Chapter 3: The Husband Who Knew My Father

Robert Hale wasn't the kind of man who looked intimidating at first glance.

He was probably in his late fifties, with carefully styled gray hair, a broad forehead, and a perfectly tailored black suit.

His shoes were polished.

His watch was expensive.

And his smile looked practiced.

He approached my father with his right hand extended.

“Richard. I wasn't expecting to see you here.””

Dad shook his hand.

“Neither was I.””

Robert glanced at me.

Then at my daughter.

Then at the red mark on my cheek.

His smile faded.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Robert, thank goodness you're here. This woman has been making accusations against me.””

Robert looked at her.

“What happened?””

“She was being disruptive, and I asked her to leave. Then she started shouting at me.””

I stared at her.

“That isn't what happened.””

Victoria waved her hand dismissively.

“She became hysterical.””

Robert looked at my father again.

“Richard, I'm sure we can resolve this privately.””

Dad's eyebrows lifted.

“Privately?””

“Yes. There's no reason to turn an unfortunate misunderstanding into a public spectacle.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

My father had spent his entire life teaching me that people often revealed their character when they believed nobody important was watching.

Robert was revealing his now.

“Mr. Hale,” Dad said, “my daughter was slapped in your wife's presence. She was then ordered to leave by the manager. I would like to establish what happened before discussing anything privately.””

Robert glanced at Victoria.

“Did you actually hit her?””

Victoria's mouth fell open.

“Robert!””

“I'm asking you a question.””

“She was disrespectful!””

“That's not what I asked.””

Victoria looked furious.

“She got in my face!””

I shook my head.

“I was holding my baby. I never touched you.””

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“Victoria, what were you thinking?””

She looked at him as though he had betrayed her.

“Are you seriously taking her side?””

“I'm trying to understand what happened.””

“No. You're embarrassing me.””

Dad watched the exchange without saying anything.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mr. Brooks, I've contacted the hotel's security director. He's retrieving the relevant footage.””

Robert stiffened.

“There's no need for that.””

Dad turned toward him.

“Why not?””

Robert forced a smile.

“Because I know Victoria. If she says there was a misunderstanding, I believe her.””

I couldn't stop myself.

“You didn't even ask me what happened.””

Robert looked at me.

“I'm sure you have your perspective.””

“My perspective is that your wife hit me while I was holding my newborn.””

Victoria made an irritated noise.

“Oh, stop saying that!””

Dad moved slightly in front of me.

“That's enough.””

Robert exhaled.

“Richard, let's be reasonable. You have a business reputation to consider. I have one too. We don't need a minor disagreement becoming a corporate issue.””

Dad's eyes hardened.

“Your wife struck my daughter. You are standing here asking me to consider your business reputation.””

Robert lowered his voice.

“I'm asking you to consider the bigger picture.””

“The bigger picture is that a woman should be able to sit in a hotel lobby without being assaulted.””

Robert looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victoria made another mistake.

She pointed at me.

“Why is she even here? She doesn't look like someone who can afford this hotel.””

My father slowly turned his head.

I saw his jaw tighten.

“Mrs. Hale,” he said, “you have no idea what my daughter can afford.””

Victoria laughed.

“I can see perfectly well.””

Dad nodded.

“Apparently, you can see clothes. Unfortunately, you seem unable to see people.””

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

“Victoria, please stop talking.””

She stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“Just stop.””

But Victoria was too angry to recognize that the situation was slipping away from her.

She gestured toward the lobby.

“I have stayed here dozens of times. I know the staff. I know the management. I have spent more money in this building than she could make in ten years.””

Marcus stood behind the reception desk, looking as though he wanted to disappear.

Dad turned toward him.

“Mr. Reed, how long have you worked at this property?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Six years, sir.””

“And during those six years, have you ever received training on handling allegations of physical assault?””

“Yes.””

“Were you trained to remove the person reporting the assault without first investigating?””

Marcus looked down.

“No, sir.””

“Then why did you do it?””

Marcus glanced at Robert.

I noticed the movement.

So did Dad.

