Chapter 9: The Choice Between Blood and Truth

The photograph on my phone felt heavier than it should have.

A single image.

A single moment.

A single piece of evidence that could destroy everything I thought I knew.

Adrian Kane standing outside a hospital.

Holding a document with my name on it.

I stared at him.

He didn’t try to explain immediately.

That was the worst part.

Because when innocent people are accused, they rush to defend themselves.

They fight.

They deny.

They demand to be believed.

Adrian just stood there.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

“You knew.””

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

I looked away.

“Tell me everything.””

The basement was silent.

Even Elena stepped back.

Giving us space.

Adrian walked toward one of the old tables and placed both hands on it.

“I found you eleven years ago.””

My throat tightened.

“Eleven?””

“Yes.””

“That means…”

“I was nineteen.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You found me when I was still a kid.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

His expression changed.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“Everyone always says that.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“Everyone who hurts people says they were protecting them.””

Adrian accepted the anger.

He didn’t fight it.

“My father died two months before I found the file.””

“What file?””

“The one proving you existed.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about me before?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“My father hid everything from me.””

“Then how did you find it?””

“Because Marcus tried to destroy it.””

The name made the room colder.

“I found documents showing my father had a daughter.””

He looked at me.

“Not just a daughter.””

A pause.

“An heir.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“My father believed blood mattered more than loyalty.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“He built his entire empire around that belief.””

I looked down.

“So you found me because of inheritance?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I found you because you were alone.””

I didn’t believe him.

Not completely.

“Then why didn’t you help me?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because when I found you…”

His voice became quieter.

“You were happy.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You were living behind a small bookstore.””

A memory surfaced.

A winter morning.

A woman who owned the store giving me leftover coffee.

“You watched people from outside.””

My eyes widened.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I watched you.””

The confession made my skin crawl.

“I saw you laugh.””

I said nothing.

“I saw you make friends.””

“I didn’t have friends.””

“You did.””

His voice softened.

“The old woman at the bookstore. The man who gave you blankets. The little girl who always shared her lunch.””

My chest tightened.

People I thought were random moments.

He remembered.

“I realized something.””

“What?””

“You had built a life without us.””

The basement became quiet.

“And I was afraid.””

That surprised me.

“Afraid of what?””

“That if I walked into your life and told you who you were…”

He looked at me.

“I would destroy the only thing you had.””

I wanted to stay angry.

I tried.

But the truth was complicated.

And complicated was harder than hate.

“So you just watched?””

“Yes.””

“For years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice broke slightly.

“Because I loved my brother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your father.””

The words felt wrong.

“My father?””

“Richard Kane.””

Adrian swallowed.

“He was a terrible man.””

I waited.

“But he was still my brother.””

The honesty hurt.

Because I understood.

Family was not simple.

People could love someone and still hate what they did.

“I found out Marcus killed your mother three years after I found you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

“And still nothing?””

“I needed proof.””

“You needed proof while I lived on the street?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

The answer was awful.

Because it was honest.

“I was wrong.””

The words were barely audible.

“I thought knowing the truth would save you.””

He looked at me.

“But I was protecting a secret.””

A noise came from above.

Everyone turned.

Elena immediately reached for her weapon.

“We have company.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“How many?””

“Too many.””

The building shook.

A distant explosion.

Not enough to destroy.

Enough to send a message.

James wasn’t hiding anymore.

Adrian looked at me.

“You need to leave.””

I laughed.

“Again?””

“This time I mean it.””

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Wren.””

“I spent my entire life running.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m done.””

The basement door opened.

Marcus Vale stood there.

Blood on his sleeve.

A gun in his hand.

Everyone froze.

Adrian moved instantly.

“Marcus.””

The older man looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not controlled.

For the first time, he looked human.

“You finally know the truth.””

Adrian’s voice was ice.

“You killed Evelyn.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed the room.

I couldn’t breathe.

Adrian looked like he had been stabbed.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Richard was going to take her from me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“She was my daughter.””

Silence.

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Richard Kane wasn’t your father’s only secret.””

Adrian stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“Evelyn was my daughter.””

My mind struggled to understand.

“She was your sister?””

Marcus nodded.

“And Wren…”

He looked at me.

“You are the last person who carries her blood.””

The lights flickered.

Then every screen in the basement turned on.

James Kane appeared.

Smiling.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?””

Everyone looked up.

James continued.

“Twenty years of lies finally collapsing.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“James.””

His uncle smiled.

“You always thought you were the hero.””

A pause.

“But you were just another Kane.””

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

A hospital room.

A young woman.

My mother.

Alive.

My breath stopped.

She was holding a baby.

Me.

Then she looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“If Adrian ever finds her…”

My heart froze.

“Tell him the truth.””

The video stopped.

A final message appeared.

*The real enemy was never the Kanes.*

Then the screen went black.

A second later, James spoke.

“It was the man who saved you.””

Everyone looked at Adrian.

And I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The final secret wasn’t who I was.

It was why Adrian Kane had been searching for me all along.
