Chapter 10: The Family I Chose

Nobody moved.

The gun in Victoria's hand wasn't shaking.

That was the terrifying part.

She wasn't desperate.

She wasn't afraid.

She looked calm.

Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

"Victoria," Daniel whispered.

She smiled.

"Daniel.""

Her eyes moved to Isabella.

"You disappointed me.""

Isabella stepped forward.

"You used me.""

Victoria tilted her head.

"No.""

Her voice was cold.

"I gave you purpose.""

The anger on Isabella's face was immediate.

"You destroyed my life.""

Victoria laughed softly.

"Your life was destroyed before you were born.""

I stepped between them.

"Enough.""

Victoria looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something strange.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

"You look like him.""

I didn't answer.

"You have Thomas's eyes.""

My hands curled into fists.

"You killed him.""

She smiled.

"That is what everyone believes.""

Daniel moved forward.

"Because it's true.""

Victoria sighed.

"Still searching for heroes and villains.""

She looked at me.

"But the world isn't that simple, Nathaniel.""

"No.""

I stared at her.

"But people who try to kill my mother are.""

Her smile disappeared.

A small crack in her confidence.

"Your mother told you everything?""

"Enough.""

She looked disappointed.

"She always was weak.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Victoria laughed.

"You still protect him.""

"Yes.""

"Even after Thomas?""

The room went silent.

My mother looked at her.

"You don't get to say his name.""

Victoria's expression changed.

"You think you loved him more than me?""

My mother shook her head.

"No.""

She looked at Victoria.

"I think you never loved him at all.""

The words hit harder than a scream.

Victoria's face hardened.

"You took everything from me.""

"No.""

My mother answered.

"You couldn't accept that he chose someone else.""

For the first time, Victoria looked truly angry.

She raised the gun.

Daniel moved immediately.

But I stepped forward.

"Why?""

Everyone looked at me.

I stared at Victoria.

"If you hated my family so much, why didn't you just expose the truth?""

She was silent.

"Why create lies?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Because the truth wasn't enough.""

"What?""

She smiled.

"The truth would have only ruined Richard.""

She pointed the gun slightly.

"I wanted everyone to suffer.""

And there it was.

The confession.

Not justice.

Not revenge.

Cruelty.

She wanted pain.

My phone was recording.

I had started it when she entered.

I watched Daniel notice.

A tiny movement.

A silent understanding.

Victoria continued.

"Richard took everything from me.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"He chose someone else.""

Her expression changed.

"You sound just like him.""

"Good.""

The word surprised her.

"Because he was a better person than you.""

For a second, nobody moved.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Victoria looked toward the window.

Her face changed.

"You called the police?""

Daniel smiled.

"No.""

He held up his phone.

"I called them.""

Victoria looked at him.

"You?""

"Yes.""

Her expression broke.

Because she finally understood.

Everyone she manipulated had stopped being afraid.

She looked at Isabella.

"You betrayed me.""

Isabella stared at her.

"No.""

Her voice was calm.

"I stopped being you.""

Victoria lowered the gun slightly.

That was the moment Daniel moved.

The police entered seconds later.

Victoria was arrested.

And for the first time in twenty-five years, the truth belonged to everyone.

Six months later, the Carter family name was cleared.

The old company records were corrected.

Thomas Reeves was remembered not as a criminal, but as the man who tried to expose corruption.

My father, Richard Carter, was remembered for what he truly was.

A man who chose love over blood.

A man who raised a child because he wanted to.

Not because he had to.

My relationship with Isabella ended.

Some wounds cannot be repaired by understanding them.

I forgave her eventually.

But forgiveness did not mean forgetting.

It meant letting go.

Daniel and I stayed in contact.

We were connected by something neither of us chose.

But maybe family isn't always the people you are born from.

Maybe family is the people who choose you when they know the truth.

My mother moved into a smaller home near the ocean.

She planted flowers in the garden.

Pink tulips.

The same flowers I had carried the night everything changed.

One evening, I visited her.

We sat outside watching the sunset.

"You still miss him?""

I asked.

She smiled softly.

"Every day.""

"Richard?""

She looked at me.

"Both of them.""

I understood.

Some people leave behind pain.

Some people leave behind love.

And sometimes they leave behind both.

Before I left, my mother handed me a small envelope.

"What is this?""

"Something your father left for you.""

"Which one?""

She smiled.

"Both.""

Inside were two letters.

One from Richard.

One from Thomas.

I opened Richard's first.

Only one sentence was written.

*A father is not the man who gives you life. A father is the man who spends his life giving you his.*

I cried before I finished reading.

Then I opened Thomas's letter.

His words were shorter.

But they changed me forever.

*Nathaniel, I never got the chance to hold you. But I need you to know this: you were loved before you ever took your first breath.*

I folded the letters carefully.

For years, I believed my life was built on lies.

But I finally understood something.

The lies were real.

The betrayal was real.

The pain was real.

But so was the love.

And that was the truth nobody could take from me.

Not Victoria.

Not Isabella.

Not anyone.

May you like

Because in the end, I wasn't defined by the secrets people hid from me.

I was defined by the people who stayed when the secrets came out.