“Mr. Reed?””

Marcus cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Hale is a regular guest. I was familiar with her, and I believed—”

“You believed her because you knew her?””

“I believed I could calm the situation.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“By ordering my daughter to leave.””

Marcus didn't answer.

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

“Sir, security has the footage.””

Dad looked at him.

“Have they reviewed it?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The footage confirms Ms. Brooks's account.””

Victoria immediately snapped.

“That is impossible!””

Daniel continued.

“The camera facing the reception desk clearly shows Mrs. Hale approaching Ms. Brooks, speaking to her, and striking her across the face.””

Robert turned toward his wife.

“Victoria?””

She looked furious.

“I didn't hit her that hard!””

The words came out before she could stop herself.

Silence swallowed the lobby.

I stared at her.

My cheek still hurt.

But somehow, hearing her admit it felt worse than hearing her deny it.

“You just admitted it,” I whispered.

Victoria's face changed.

“I meant—”

Daniel looked down at his tablet.

“The recording also shows Ms. Brooks stepping away and shielding her infant immediately afterward.””

My father closed his eyes for a second.

When he opened them, his voice was almost unnervingly calm.

“Mr. Reed, I want that footage preserved. I also want a copy of every incident report connected to Mrs. Hale's previous visits.””

Robert frowned.

“Previous visits?””

Dad turned toward him.

“Yes.””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“Why would that be necessary?””

“Because I want to understand whether this is an isolated incident or part of a pattern.””

Victoria let out a sharp laugh.

“You cannot investigate me like I'm some criminal!””

Dad looked at her.

“No one has called you a criminal.””

“Then why are you treating me like one?””

“Because you are refusing to take responsibility for your actions.””

Robert stepped between them.

“Richard, let's take a breath.””

Dad nodded.

“I agree. Let's take one.””

He turned toward Daniel.

“Please explain the situation with the development agreement.””

Robert's expression changed immediately.

“Richard, I don't think this is the time.””

“Actually, I think it's exactly the time.””

Daniel opened a document on his tablet.

“Mr. Hale's company has submitted a proposal for the redevelopment of the waterfront property owned by our group.””

I glanced at my father.

I knew he owned hotels and commercial buildings, but I had never paid much attention to the details.

Dad continued.

“Robert, your company requested a meeting with our investment committee next week.””

Robert nodded.

“Yes. We're hoping to finalize the partnership.””

“And your wife knows about this?””

Robert looked at Victoria.

“She knows I have business meetings.””

Victoria frowned.

“Why are we discussing business?””

Dad answered.

“Because your husband is asking me to resolve an incident privately while simultaneously seeking a major business partnership with my company.””

Robert's face tightened.

“You're not suggesting you would let a personal disagreement interfere with a professional decision.””

“I'm suggesting professional decisions should be based on integrity.””

Robert looked irritated.

“That's a convenient word when you're the one holding the money.””

Dad smiled without warmth.

“No, Robert. Integrity is convenient when you have it. It's expensive when you don't.””

I looked down at Grace.

She was asleep again.

Her tiny fingers curled around the edge of my sweater.

I wanted to leave.

I didn't care about Robert's development proposal. I didn't care about Victoria's diamonds or Marcus's excuses.

I wanted to take my daughter home, close the curtains, and forget this day had happened.

“Dad,” I whispered, “can we go now?””

His expression softened immediately.

“Of course.””

He turned toward Daniel.

“Arrange the car.””

Daniel nodded.

But before we could move, Marcus approached.

“Mr. Brooks?””

Dad turned.

“Yes?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Miss Brooks, I owe you an apology.””

I didn't respond.

He continued.

“I should have listened to your account before making a decision. I should have reviewed the footage immediately. I was wrong to ask you to leave.””

His voice sounded sincere.

But I couldn't forget how easily he had believed Victoria.

“You didn't just make a mistake,” I said.

“You watched me stand here with a newborn while someone who hit me smiled because you were taking her side.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I understand.””

“No,” I replied quietly.

“I don't think you do.””

He swallowed.

My father placed a hand gently on my shoulder.

