Chapter 8: The Man From My Mother's Past

The knock came three seconds after Denise's words ended.

Nobody moved.

Not me.

Not my father.

Not even Michael, who stood frozen beside the kitchen table.

The sound came again.

Three slow knocks.

My father's eyes moved toward the front door.

"Maya.""

I looked at him.

"Stay behind me.""

I almost smiled.

Because even after everything, even after the secrets and betrayal, my father was still my father.

Still protecting me.

He walked to the door.

His hand rested on the handle.

Then he opened it.

The man standing outside looked nothing like my father.

He was taller.

Older.

Gray touched his hair.

But his eyes...

His eyes looked familiar.

The stranger looked past my father.

And saw me.

His expression broke.

"Maya?""

I couldn't speak.

The man swallowed.

"I know you probably don't know who I am.""

My father stepped forward.

"You're Daniel.""

The man's face changed.

"Yes.""

My father's jaw tightened.

"What do you want?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I wanted to meet my daughter.""

The word felt strange.

Daughter.

I had spent years wishing for a mother.

Not another father.

Not another person with complicated history.

But there he was.

A person connected to me.

A person everyone had hidden.

"I didn't know where you were," Daniel said.

I stared.

"What?""

He looked hurt.

"Your mother told me she would contact me after she figured things out.""

My father frowned.

"What things?""

Daniel looked at him.

"She was pregnant.""

The room went quiet.

"I wanted to be involved.""

My father stared.

"Then why weren't you?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because Denise told me your mother didn't want me around.""

My stomach dropped.

Again.

Her name.

Always her name.

"What?""

Daniel looked at me.

"After your mother died, I tried to find you.""

My father stepped closer.

"How?""

"I contacted the hospital.""

His expression darkened.

"But someone had changed the records.""

Nobody needed to say who.

We all knew.

Denise had spent years controlling information.

Controlling access.

Controlling people.

Daniel reached into his coat pocket.

"I brought something.""

He handed me an envelope.

I looked at my father.

He nodded.

I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Old letters.

My mother's handwriting.

The first line made my breath stop.

"If anything happens to me, I need Maya to know the truth.""

I couldn't read anymore.

Not yet.

I held the letter against my chest.

Daniel looked away.

"I kept copies because I was afraid.""

My father asked:

"Afraid of what?""

Daniel looked toward the house.

"Of Denise.""

The name felt poisonous.

"What did she do?""

Daniel was quiet.

Then he answered:

"She threatened me.""

My father froze.

"With what?""

Daniel looked at me.

"With taking Maya away.""

The truth kept arriving in pieces.

Each one worse than the last.

My father sat down.

Like his body couldn't hold all of it anymore.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You need to leave before you learn what your father really did.*

My blood went cold.

I showed my father.

His face changed.

"Who sent that?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel looked at the message.

Then his expression changed.

"That number...""

"What?""

He stared at the screen.

"I've seen it before.""

My father stood.

"Where?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

And whispered:

"From Denise's lawyer.""

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly there was a new question.

Not what Denise had done.

Not what she had hidden.

But why someone was still trying to protect her.

My father grabbed his phone.

And before he could call anyone, another message appeared.

This time, it wasn't a warning.

It was a photo.

A photo of my mother.

Taken the week before she died.

May you like

And standing beside her...

was Denise.
