Chapter 5: The Man From Her Past

The man standing in my living room looked like someone who had spent years carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

He was older than Isabella.

Late forties, maybe early fifties.

His dark coat was soaked from the rain outside, and his eyes moved carefully around the room before settling on her.

Not me.

Not my mother.

Her.

"Daniel..."" Isabella whispered.

For the first time since I had discovered her lies, I saw something real on her face.

Fear.

Not the fake fear she had shown the police.

Not the dramatic tears she had used to manipulate everyone.

This was different.

This was the expression of someone seeing a ghost.

I stepped between my mother and Isabella.

"Who are you?""

The man looked at me.

"My name is Daniel Reeves.""

The same name from the photo.

The same name from the messages.

The man Isabella had told me destroyed her life.

I clenched my jaw.

"You were the one who sent me the video.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Isabella laughed bitterly.

"So that's your plan?""

She looked at him.

"Destroy me after everything I did for you?""

My eyes narrowed.

Everything she did for him?

"What does that mean?""

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

"Before I explain, you need to understand one thing.""

He looked at my mother.

"Your mother was never the person who betrayed my family.""

Silence.

My mother stared at him.

"Daniel...""

He shook his head.

"No. She deserves to know the truth now.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Old company documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

My father's signature appeared on several pages.

But the documents weren't what caught my attention.

It was the final page.

A photograph.

My father.

Daniel's father.

And another woman.

A woman I recognized.

Isabella's mother.

I looked up.

"What is this?""

Daniel sat down slowly.

"The beginning of the lie.""

Isabella crossed her arms.

"Don't listen to him.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You're still doing it.""

"What?""

"Still pretending you're the victim.""

Her expression hardened.

"You don't know what I had to do.""

Daniel laughed quietly.

"No. I know exactly what you did.""

I looked at Isabella.

"What is he talking about?""

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Daniel opened another document.

"Twenty-five years ago, my father was accused of stealing money from Carter Industries.""

I nodded.

"My mother told me.""

"No.""

Daniel's voice became sharper.

"Your mother told you the version she could live with.""

My mother looked away.

My stomach tightened.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Daniel took a breath.

"My father discovered someone inside the company was moving money through fake accounts. He was preparing to expose them.""

"Who?""

Daniel looked at Isabella.

"Her mother.""

The room froze.

Isabella's face went pale.

"No.""

Daniel continued.

"Your father discovered it too.""

I looked at my mother.

She looked devastated.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked down.

"Your father wanted to report it. But before he could, the evidence disappeared.""

"And your father was blamed.""

Daniel nodded.

"Everyone believed he stole the money.""

I looked at Isabella.

"But why would you blame my mother?""

Daniel's expression softened.

"Because someone made sure we believed the wrong person.""

He turned toward Isabella.

"She made sure everyone believed Evelyn Carter was involved.""

My mother whispered:

"I was trying to protect my husband.""

Everyone looked at her.

She covered her face.

"I knew someone was framing people inside the company. I knew Richard was innocent.""

Richard.

My father's name.

"But I didn't know who.""

She looked at Daniel.

"I found out years later.""

"And you never told me?"" I asked.

The pain in my voice made her close her eyes.

"I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"That you would hate your father.""

The answer confused me.

"My father?""

She nodded.

"Because the night before he died, he discovered the truth.""

My heartbeat slowed.

"What truth?""

My mother looked at Isabella.

"That her mother wasn't working alone.""

Isabella stepped backward.

"No.""

My mother continued.

"Someone helped her.""

Daniel stared at Isabella.

"Your mother couldn't have done it without access.""

A cold feeling spread through me.

I already knew the answer.

But I didn't want to hear it.

"Who helped her?""

My mother whispered:

"Someone inside my family.""

The room went silent.

Then Isabella spoke.

"You still don't understand.""

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Just tired.

"I didn't come into your life because I wanted your money.""

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

"Really?""

She looked at me.

"I came into your life because of what your father did.""

"Then why the marriage?""

"Because I needed access.""

The honesty shocked me.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Isabella.""

But she continued.

"I needed proof.""

I stared at her.

"You almost killed my mother for proof?""

Her eyes flickered.

"I didn't plan for her to die.""

"You pushed her into a jacuzzi.""

"I wanted her scared.""

The words cut deeper because she said them calmly.

Like she still believed fear was acceptable.

My mother looked at her.

"You became exactly like them.""

Isabella flinched.

"Don't.""

"You did.""

The anger in my mother's voice surprised me.

"You hated what they did to your family, but you became someone who hurt innocent people to punish the guilty.""

Isabella looked away.

For a moment, I saw the person I thought I loved.

A broken woman.

A wounded woman.

But then I remembered my mother underwater.

And I remembered Isabella stepping on her fingers.

The front door suddenly opened.

A woman entered.

She was older.

Elegant.

Confident.

And when Isabella saw her, every bit of color left her face.

"Mother.""

My entire body went still.

Because I recognized her.

Not personally.

From the documents.

From the old company photos.

From the name printed on every page.

Victoria Reeves.

The woman who had started everything.

She smiled.

"Hello, Nathaniel.""

My mother stood immediately.

"How did you get in?""

Victoria looked around the penthouse.

"Still asking the wrong questions, Evelyn.""

She placed a small envelope on the table.

Then she looked at Isabella.

"You failed.""

Isabella stared at her.

"You told me you had everything under control.""

Victoria smiled.

"No, darling.""

She walked closer.

"I told you what you needed to hear.""

The silence afterward felt dangerous.

Because Isabella looked at her own mother the same way I had looked at Isabella.

Like she was finally seeing the stranger behind the mask.

Victoria turned toward me.

"You want the truth about your father?""

She tapped the envelope.

"Read this.""

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence written in my father's handwriting.

My hands began to shake.

*If anything happens to me, trust Evelyn. She knows the real traitor.*

I looked at my mother.

And she whispered:

May you like

"I tried to tell you.""

Then the lights in the penthouse went out.