“That's enough for today.””

We began walking toward the entrance.

Victoria suddenly called after us.

“Richard!””

Dad stopped.

She approached, her heels clicking against the marble.

“I think there has been enough drama. I would appreciate an apology for the way you've treated me.””

I turned around.

I couldn't believe she was serious.

My father looked at her for a long moment.

“An apology?””

“Yes. Your comments have been insulting.””

Dad glanced at my cheek.

Then at Grace.

Then back at Victoria.

“Mrs. Hale, if you want an apology, perhaps you should start by offering one to the woman you struck.””

Victoria's mouth tightened.

“I am not apologizing to her.””

“Then we have nothing more to discuss.””

He turned away.

Robert stepped forward.

“Richard, wait.””

Dad paused.

Robert lowered his voice.

“Please. Let's not destroy a potentially valuable relationship over this.””

My father looked at him.

“Robert, you are the one who needs to decide what kind of relationship you want to have with people. I am simply deciding what kind of people I am willing to do business with.””

He walked toward the entrance.

I followed.

But just as we reached the glass doors, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

“Price.””

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

My father turned.

Daniel covered the microphone.

“Sir, it's the hotel security director. He's found something else in the footage.””

Dad frowned.

“What else?””

Daniel listened again.

Then he looked toward Marcus.

“Apparently, Mrs. Hale wasn't the only person involved in the incident.””

Victoria stiffened.

Robert looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel ended the call.

He glanced at his tablet.

“The security director says Mrs. Hale entered the hotel earlier this afternoon and spoke privately with Mr. Reed before approaching Ms. Brooks.””

Marcus went completely pale.

Dad slowly turned toward the manager.

“Is that true?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

No sound came out.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Marcus, don't you dare—”

She stopped herself.

But it was too late.

My father had heard enough.

“Daniel,” he said, “bring the security director down here. I want to know exactly what happened before my daughter arrived.””

Robert looked at his wife.

“Victoria, what did you do?””

She stared at him.

“Nothing!””

But her hands were trembling now.

Daniel tapped his tablet and enlarged a still image from the security recording.

It showed Victoria standing behind the reception desk.

Marcus was beside her.

And between them was a small white envelope.

Dad studied the image.

“What is that?””

Daniel zoomed in.

“The security director believes it's an envelope exchanged between Mrs. Hale and Mr. Reed.””

Marcus looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Victoria suddenly raised her voice.

“This is ridiculous! That envelope has nothing to do with Danielle!””

My father looked at her.

“Then you shouldn't have any problem explaining what's inside it.””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel received another message.

He read it twice.

His expression turned serious.

“Sir, the security director has identified the contents.””

Dad waited.

Daniel lifted his eyes.

“It's a written instruction concerning Ms. Brooks.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Concerning me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently, someone requested that hotel staff prevent you from entering the property today.””

I stared at Marcus.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked at Robert.

And Robert suddenly seemed more frightened than angry.

Dad's voice dropped.

“Mr. Reed, who authorized that instruction?””

Marcus's lips trembled.

“I... I was told it was a request from someone connected to the ownership office.””

Daniel frowned.

“That's impossible. No such instruction was authorized by our office.””

My father stepped closer.

“Then who told you to do it?””

Marcus looked at me.

His eyes filled with panic.

Then he whispered something that made my father go completely still.

“Someone called this morning and said Ms. Brooks was no longer welcome at any Brooks-owned property.””

I felt my heart pounding.

My father slowly turned toward me.

“Danielle, sweetheart, have you ever received a call from someone claiming to represent my company?””

I shook my head.

“No. Why?””

Dad looked at Daniel.

“Find out who made that call.””

Daniel nodded.

Then Marcus added one more sentence.

And this time, even Victoria looked shocked.

“Sir, the person who gave me the instruction said it came directly from your family.””

My father didn't move.

For the first time that afternoon, I saw something in his expression that wasn't anger.

It was fear.

May you like

Because someone had used my father's name to make sure I would never feel welcome in his own hotel.

And whoever that person was, they knew exactly who I was.
