Chapter 7: The Name That Was Removed

The next morning, my father placed a folder on the kitchen table.

I recognized it immediately.

My birth certificate.

Except something was different.

My hands became cold before I even touched it.

"Open it," my father said.

I looked at him.

"Are you sure?""

He nodded.

"No more secrets.""

I opened the folder.

The paper inside looked official.

Normal.

Except for one thing.

The section where my biological father should have been listed was blank.

I stared.

"My original certificate had a name.""

My father looked at me.

"What?""

"My mother told me.""

I swallowed.

"She said my birth certificate had both names.""

My father took a breath.

"Then Denise changed it.""

The room felt silent.

"Why?""

My father didn't answer.

Because neither of us knew.

Until the lawyer arrived.

His name was Michael Reynolds.

He had represented my father for business matters for years.

But that morning, he looked uncomfortable.

"Arthur.""

My father nodded.

"What did you find?""

Michael placed another folder down.

"Something unusual.""

He opened it.

"Denise requested copies of Maya's records shortly after your marriage.""

My father frowned.

"Why?""

"She claimed she was updating family documents.""

I looked at the papers.

"She didn't have permission.""

Michael shook his head.

"No.""

My father leaned forward.

"What exactly did she change?""

Michael hesitated.

"The listed parent information.""

My heart stopped.

"She removed someone.""

"Who?""

Michael looked at me.

"Your biological father.""

Nobody spoke.

Then my father asked:

"Why would she do that?""

Michael placed another document on the table.

"Because after the change, she was able to claim herself as Maya's legal guardian.""

I felt sick.

"She wanted control.""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

Everything finally connected.

The money.

The hospital.

The records.

She wasn't just trying to save money.

She was trying to make me dependent on her.

A child without information.

A child without choices.

A child who had nowhere else to go.

My father closed his eyes.

"I trusted her.""

I reached for his hand.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

The words surprised me.

"You don't have to apologize for everything.""

"Yes, I do.""

He squeezed my hand.

"I brought someone into your life who hurt you.""

That was the first time he said it.

Not "a mistake.""

Not "a misunderstanding.""

Hurt.

That afternoon, Denise called.

My father put the phone on speaker.

Her voice sounded different.

Less confident.

"Arthur.""

"What do you want?""

"I want to talk.""

"No.""

A pause.

"Please.""

Nobody expected that word from her.

My father looked at me.

Then answered.

"Talk.""

Denise breathed out.

"I know how this looks.""

I almost laughed.

How it looks?

But my father stayed silent.

"I made decisions because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

My father replied:

"You lost everything because you tried to control everything.""

Silence.

Then Denise said:

"There is something Maya doesn't know.""

My body stiffened.

My father looked at me.

"What?""

Denise's voice dropped.

"The DNA test wasn't the only reason I changed her records.""

My heart started racing.

"What other reason?""

A long pause.

Then Denise whispered:

"Because Maya's biological father came back.""

I froze.

My father stood.

"What?""

"He contacted me.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

My father's face changed.

"How many years?""

Denise didn't answer.

"How many years, Denise?""

Finally:

"Five.""

I felt dizzy.

Five years.

Someone had known.

Someone had been alive.

Someone had been looking for me.

My father looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

"Where is he now?""

Denise hesitated.

Then she said:

"He has been trying to find Maya.""

The call went silent.

Then she added:

"And he finally did.""

My father gripped the phone.

"Where?""

May you like

Denise whispered:

"He's standing outside your house.""
