Chapter 8: The Letter My Mother Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did my father.

The house was silent except for the sound of papers moving.

Old papers.

Old memories.

My father sat at the kitchen table surrounded by boxes from the attic.

I watched him pull out photographs.

My mother’s handwriting.

Birthday cards.

Things I hadn’t seen since I was twelve.

“Dad?””

He looked up.

His face was exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

The words confused me.

“For what?””

“For keeping things from you.””

I sat down.

“About Mom?””

He nodded.

My chest tightened.

“What did Denise find?””

My father looked at the box in front of him.

“I don’t know.””

That scared me.

Because my father always knew what to do.

Always.

But now he looked lost.

“She took things after your mother died.””

“What things?””

“Documents.””

“Why?””

“I thought she was organizing the house.””

I stared.

“And you never checked?””

He looked away.

“No.””

That answer hurt.

Because it sounded familiar.

My father trusted people.

And people kept hurting him.

He searched through the box.

Then he found something.

An envelope.

Old.

Yellow.

With my name written on it.

My heart stopped.

“That’s from Mom.””

My father nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know this existed.””

I touched the envelope.

My hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My eyes filled before I even read the first sentence.

My sweet Maya,

If you are reading this, something happened that made you need answers.

I stopped breathing.

My father looked away.

Giving me privacy.

The letter was short.

But every word felt like my mother was sitting beside me.

She wrote about loving me.

About being scared.

About wanting my father to protect me.

Then I reached the last paragraph.

And my heart broke.

Maya,

There is something I never told your father because I was afraid of what it would do to our family.

Denise knows.

That sentence made my blood run cold.

I kept reading.

Before I married your father, I discovered something about Denise’s past. I tried to warn people, but nobody believed me.

My hands trembled.

What past?

The letter continued.

She was not honest about why she wanted to become part of our family.

She knew your father before he met her.

Not through friendship.

Not through coincidence.

She knew about his money.

She knew about his company.

She knew about me.

I looked up.

My father was watching my face.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

I handed him the letter.

He read.

The color drained from his face.

“No.””

I whispered:

“Dad…”

He kept reading.

Then he stopped.

At the bottom of the page was a sentence that made him stand.

If anything happens to me, look into how Denise entered our lives.

My father dropped the letter.

Because suddenly, the problem wasn’t just money.

It wasn’t just forged signatures.

It wasn’t just medical neglect.

It was something much older.

Something that started before I ever knew Denise.

Then my father’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone toward me.

There was one sentence.

I know you found the letter. Now you need to know what really happened to Maya’s mother.

My blood turned cold.

Because underneath the message was a name.

May you like

A name I never expected.

Denise.
