Chapter 10: The Name I Choose

For ten years, I thought my biggest fear was being forgotten.

I was wrong.

My biggest fear was being remembered for the wrong reason.

The video kept replaying in my mind.

My mother’s face.

Her voice.

The way she looked at the camera like she knew someone would eventually find me.

But the one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about was the last sentence.

The man who saved you.

I looked at Adrian.

“Explain.””

He didn’t move.

“Wren.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

Everyone was waiting.

Even Marcus.

Even Elena.

Adrian finally spoke.

“When I found your file, there was another document.””

“What document?””

“One written by your mother.””

My heart stopped.

“What did it say?””

He looked at me.

“She named me your guardian.””

Silence.

“What?””

“She trusted me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew Richard would never protect you.””

I stared.

“But you said you didn’t know me.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why you?””

“Because Evelyn knew my father.””

He looked down.

“She knew I was different from him.””

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

“My mother chose you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide?””

His face broke.

“Because the document had one condition.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Evelyn didn’t want you raised as a Kane.””

I understood.

“She wanted me free.””

“Yes.””

“And you failed.””

The words hurt both of us.

“Yes.””

The basement was silent.

Then Marcus spoke.

“You still don’t understand.””

Everyone looked at him.

His gun lowered.

“I wasn’t trying to kill Evelyn.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You admitted you killed her.””

“Yes.””

He looked destroyed.

“But not because Richard ordered me.””

“Then why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because she asked me to.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Richard was coming for you.””

A tear moved down his face.

“She knew she couldn’t escape with you.””

My hands trembled.

“So she chose death?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She chose your life.””

The words hit differently.

“She made me promise.””

He looked at the floor.

“Promise that if Richard found you, I would erase every record.””

My voice became quiet.

“Why?””

“Because Richard would use you.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Your father believed you were the key to everything.””

“What everything?””

Marcus looked at the screens.

“The Kane empire.””

Then he looked at me.

“Your mother owned half of it.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Before Richard took control, Evelyn inherited your grandfather’s company.””

Adrian stared.

“She was the rightful owner.””

Marcus nodded.

“Richard built his empire by stealing hers.””

The truth finally came together.

The inheritance.

The documents.

The lies.

Everyone had been fighting over me because I wasn’t just a person.

I was proof.

A living reminder of what they had stolen.

James appeared on the screen again.

“You’re all so dramatic.””

Adrian turned.

“You.””

James smiled.

“Did you really think I would let this end?””

The basement doors locked.

Elena checked her weapon.

“Security is down.””

James laughed.

“I spent twenty years preparing for this.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Why?””

“Because Richard took everything from me.””

His smile faded.

“My family.””

“My power.””

“My future.””

He looked at me.

“And then he created you.””

I felt cold.

“You don’t hate me.””

“No.””

James smiled.

“I envy you.””

The answer shocked me.

“You were the only person Richard ever feared.””

“Why?””

“Because Evelyn loved you more than she loved power.””

The room became quiet.

James continued.

“And that was the one thing Richard could never control.””

A sound came from behind him.

A door opening.

Someone entered the room where James was.

Everyone froze.

Then the camera moved.

Showing a woman.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

My breath disappeared.

No.

It couldn’t be.

“Mom?””

The woman looked directly at the camera.

Then whispered:

“Wren.””

I couldn’t move.

My entire body stopped.

Adrian looked at me.

Marcus dropped the gun.

Nobody spoke.

Because the dead woman from my memories…

The woman I had mourned without knowing her face…

Was standing alive.

James looked terrified.

For the first time.

Because he wasn’t in control anymore.

My mother stepped closer to the camera.

And said the words that changed everything.

“Wren, I’m sorry.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I had to let you believe I was gone.””

My hands covered my mouth.

“Because the only way to save you…”

She looked at Adrian.

“…was to make everyone believe you had no family left.””

The screen cut.

The basement exploded into chaos.

But I didn’t hear the alarms.

I didn’t hear the shouting.

I only heard one thing.

My mother was alive.

Years later, people would ask me when my life changed.

Some would say it was the night I saved Adrian Kane in that alley.

Others would say it was the moment I discovered I was connected to the most powerful family in New York.

They were wrong.

My life changed the moment I stopped running.

Because I finally understood something.

I wasn’t a lost girl.

I wasn’t a forgotten daughter.

I wasn’t a weapon.

I was Wren.

The girl who saved a dying man.

The girl who survived every secret thrown at her.

The girl who chose compassion when the world taught her cruelty.

And Adrian Kane?

The man everyone wanted dead?

He was the first person who finally understood that I didn’t need saving.

I needed the truth.

May you like

And when I finally found it…

I saved myself.
