Chapter 3: The File Denise Wanted Hidden
Denise stopped pretending.
That was the moment everything changed.
Her perfect smile disappeared.
Her calm voice disappeared.
The woman who had spent six years acting like she was the victim finally looked like someone who had been caught.
“That’s ridiculous,” she said.
My father stared at her.
“You requested my daughter’s medical records?””
“I was helping.””
“Helping?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
“You were always gone!””
The accusation shocked me.
Because Denise said it like my father’s hard work was the problem.
Like building a future for us was something she resented.
My father laughed quietly.
“So my absence gave you permission?””
Denise looked away.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Marcus suddenly stood.
“Mom, what did you do?””
Denise looked at him.
“Sit down.””
“No.””
His voice surprised everyone.
“I’m serious. What did you do?””
For years, Denise’s children had followed her instructions.
But now they were seeing the truth.
And truth changes people.
Denise pointed at me.
“She has always caused problems.””
I felt my chest tighten.
My father immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.””
“No, Arthur. You need to hear this. Maya has always been jealous.””
My father stared.
“Jealous?””
“Yes.””
“She was twelve years old when her mother died.””
The room went quiet.
Denise looked uncomfortable.
“She never accepted me.””
My father’s voice became softer.
“That’s because you never accepted her.””
The sentence destroyed her argument.
Because everyone knew it.
Even her children.
Tasha sat down slowly.
“Mom…”
Denise looked at her.
“What?””
Tasha whispered:
“Why did you use Maya’s emergency money?””
My father turned.
“What money?””
I looked at Tasha.
“What are you talking about?””
She covered her mouth.
Too late.
My father stood.
“Tasha.””
She looked terrified.
“Tell me.””
Tasha glanced at Denise.
Then she whispered:
“After Maya’s hospital visit, the school counselor helped her apply for an emergency assistance fund.””
I blinked.
“What?””
Tasha nodded.
“It was supposed to cover medical testing.””
My father looked at Denise.
“And?””
Tasha’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mom took the paperwork.””
The room went completely silent.
My father slowly walked toward the kitchen counter.
“Where are the papers?””
Denise didn’t answer.
He looked at her.
“Where are my daughter’s medical assistance papers?””
“I don’t know.””
My father opened a drawer.
Then another.
Nothing.
Denise stepped forward.
“You’re invading my privacy.””
He looked at her.
“My daughter’s health is not your privacy.””
Then he opened the cabinet beneath the desk.
Inside was a folder.
My father pulled it out.
I recognized it immediately.
The school logo.
My stomach turned.
He opened it.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He handed me the paper.
My hands shook.
It was an approval notice.
The emergency fund had been approved.
The amount was enough to cover every test I needed.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
A note from Denise.
“Family finances have changed. Cancel request.””
My knees almost gave out.
“She canceled it.””
My father looked at Denise.
“You canceled medical care for my daughter?””
Denise’s eyes flashed.
“I was trying to manage expenses.””
“For my child?””
“For the household!””
My father picked up the folder.
“Then why did you buy Tasha a nine-hundred-dollar bag the same week?””
No answer.
“Why did Marcus get new shoes?””
Silence.
“Why did Jordan get a gaming chair?””
Nothing.
Then Denise said something that made even her own children look away.
“Because they needed those things.””
My father stared at her.
“And Maya didn’t?””
Denise didn’t respond.
My father took my hand.
“We’re leaving.””
Denise stepped forward.
“You can’t just walk away.””
My father looked at her.
“Yes, I can.””
He grabbed his keys.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He answered.
A few seconds later, he looked at me.
“Maya.””
I knew something was wrong.
“What?””
He ended the call.
“The doctor’s office.””
My heart raced.
“What did they say?””
My father swallowed.
“They reviewed your old test results.””
I waited.
May you like
Then he said:
“They found something they missed.””
