Chapter 8: The Truth Isabella Carried

I didn’t know what hurt more.

The possibility that my mother had secrets.

Or the possibility that Isabella Moretti had known them all along.

When we arrived at Vincent’s home, Isabella was sitting near the window.

She looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Like someone who had been carrying a heavy truth for a very long time.

Vincent entered first.

“Mother.””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

And she knew.

“What did you find?””

My voice shook.

“You had something that belonged to my mother.””

Isabella closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

The answer broke something inside me.

“You knew?””

“I knew part of the truth.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice rose.

“I’m tired of parts.””

Isabella looked at me sadly.

“You deserve the whole story.””

I stood there.

Waiting.

“My father was a powerful man,” Vincent said quietly.

Isabella looked at him.

“He was.””

She turned back to me.

“Your mother discovered that he was moving money through fake companies.””

I listened.

“Your mother came to me because she knew she was in danger.””

“Why you?””

Isabella smiled sadly.

“Because I was the only person in that family who still believed right and wrong mattered.””

The words were heavy.

“What happened?””

Isabella looked down.

“Your mother gave me the ledger.””

My breathing stopped.

“Then what?””

“She planned to expose everything.””

“And?””

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“She never got the chance.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Vincent answered.

“Her death wasn’t an accident.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“No.””

Isabella reached for my hand.

“Emma.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“My mother died in a car accident.””

Isabella looked heartbroken.

“That is what everyone was told.””

My hands shook.

“Who did it?””

Nobody answered.

Then Isabella said the name.

“Victoria Langford.””

The room froze.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Victoria?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because your mother discovered the money trail.””

I thought about the woman from the ballroom.

The confidence.

The cruelty.

The way she believed nobody could touch her.

Twenty-five years of secrets.

Twenty-five years of control.

Then Vincent’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

He hung up.

“What happened?””

His face was pale.

“The original ledger.””

My heart raced.

“What about it?””

He looked at me.

“It was found.””

“Where?””

Vincent looked toward the front door.

“Outside.””

The room went silent.

“Who found it?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Victoria Langford.””

My blood went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Vincent shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the security footage on his phone.

“She didn’t find it.””

A pause.

“She planted it.””

And then another message appeared on Vincent’s phone.

A video file.

Sent from Victoria.

He opened it.

Her face appeared on screen.

Smiling.

“Emma Carter,” Victoria said.

“Since you seem determined to uncover the past…”

She held up a small notebook.

The ledger.

“But you should know something.””

Her smile widened.

“Your mother wasn’t my enemy.””

A pause.

“She was my partner.””

The video ended.

And nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the entire story had changed.

And the truth we were chasing…

might have been the biggest lie of all.
