

Martin nodded.

“Paid through two consulting invoices.””

I looked toward Grace.

My daughter was sleeping peacefully.

She had no idea that the man who helped create her had apparently accepted money from people trying to control her mother's inheritance.

“Did he know about the trust?”” I asked.

Martin nodded.

“He knew enough to understand that you were the beneficiary.””

“Did he know I was pregnant?””

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

My father reached for my hand.

“Danielle.””

I pulled away gently.

“I'm okay.””

I wasn't.

But I didn't want anyone to mistake my tears for weakness.

I looked at Martin.

“Where is Ethan now?””

Martin hesitated.

“He contacted me this morning. He wants to meet you.””

“Why?””

“He says he has the original beneficiary certificate.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Why would he have it?””

Martin opened another folder.

“Because Evelyn gave it to him.””

Dad stood.

“Are you certain?””

Martin nodded.

“I have a photograph of the handover.””

He showed us a security image.

It depicted Evelyn entering a parking garage.

Ethan stood beside a black sedan.

She handed him a large envelope.

I stared at the image.

There was no mistaking him.

The same dark hair.

The same posture.

The same expensive watch I had bought him for our second anniversary.

My throat tightened.

“He's been meeting her?””

“Yes,” Martin replied.

“For how long?””

“According to the available records, at least four months.””

I covered my mouth.

Four months.

That meant he had been working with my aunt while I was trying to recover from childbirth.

While I was learning how to feed Grace.

While I was waking every two hours to change diapers.

He had been helping them steal something that belonged to our daughter.

My father stood beside me.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to meet him.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Yes, I do.””

Dad studied my face.

“Are you sure?””

“I want to hear him explain why he abandoned us.””

My father nodded.

“Then we'll do it safely.””

Martin took out his phone.

“I can arrange the meeting.””

“Where?”” Dad asked.

“Here. In the private conference suite.””

Daniel immediately contacted security.

Within fifteen minutes, Ethan arrived.

When the door opened, I felt my heart stop.

He looked almost exactly as he had the last time I saw him.

Same dark hair.

Same brown eyes.

Same expensive cologne.

He wore a gray sweater and a black coat.

But his smile was gone.

His eyes immediately found mine.

“Danielle.””

I didn't answer.

He looked at Grace.

“Is that her?””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Her name is Grace.””

He nodded.

“She looks healthy.””

I stared at him.

“Don't.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“Don't pretend you care about her now.””

His jaw tightened.

“That's not fair.””

I laughed.

“Fair?””

My voice trembled.

“You left me seven months pregnant. You stopped paying rent. You blocked my number. You didn't even ask whether she was born safely.””

Ethan looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made decisions.””

He took a step toward me.

Dad immediately moved between us.

“Stay where you are.””

Ethan raised his hands.

“Richard, I just want to talk.””

Dad's expression was cold.

“You lost the right to approach my daughter without her permission.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Can we please speak privately?””

“No.””

He sighed.

“Fine.””

Then he opened his briefcase.

“I brought the document.””

He removed a sealed envelope.

Martin immediately recognized it.

“That's the original beneficiary certificate.””

Ethan nodded.

“That's right.””

Daniel reached for it.

Ethan pulled it back.

“Not so fast.””

Dad looked at him.

“What do you want?””

Ethan glanced toward me.

“I'm willing to return everything.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Everything?””

“The certificate. The emails. The communications with Evelyn.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because I don't want to get dragged into a legal investigation.””

Dad's voice became colder.

“Then you should have considered that before participating in one.””

Ethan ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Danielle, I know you hate me. But I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

He swallowed.

“Evelyn promised me that if the amendment went through, I'd receive enough money to start over.””

I stared at him.

“You sold your family for money?””

“I was drowning in debt.””

“So was I!””

He flinched.

I continued.

“I was pregnant. I had medical bills. I was terrified. And you left me to deal with everything alone.””

Ethan looked genuinely ashamed.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

He placed the envelope on the table.

“I'll give you the certificate. I'll testify against Evelyn and Charles. But I need something in return.””

Dad crossed his arms.

“What?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I want to see my daughter.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me break.

“You want to see Grace?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“She deserves to know her father.””

I looked at the sleeping baby.

For a moment, I imagined her growing older.

Asking where her father was.

Wondering why other children had someone waiting at school pickup.

But I also imagined her discovering that he had abandoned her before she was even born.

And that he had returned only when money became involved.

“You don't get to use her to negotiate,” I said.

Ethan's expression hardened.

“I'm her father.””

“Then you should have acted like one.””

He looked at my father.

“Richard, you can't keep me away from her forever.””

Dad answered calmly.

“Custody and visitation will be handled through the proper legal process. Nothing will be decided in this room.””

Ethan looked frustrated.

Then he pushed the envelope toward Daniel.

“Take it.””

Daniel examined the seal.

But before he could open it, Ethan leaned closer to me.

“There is something else you should know.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“Evelyn didn't arrange the hotel incident because she was afraid you'd meet Martin.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Ethan glanced toward the door.

“Because Victoria was supposed to take something from you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Ethan looked at my diaper bag.

I instinctively pulled it closer.

He whispered:

“Your mother's wedding ring.””

I froze.

I had been wearing my mother's ring on a thin chain beneath my sweater.

It was the only thing I had left of her.

I looked at Ethan.

“How do you know about that?””

He swallowed.

“Because Charles told Victoria it was the key to proving that your grandfather's final trust amendment was legitimate.””

Dad immediately turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened.

Then he looked at my father.

“Sir, we have a problem.””

“What?””

Daniel glanced at me.

“The security director has reviewed the footage from the lobby.””

“And?””

“Victoria wasn't just approaching Danielle.””

He enlarged a still image.

Victoria's hand was reaching toward the necklace beneath my sweater.

I instinctively touched my chest.

Daniel continued.

“She was trying to remove something.””

Dad's face went pale.

“Was she carrying a weapon?””

“No, sir.””

“Then what?””

Daniel zoomed in on the image.

A small silver object was visible between Victoria's fingers.

It looked like a tiny key.

Ethan suddenly stood.

“That's it.””

Dad turned toward him.

“What is it?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The key to your mother's safety deposit box.””

I stared at him.

My mother's safety deposit box had been closed since she died.

My father had told me there was nothing important inside.

But now Ethan was saying something else.

“What's in that box?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

Then he answered.

“The original letter your grandfather wrote explaining why he left the trust to you.””

My father slowly turned toward Daniel.

“Get security to find Victoria.””

Daniel nodded.

May you like

But Ethan added one final sentence.

“It's too late. Charles already has the second key.””
